Korn - Let's Do This Now
I was a massive Korn fan, and this track comes off of the only album I have yet to hear. Starts off with a bagpipe intro, the drums come in about about 10-15 seconds and keepi going for a bit. The song gradually gets louder, until the guitars and bass enter. It's the usual down-turned riffage from Korn(Not saying it as a bad thing, just stating it). And the bass...one thing I really hate about Korn. Fieldy just keeps slap-slap-slap-slapping, and it's aggrivating. Regardless of that, I'm enjoying the song so far. Jon's vocals come in, doing some clean vocals for a while, nothing new. After a little bit of this we hit the chorus, and Jon switches to his low-pitched screaming(Note:screaming, not growling, and definitely not death metal in any way). As always, the bass keeps on slapping throughout. One guitar plays the riff from the beginning whilst another handles the melody. This is followed by another verse and chorus, and then a breakdown. Wait, what's this? Fieldy stopped slapping his bass! Anyways, Jon sings some calm, clean vocals for a while, before letting out a huge yell of "NOWWWWWWWWWWWW". For a few seconds after it's just the drums and guitar for a bit, before the band plays the chorus once more to end the song. Like I said, I've always been a Korn fan, and I'd have to say this is an improvement over Untouchables by a longshot. Not on par with their older work, but good nonetheless. 7/10 Appalling Spawn - Manthra of Hope(Technical death/grind) Leviathan - Sardoniscorn(Raw black metal) Wormed - Tunnel of Ions(Brutal death metal) Dresden Dolls - Coin-Operated Boy(Cabaret) Steel - Heavy Metal Machine(Old school power metal, Opeth members and Dan Swano) Limbonic Art - Through the Gleams of Death)Symphonic black metal) BlkMetalDeviant on AIM if you need these. |
That Wormed is available on their site, www.wormed.net, if anyone is interested.
EDIT: Never mind, I did one. Appalling Spawn - Manthra of Hope This pre-Lykathea band has all the members of Lykathea except the absolutely insane drummer, Thomas Corn, needless to say I had high hopes for it as Lykathea are my favorite band. It starts off with an extremely brutal, angry roar courtesy of Ptoe, then it's straight into trademark brutal-but-kind-of-melodic Lykathea riffs. Also sounding reminiscent of Anata at this point. The drumming definitely does not dissapoint, although it can't compare to Corn's. Ptoe's vocals excel. Riffing is supreme. There is even what seems to be ambience going on amongst the brutality of some of the riffs at around 2:00 and 2:30. This really reminds me of Lykathea, minus some of the ambient interludes. Thanks alot for making me check them out, I am getting the rest of the album as I type, from you :p 10/10 My suggestions: Sauron - Demonic Invasion (Unholy Thrash Metal) Can be found here: http://www.kitchel.net/mp3/03%20Demonic%20Invasion.mp3 |

Hot damn, this is what I call thrash. Starts out with great double bass and a sweet riff. New riff, but it's just as good as the previous. Vocals kick in. I like how it's a cross of growling and clean, kinda gruff. So far, it's really reminding me of Dark Angel, and that is of course awesome. Nice new heavy riff for the chorus, vocals are still great. Another verse and chorus, and in comes a solo. Great shit here, no wankery or Kerry King bulls here. The intro riff comes back, and then the chrous riff after. At the end is just fucking around, with double bass and guitars. I can't believe I haven't heard of these guys. This is great textbook West Coast thrash, very similar to Dark Angel, almost proto-death sounding. Heavy as hell. 10/10 Recommendations: Overkill - E.vil N.ever D.ies Death - Open Casket Wormed - Voxel Mitosis Repulsion - Maggots in Your Coffin Iron Maiden - Wasted Years |

Overkill - Evil Never Dies
Wow!!! Amazing Thrash metal right here  0:00 - 1:10... The song starts off with a slow neat guitar effect (I think) which slowly builds up and gets more intense as it goes on 1:11 - 1:25... The guitar effect turns to distortion, as the drums and bass join in, in basically a new intro to the song 1:26 - 1:57... This is where the amazing thrash comes into play. A wicked headbanging beat with heavy bass and precise triplets on the bassdrum. 1:58 - 2:51... A neat little 3 second acuostic segement that leads into a guitar solo with the thash beat in tha bass and drums still going. That lasts about 20 seconds and then it goes right back into the basic thrash verse, and through the guitar solo again. 2:52 - 3:50... The tempo slows down and the music gets less intense 3:51 - 4:23... The tempo slowly builds and builds, and before getting back to the verse you hear a loud "EVIL NEVER DIES" from the vocals and backing vocals (a great lead into the verse) 4:24 - 5:49 (end)... the song goes back into the verse with the guitar solo and all a couple more times, and the solos get more amazing in this part. The song ends off with another "EVIL NEVER DIES", which carries on for a few more seconds Overall, this is an amazing killer thrash song by a great band :thumb: My favorite parts were the loud bashing bass, intense guitar solos, and the "EVIL NEVER DIES" screams. GREAT SONG!!! 9.5/10 Recommendations Carcass - Incarnated Solvent Abuse Corossion of Conformity - Break the Circle Dew Scented - Acts of Rage Kataklysm - Chronicles of the Da*ned Primal Fear - Armageddon |

Carcass - Incarnated Solvent Abuse
Begins with a cool sample of someone talking. Sounds like a Halo II bit. Then a great guitar and drum come in. The guitar is very cool but then get's better when the sectiosn change. And then... a 3rd riff. Also very cool. The vocals come in and are prety standard death vocals. They are the high pitched kind, not the gutteral growl. The riffs seem more repeated now and are less cool. There is a cool slower section which goes into a fast section but it's not technical enough to feel really blazing. Oh... there it is. The drums are great. I've heard Carcass but hadn't noticed the druming this much before. The guitar solo starts off kind of weak but picks up steam. It's a bit short. This is a pretty basic song structure but fortunately the repeated parts are good. The lows on the guitars are a little thin I notice. A second guitar solo. This one is much cooler. A bit more experimental than the first, not staying within the key entirely which I like. I like the riff after the solo too. This is definitely more about the guitars than vocals which is good for death metal, usually. The time changes sometimes feel a bit awkward but are handles well. The ending leaves something to be desired. A good song but it has it's flaws. I think I'll look into this Carcass album. I've only heart Heartwork and Swansong. 8/10 Carnival in Coal - Yes! We Have No Bananas (weird experimental prog metal - Very cool) Agalloch - ...And The Great Cold Death Of The Earth (Folky prog metal - again very cool) Alchemist - Chinese Whispers (more prog metal) I've got it all on soulseek or IM me and ask. slsk - Fast Fingers, IM - Viking Vs Pirate |

Never heard, or heard of, these guys before.
Carnival in Coal - Yes! We Have No Bananas - 5:32 Starts off with some stabs of sound, with raspy vocals on each one, saying something I can't make out (presumably "we have no bananas today" or something). This is followed by a keyboardy melody for a little bit, before blasting fully into metal, with those rasping vocals (which aren't awful, but aren't great either) saying things I can't decipher, and female operatic vocals, quietly, in the background. I don't like the drums all that much either, they sound like they've been programmed without much finesse (and if they're not actually programmed, then they just sound weird). A quieter section comes in, but the guitars are still crunchy and heavy. There's a clean voice now, singing (kind of), sounding scared, about having no bananas. I actually quite like this bit, and it's followed by another quiet, guitarless bit, which seems a bit pointless but isn't unpleasant. Raspy comes back in later. I think there may well be sound effects in the background, but I can't make them out well enough to talk about. He definitely said something about not having bananas there. His vocals are actually quite a bit better than I first thought. This is okay so far. Very strange, but nothing amazing, yet. Nothing terrible either though. Some funky stuff going on without any kind of backing, around 2:30. Clean voice guy comes back in, talking about bananas again, but throwing apples in too. The drums come back in too, but they're not the unimpressive pounding of before. Occasional stabs of harsh guitar, and background vocals saying "no no no no" mean I quite like this bit. The lyrics, when I can make them out, are cool. The song fades out on repetitions of this, which is a bit of a weak way to end. It sounds like it should have some more definite ending. Still, that was pretty good, especially from 2:30-when the repetition started. Lose some of the background sound effects (some were okay) and I'd be looking for an album, I think. They're French though, so they won't listen. 7.5/10 Songs; Canvas Solaris - When Solar Winds Collide (technical instrumental metal) Bob Dylan - Oxford Town (folk - underrated Dylan, I think) earthtone 9 - Tat Twam Asi (metal, of a kind) Devin Townsend - Earth Day (experimental metal, 9 minutes long) Del Tha Funkee Homosapien & Dinosaur Jr - The Missing Link (guitary hip hop) The Meads of Asphodel - A Healer Made God (metal - black in ethos, an amalgamation in style) - could well be mislabelled, as the CD case mislabels this track as Sons of Anak Rise, and vice versa. This one should start off with a sample saying "It is written that man shall not live by bread alone.." |

Bob Dylan - Oxford Town 1:47
Begins with an acoustic guitar part. Pretty folksy. I've never been a fan of Dylan but I also haven't heard many songs. The guitar part makes me think of the soundtrack to a boxcar trainride. The vocals aren't as bad as I thou- oh yes they are. He started off being comprehensible and unannoying but then he started sounding stupid like he has a thick tongue. I like the lyrics...sort of. Very simple but nice and they carry some meaning. I also like the volume swell in guitar when the vocals go out. I really do hate this voice. I think I hear a second instrument in there. A mandolin maybe? pretty cool. It's a good thing this song is so short because it is really repetitive. I liked the song better than other Dylan but I'm not swayed to download any more. 6/10 Abigor - I Face The Eternal Winter Agalloch - ...And The Great Cold Death Of The Earth Alchemist - Chinese Whispers Rain Paint - Freeze Day All available through soulseek - Fast Fingers, or AIM - Viking Vs Pirate |

Canvas Solaris - When Solar Winds Collide
this is what a google turned up on them: CANVAS SOLARIS could be classified as “thinking man’'s metal.” Their debut, Spatial/Design, is perplexing technical metal bursting with way too many musical acrobatics to even bother with vocals. The four spacey and ultra complex tracks have a running time of over 25 minutes and cover the gamut of metal'’s many facets. This young trio have learned their lessons well. Their masters are Spiral Architect, Watchtower, Cynic and King Crimson. Their peers are few. Canvas Solaris stands alone. The song starts off with Clean guitar w/ dealy playing 'epic' chords I guess. This is faintly accompanied by a synth to give a very moving intro. This continues untill about 30 secs when the whole band kicks in and the clean guitar switches to distortion. At this point in time think along the lines of sprial architecht riffage, very technical but with the bass providing much more of a steady groove. Actually this riff has elements of Power metal \m/ to it. This section has a kind of disjointed drum part untill about 50 secs where it settles down for a bit give the song a bit of drive before the disjointed rhythm kicks in again. 1:05 and enter a solo descending chord progression before the rest of the band kick back in for a frenzied harmony section with extremly good playing all round. Defintely showcasing instrumental prog at it's finest. The drumming here is slightly Portnoy-esque as it barely sticks to a regular beat. at 2 mins we have an arpegiated riff which appears to be a chours so to speak as we visit by means of more riffing before entering another clean section. This has the feel of a breakdwon section to it with the Tom Rhythm from the drums, it also sounds familiar(Satiani I think) in places. This Clean section then develops into a very emotional all, which at times actually brings to mind some Uematsu work. We then switch back into distortion and re-visit riffage similar to that of the start of the song but this time with a phenomenal guitar solo over the top. This playing is flawless and certainly brings to mind Petrucci in places but in a more easy going way I feel. This solo brings us to the close of the song. I'd say 9/10 this piece was great. My only real vice is with the tones of the guitarist but I can put up with that. This song brings to mind DT but ina less iffy and more easy going way. Definatly great I would reccomend it to any fan of Instrumental Prog. Second review w/ reccomendations coming in a min. |
Alchemist - Chinese Whispers
Here's what a google search turned up on them: Alchemist - Official site. Australian psychedelic metal band. I think I'm going to like this band :) Intro starts off with clean Bass, followed by high hat and with a slight slide w/ dealy we muscle our way into the main idea of the song. And it's heavy. Full band with distortion and good storng vocals. A relaxed tempo with double bass drum provides pace and rhythme for this song, whilst the guitar, though their sounds are muddy, have a kinda middle eastern feel to them. This section of the song continues untill 1:30 when in breaks a supremely heavy riff topped by screamy vocals. We then switch back to the original calmer section with the middle eastern feel, this feel is complemented by little overdubs. We then switch back to extremely heavy section again before this is joined by a little lead guitar fill. At about 3:00 mins ,in keeping with the middle eastern feel, both guitars play seperate melodies, one on clean and one on distortion bothe coming in from seperate channels. After this we progress to a new section and the gutars stay with seperate sounds on different channels and the riffage is supremely good, and the song really gains pace here. The vocals bring to mind Phil Anselmo. After this we change to another section which is a breakdown section and sticks with the middle eastern feel before being joined by fast double kick. The song then changes to bot the guitars on clean playing in a strange harmony with the whole middle eastern feel continuing. The strange harmony disperses and we're left with a relaxing melody. This is accompanied by overdubs from some a synth. At 7:30 a riff of truely epic proprtions and the synth contiues with the over dubs and then prgoresses into a solo whilst the rhythm changes to fit it in a Dream Theater styel before changing back to the epic riff again. Again we have another change with a change in the feel of the song as we descend back intot the heavy riffage again and the vocals re-enter. We switch back to the extremely havey riff w/ the screamed vocals to finish. About a 7/10 I would say. This song had some really great sections, the production was a bit annoying but certianly bearable. My Reccomendations: Nine Inch Nails - No, You Don't(Heavyish Industrial stuff) The Wildhearts - My baby is a headfuck(rock) Mercyful fate - My Demon (Metal) Dream Evil - Children of the night(power metal) You can get them from me on AIM at somepoint, jsut not right now |

Dream Evil - Children of the Night 0:00 Starts off with typical power metal riffing and solo. 0:30 ARG! I can not stand these clean vocals! Something about them just pisses me off beyond all reason. Background riffing is typical power/classic metal. 1:11 Catchy chorus, and vocals go into falsetto, which I don't mind (Dragonforce got me used to falsetto vox) 1:24 More clean vocals. arg. And that pre-chorus section. 2:05 Chorus! CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT, SEARCHING FOR THE LIGHT, FAR AWAY! 2:20 Then it's a different section with more falsetto 2:30 Decent melodic power metal solo. 3:00 Chorus again 3:15 another different section with more falsetto. Then another solo. 4:00 It all builds up to a cool vocal/lead guitar section. Typical power metal really, just fun to listen too. It fades out too fast though! More of this, less of the crap clean vocals! overall 6/10 My suggestions: Vital Remains - Savior to None (Failure for All) Krisiun - March of the Black Hordes epic brutal death metal on both accounts. |
Edit: Undibs, can't get that Krisiun song.

Krisiun - March of the Black Hordes
I'm a fan of Krisiun but haven't heard this particular song so I decided to give it a go. It starts off with a calm intro, the sound of the wind blowing for a little over a minute. Then the music comes in, with some heavy tremolo picking and lots of double bass. This continues on for close to two minutes, with the riffs changing from low to high and back again, but keeping the same pattern. Next part the drums get somewhat more intense and the guitar work picks up a little bit. After maybe 30 seconds or so of this, it goes back to the main riff and double-bass drums until it fades out in the end. 6/10 The fact that it was instrumental caught me off guard, but didn't really diminish that much for me. My main complaint is that there were only two or three main riffs used the entire song, and it got repetitive quickly. Also the lack of a solo, when I know for a fact these guys can shred. Nonetheless, I know for a fact that these guys can do better(and have in the past), so I would definitely listen to more Krisiun. Mutiilation - Bitterness Bloodred(Raw black metal) Deeds of Flesh - Indigienous to the Appalling(Brutal technical death metal) Impaled Nazarene - Hate(black metal) Leviathan - Sardoniscorn(raw black metal) Limbonic Art - Through the Gleams of Death(symphonic black metal) |
