Well, that's probably attributed to it being so short.

NP: A Pillow of Winds
No, I wouldn't say so. I standout track is a standout track, regardless of the length.

Atomic Rain 02-05-2006 04:49 PM
Plus, whatever happened to owning the artwork and lyrics, for the sake of owning them?
It's not really a philosophy i subscribe to. I like music for music, not for being able to look at pretty pictures.

I buy CDs when it's convinient. I don't use any p2p, although i sometimes download from regnyouth.com.
No, I wouldn't say so. I standout track is a standout track, regardless of the length.
I'm not saying that a song's quality has anything to do with it's length, but it is sort of easy to overlook a 1:35 track on an album that's an hour and 21 minutes long.

I see what you are saying

I agree atomic rain

pigonthewing82 02-05-2006 05:39 PM
Yea my favorite form the album.

I also love Vera! nobody else i know likes it...but hey
Vera is cool. My favorite from the Wall is In The Flesh? I think its such a great character introduction "If you wanna know whats behind these cold eyes, You'll just have to plow your way through this disguise."

Though my favorite Pink Floyd song is Comfertably Numb off of DSOT tied with SOYCD off of one of my bootlegs. I think Comfertably Numb is my favorite because it hits me so hard as someone who does drugs. All and all we are all searching to become Comferatably Numb in one way or another but that first solo desrcribes perfectly how i feel Comfertably Numb when I'm high.

Dragon_Prince 02-06-2006 09:13 AM

Hi people, would you please read and rate my DSOTM review, http://www.sputnikmusic.com/album.php?reviewid=5141

Thanks in advance :)

BigTrav415 02-06-2006 03:04 PM

First half of Disc 2 > all. Period. Especially if you're emo or something.

Even with all its awesomeness, The Wall isn't my favorite Floyd album, mostly because it's so dark and depressing. I like happy/funny stuff over all, that's the kind of guy I am. I'd much rathe sit a t home witha bowl of popcorn and a Python flick than just about anyhing else on a Saturday night. I know most Floyd isn't funny per se, but it's more upbeat and has less of a downer feeling than The Wall.

Speaking of which, we had an impromptu discussion of Floyd today in World Cultures. Our teacher is a big Floyd fan, and the girl next to told her that she finally saw the movie Wall, and we kind of had a discussion. I did learn one thing, apparently there is actually a movie More, and it has to do with Pink Floyd, they didn't just do the soundtrack. I always thought it was just the soundtrack, I need to see if I can find it.

MidnightRider 02-06-2006 03:17 PM
First half of Disc 2 > all. Period.
Disc 2 in it's entirety owns, though I'll agree that the first half is better. Some of Floyd's darkest work is on there IMO. I just realized the other day how badass the solo in Hey You is.

BigTrav415 02-06-2006 03:19 PM

And my favorite lyric of all time:

But it was only a fantasy
The wall was too high, as you can see
No matter how he tried, he could not break free
And the worms ate into his brain

In all truthfulness, I think you're right about all of Disc 2 though. Run Like Hell \m/

Lunch 02-06-2006 03:23 PM

Strange, that's my favorite lyric as well. That part always blows me away.

MidnightRider 02-06-2006 03:28 PM

Yeah those lyrics are great, though the whole song is incredible.

Hey You, would you help me to carry the stone...

BigTrav415 02-06-2006 05:09 PM

Actually, I can't believe I've never brought up my theory before in this thread, but this is the perfect time, so here we go.

The first time I ever heard Hey You, before I knew about the "real" theme behind the album, I thought the song was about Jesus Christ. Point:

Hey you, out there in the cold,
Getting lonely, getting old, can you feel me

He is asking if those unsaved souls in need can feel his presence. A little iffy, but still.

Hey you, standing in the aisles
With itchy feet and fading smiles, can you feel me?

A reference to church, and the gradual disillusionment and boredom of church-goers as the focus almost seems to leave Jesus and his proverbs and teachings and get into completely different subjects that have nothing to do with even the Bible sometimes, and he's asking them to remember the true meaning of their faith and not to abandon him because of apathy.

Hey you, don't help them to bury the light,
Don't give in without a fight.

He's asking his followers not to allow a society disillusioned with religion, especially Christianity, to "destroy" the church.

Hey you, out there on your own,
sitting naked by the phone, would you touch me?

It seems like a reference to a suicidal person, on the verge of sanity and about to call a suicide hotline, and he's asking them to touch him, as it is mentioned many tims in the Bible that those who touch Christ are healed.

Hey you, with your ear against the wall
Waiting for someone to call out, would you touch me?

The same idea, a lonely or emotional person just looking for something to grasp onto, and he is asking them to come to him.

Hey you, would you help me to carry the stone?

This can be interpreted three ways, "the stone" meaning the burden of the world's sins that Jesus carried, "the stone" as a metaphor for the cross, which is the same idea as the first way, and the third way, "the stone" literally meaning the stone closing his tomb that was moved after three days and his body was gone. He could be asking a follower and a friend to help him move the stone so that he might rise to Heaven and cleanse the sins of the world.

Open your heart, I'm coming home

One of the most powerful and chilling lines in the whole song. In this context, he is literally asking someone to open their heart and let him come in, so that they can be saved.

But it was only a fantasy,
The wall was too high as you can see,
No matter how he tried he could not break free,
And the worms ate into his brain.

In all honesty, this is the only section of the song that doesn't really apply to this interpretation. You could argue that maybe this was describing a soul too far gone for them to even accept Jesus as his Savior, but it seems out of context with the rest of the song.

Hey you, out there on the road,
Doing what you're told, can you help me?

This line didn't strike me as much until recently, and I had an epiphany and remembered the Good Samaritan story. For those who don't know, Samaritans were a people in the Bible, and were renowned for their coldness and lack of sympathy. In the story, a man is robbed and beaten by thiefs and left by the side of the road to die, until a "good Samaritan" found him and helped him.

Hey you, out there beyond the wall,
Breaking bottles in the hall, can you help me?

He is calling out to the apathetic, semi-outcast from society, just on the fringes and doing what he wants, telling him that he as welcome and needed as anyone.

Hey you, don't tell me there's no hope at all!
Together we stand, divided we fall.

Another powerful line. After deliberation, I think of the Disciples of Christ after his death, telling each other to keep hope up and to continue teaching the gospel of Christ, even against persecution.

Remember, this is just an idea that's been cooking in my head for a while. It's probably not what Waters intended when he wrote it, so don't think anything of it if you don't want to.

MidnightRider 02-06-2006 09:28 PM

Thats pretty cool man, I never thought about it that way. Like you said, I really doubt Rogers meant for it to come off that way, but still. It's amazing how songs intended to mean one thing can be interpreted completely different by different people.

San Tropez is a really cool song, I've always sort of overlooked it before.

Riva 02-07-2006 02:08 AM

Yes! Someone started analysing lyrics again!

Shall we start dibsing songs from the Wall then? If so, I've got The Trial and Goodbye Blue Sky. :D

That's probably why the tape of More is called More: The Soundtrack to the Motion Picture.

Apparently it is very arthouse.

And for any who are interested, La Vallee is the movie for which OBC was the soundtrack.

magicbus 02-07-2006 06:16 AM

I've been trying to find both of those movies, but it's been to no avail.

Atomic Rain 02-07-2006 11:46 AM

I'd like to see La Valee.

Amusingly, the film was subtitled "Obscured by Clouds", onmce it became clear that pink floyd would not use the name "La Valee" for the album.

BigTrav415 02-07-2006 02:51 PM

I don't really feel like analysing another Wall song right now. I think I'll do Sheep since no one has done it in all that time. I'll start it now, maybe post it later today.

Ugh. I left my iPod at home for the first time in a long time, and I had such a Floyd craving all day... music is like crack.

magicbus 02-07-2006 04:46 PM

I've been analysing some Stones and Beatles songs for my brother, but no Floyd. Although we almost did Echoes.

(This was all for a school project)

MidnightRider 02-07-2006 07:05 PM
Although we almost did Echoes.
Good idea! I'll get on that sometime in the next couple of days. It has some of my favorite Floyd lyrics.

pigonthewing82 02-07-2006 07:10 PM

If its not already taken could I do Comfertably Numb?

guitarded_chuck 02-08-2006 09:15 AM

Ok here's the deal with Echoes, I almost have all of it learned. I need to figure out the awesome part at 18:15, but I've even learned how to do that crazy slide stuff at the beginning of the Pompeii version.

From that quote, it sounds like Gilmour is pretty sick of and pissed off at the constant reunion rumors. It sounds like he's just trying to shoot down the rumors once and for all. I never really got my hopes up for a reunion, so I'm not all that disappointed, but it would incredible if they reunited.

I really think there is no way they well tour. After Live 8 they were offered a payment in the millions I think EACH, not counting concert sales. None of the members even had to think about it they just said no. Water's said that if there was another charity benifit concert like Live 8 he would love to get back together with the rest of the guys and play all of Dark Side of the Moon. I have my fingers crossed for that.

I guess since there were no objections I could do Comfertably Numb, I'll try to get it up latter tonight.

BigTrav415 02-08-2006 05:20 PM

I'm thinking that on April 1st he'll be like "Haha, you got punk'd!" and they go on a free world tour lasting forever. :)

HeavyRiva, let it be known that you are the coolest mod ever.

Riva 02-08-2006 05:33 PM

Well, Dave was denying rumours of a reuinon just before Live8, so we'll see if maybe another big charity event (in Australia) gets them back together to play (in Australia)

Hahaha, why?

pigonthewing82 02-08-2006 07:15 PM

In this song I belive has two people speaking at once. One of them is a docter called to help the main character Pink who "Isn't feeling well and hes back at the hotel" The other is more my interpitation and I see it as the drug Heroin talking. I see symbolism in the music as well as the song, but its more of a personal interpitation so here it is:

First guitar solo: This is the essense of peace. I always thought of this as the feeling of him shooting up, the feeling you get when when high on anything. This is musical symbolism of that peaceful feeling we all hope to acheive one way or another

Second guitar solo: Unlike the first one this is wild, furios, and almost cahotic. I think the two solo's are oppisets to show the two different sides of doing drugs, as well as just living through life. The good times, the bad, the laughs, the cries. This is that peace we all want to acheive, that peace shown so well in that first solo, gone to hell. This is our lives in complete dissaray and dissorder.

The lyrics:

Hello?
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?

Introduction to the song. This is the docter or the drug addressing Pink. These vocals seem to be more of a soft seductive nature reflecting that of the drug. This is also to show that Pink is out of it and has lost touch with the world. People wonder if he is even aware of those, or events, around him.

Come on, now,
I hear you're feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again.

This is the docter telling Pink that he can help him with his ailments. This is also the drug telling Pink that it is the escape to all that ails him. It will help him get through day and not make life so harsh.

Relax.
I'll need some information first.
Just the basic facts.
Can you show me where it hurts?

This is classic steryotipical docter lines (now I know why all my life when I said I was sick my dad always responded with "can you show me where it hurts"). The docter is trying to find out what is wrong with Pink. This is also the drug acting almost as a friend you can go to for consolation. Someone who you can bring all your problems to and they will make them go away.

There is no pain you are receding

This is Pink starting to talk to everyone listening to the song. This is more about the drugs then the docter. This shows the drug taking the pain away from Pink.

A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.

This is a metaphore for something beautiful that we would all love to touch, but never will fully be able to grasp. It is the epitome of peace. It is a peace that we are all after and so many try to get through drugs.

You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.

This conferms eariler lines that Pink has lost touch with all those around him. Weather he is doing this deliberatly because the world has become so hard he has shut it out, or over use of drugs has left him out of touch with reality (a Syd reference?).

When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I've got that feeling once again

This again goes back to that peace we all try to achieve through different means person to person. The reference to being sick is the feeling of being "numb" that those with a high feaver sometimes feel. These lines are to show Pink finding "comferte" in this "numb" feeling.

I can't explain you would not understand
This is not how I am.

This line seems to be to those who have never tried drugs. For any drug it truly is a sensation you could never explain to someone who has never tried it. Though those who don't do the drugs judge those who do with out understading. They judge someone who is under the influence of the drugs and it is not how they usually are.

I have become comfortably numb.

This is the best simple phrase describing being on drugs. To become comfortably numb to the world, all your problems, all those around you who help build your own personal wall. This is our way of not taking down our wall, but just looking out the window of it and getting a simple glipse of an easier more free life.

O.K.
Just a little pinprick.
There'll be no more aaaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick.

This is where the docter comes back. He more or less dominates the next few lines. This is him injecting Pink with that drug. I always almost thought that these lines showed Pink was somewhat afraid of needles.

Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good.
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.

Asking "can you stand up" is in reference to the begining when he says "get you on your feet again" at the begining. I think that the "that will keep you going through the show" line is symbolism for needing the drug to get through life, and to appeal to rockers who literally need drugs to get through a show. This is also in refernce to a show where Roger needed to be injected with something (he never specified what during the commentary on the Wall movie) The docter did very much what is described in this song and injected him when he was so out of it he didn't realize what was going on. He was injected and moved out to the show to complete it. These lines show drugs more negitive evil side rather than the peaceful side.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.

Chorus, see above.

When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.

Pink talking to us again. A time when we were all natuarlly comfertably numb is when we were children. We didn't realize the evils of the world and were oblivious to them. This is yet another feeling those on drugs are trying to recapture.

I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown,
The dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

These last few lines are in refernce to, again, us trying to acheive that peace we all want, but having it slip through our fingers. These lines seem to be saying we could get that peace when we were children but as we grow up, and our wall gets higher, we are unable to go back to it with out help. His dream of getting to that peace has vanished and now he spends his life trying to become comfertably numb.

There is Comfertably Numb. Enjoy!

Riva 02-08-2006 07:23 PM

Good thoughts. I always thought of it as Pink and the Doctor, with the Doctor talking to Pink's unconcious mind, and Pink's subconcious responding.

Thanks, yeah I tend to usually ignore the basic meaning to songs and try to develop more personal meanings to them. The whole concept of becoming comfertably numb and that peace Pink was trying to find that I talked about in my write up is somthing I am looking for as well. This has become my favortie Pink Floyd song because I identify with this meaning to the song so much. If it were the other one I would still love the song, but it wouldn't be my favorite.

Nice, pigonthewing.
I never really got my hopes up for a reunion, so I'm not all that disappointed, but it would incredible if they reunited.
A reunion tour would be amazing, but at the same time, they've ended the Floyd years on a relatively positive note with the Live8 concert. I would rather have them be remembered for that than for having a huge fight on a reunion tour.

BigTrav415 02-08-2006 09:58 PM

I'm glad this thread has some stuff with a point again

I've decided to do Echoes now. If someone else posts it first, go ahead I guess, but I've already got an idea of what I'm gonna do, so I'll post mine too.

I was listening to Embryo off the BBC Recording '70-'71, and Gilmours breaks out the inverted wah  I want one so badly.

Sea gulls are pretty big. And they're also quite nasty and brave. This one sea gull snatched a pasty outta one a of my friends hands. I wouldnt capture sea gulls without planning it out carefully and getting medical insurance first.

Sir Riva, you slay me.

Seriously though, I'm talking about the inverted wah that makes those whale/seagull/whatever screeching noises. You all know what I'm talking about.
