guys, i need help, i am converting someone into an opeth fan, they really like patterns in the ivy 2, hope leaves, and most of their softer stuff. but i need to introduce them to the heavier side, and i was thinking drapery falls maybe? i need a song that is a good introductory song for their heavy side
The Drapery Falls is only heavy for a couple minutes. Most of it is soft.I'd say The Leper Affinity, Deliverance, When, Demon of the Fall, April Ethereal. If I had to pick out of those, go with The Leper Affinity. |

No growling in it though... Possibly Dirge for November then. |

Deliverance(IMO) contained the heaviest stuff they've done. Edit: I misread...you want an intro to the heaviness. I'd second The Drapery Falls and The Leper Affinity, and also add: White Cluster Karma Demon of the Fall Nectar Godhead's Lament Blackwater Park Moonlapse Vertigo |
I'd say the Moor. It's nice and progressive, the intro is ridiculously cool, and it's balanced enough to not completely destroy the poor listener. I played that for someone who hadn't liked Opeth at first, and he liked it alot. Maybe Drapery Falls and then that?

The Moor... that's the first Opeth song I ever heard off the first album I ever heard. Needless to say I like it alot. |
yeah, might go the moor, if it's any help, the person normally listens to indie sort of stuff. and when i said i was introducing the person to Opeth's heavier side, i actually did mean introduce, i'm not going to make them listen to wreath or demon of the fall straight away, that would put them off instantly.........the moor seems a good choice
|
"when" got me into Opeth instantly.
|
The Moor for sure, it is the best for this person in so many ways
|
maybe masters apprentices?? I know its really heavy but its got a realy beautiful soft part in the middle.
|
hmm, maybe, but i think i need a song that has the heavier part in the middle, and a softer/lighter start, that's why i thought of drapery falls, the moor is a good choice, so is dirge for november
|
first heavy opeth song i heard was deliverance
|
what would be your favourite Opeth instrumental? Mine would be Madrigal, its beautiful and fits straight into the next track on the album, April Ethereal
|
Ending Credits is the first thing that springs to mind....I love that smooth guitar line.
Been rather quiete on the Opeth front lately....what ARE those guys up to? Supposed to be working on a new album and securing a new label, but it bothers me that we pretty much haven't heard a peep since Dimebag died (RIP). |
maybe they are grieving....................
|

actually, the amen corner is the next song on the album. april ethereal is after prologue. my favourite instrumental(s) would have to be, epilogue and silhoutte |
oh **** im wrong, thats what i meant, im way over my head. Epilogue is fantastic, great harmonies.

yeah, it's also a really fun song to play:) |
I always thought For Absent Friends was their best acoustic instumental?
Do you guys think its under-rated? its simple yet (as Opeth does) conveys so much emotion. I guess it must have been the synth stuff they used on Deliverance. opinions? |
I like Credence. It almost sounds like a jam, but really well organised. Plus i can play it \m/ (its not hard xD). Its not really an instrumental, but meh.
|
I also like credence. and yes it is fairly easy to play.
But dont be mislead. Try playing some acoustic breakdowns on BwP, It does tend to be a bit more difficult to play. Not impossible , just harder. Im not even gonna talk about Still Life. It just mindblowingly difficult some of it ......................well for me! ;) |
From Still Life I can play Benighted and I'm up to the solo in Godheads Lament, which is about 3 minutes in.
And I can play Hope Leaves as well, haven't really tried anything else. |
i only listen to the songs the guy really sings in. I just don't like any music with growling, screaming, etc. i think it kinda ruins the sound, but i guess some people like that. He has a great singing voice though, and the instruments are great.
|
matter of opinion
|
does anyone else have heaps of trouble with opeth solos? I dunno why, but whenever I get up to any solo I just have such a hard time learning it, its such a bitch.

Also everything off Orchid except for Silhouette cos NOBODY HAS THE MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
learn yourself, if your pitch is good enough, you should be able to
|
I've seen Opeth twice in Australia, and once I got to meet them!If their roadie is trustworth enough, they might even have a copy of my demo... I gave it to him to pass it on to them.

that happens to me except I never "really" practice the solos enough. I just go off and do what I can. Like the drapery falls solo, it sounds really easy, but the barring or whatever you do in the solo is tough for me. Also The funeral portait has a slow sweeping type solo that is kinda challenging because it's hard for me to play all the notes smoothly and cleanly. |
yeah, well, i'm not a great guitarist, only been learning for about 1 and a half years, and it's half and half for me, Opeth songs i can fully play are
The moor April ethereal Demon of the fall patterns in the ivy 1/2 windowpane Leper affinity under the weeping moon Blackwater park and most of moonlapse vertigo |
Opeth Oasis, you have extremely good taste for someone who is only in grade 6. Consider yourself repp'd. And the only song by Opeth I can play is To Bid You Farewell, it's all I've tried so far.
|
I'm in Melbourne, pretty far away from Sydney. Unfortunatelly I missed Opeth, I got into them after their last tour, so yeah I haven't been a fan for that long. Although I do have every CD, the DVD, and a shirt. On the topic of the shirt, on the back it says "2004, In the year of our Lord", what exactly does that mean? People think I worship satan or something when I wear it.
|
I have no Musical level or anything but Ive been playing for about 3 years now and ive managed to play most of their songs except some songs on Morningrise (cause I consider it to be less guiness).
Oh but the other day at my music school, they had all the little children there to play a concert for their parents to show how far they have progressed in the year. I had to play and i chose Ending Credits. My teacher played the Rhythm and i played lead. most people played like christmas songs (one guy even played final countdown on the keyboard!lol) but our song was the best performed song of the evening. It was great, Opeth to the masses! |
can anyone here play the drapery falls solo?
|
Which one?
|
Which one?
there's only one solo man, it's right after the "Aaaaaahhhhhhh Aaahhhhh" part. |
can anyone here play the drapery falls solo?
Yeah I can. :D |
Ah...Opeth. My favorite band. I've actually never tried playing any of their stuff though I will say they are one of the most beautiful progressive metal bands I've ever heard.
