What I've heard from Helloween (especially their early stuff) it's indeed pretty good and they have been very influencial for the genre. This doesnt mean that there is no other great power metal out there *coughs* Blind Guardian *coughs*
/fanboy :p |
Angr's drummer is so tight live its unreal. Its just insane.

/fanboy :p
Helloween only released one worthy album IMO. "Dark Ride". Blind Guardian, hasn't released a weak record yet :) |
"yet", I'm so anxious about their next step. Dont you like any of the first three (helloween)?

The only album I really cared for out of the first 3 was "Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part I"... ..."Part II" didn't appeal to me, and for their first release (forget the name), I still haven't heard the whole album, only a selective few tracks....and I didn't care for them much. Maybe they were just poorly picked tracks. |
I haven't been here in quite some time, so apologies if I've missed chat about the following questions.
Anyone hear anything about Gamma Ray's Majestic beside what's on their website? Can't wait. It's been so long since we've had new material from them. Anyone know where I can pickup Lust for Live the DVD in NTSC (region0) for less than the import price of like $55? Heading for the East was cheap, like $15 but Lust for Live is always so expensive. Anyone get Nostradameus' Hellbound? It's CRAZY. I have a few samples on my website: Clicky here for free songs. Anyone check out Reviver? I got my name in the Special Thanks in the liner notes of their debut album AND an autographed copy for being a big fan. :thumb: Incredible stuff. |
I'm minutes away from listening to the new Demons & Wizards album. I gotta say, I haven't been this excited to listen to a new album in a long time. I'll post remarks after my, hopefully incredible, listening experience.
I dislike it immensely. I think it's a step down from their first release. The compositions are less D&W and more like "Hansi does Iced Earth". The drumming is more in your face in this release, which to me as a drummer is fun to listen to, but it kinda pulls my attention away from the rest of the music. Hansi's voice is decent as always, but it's just doesn't strike me the way the initial release did. I don't know. The cover of Immigrant Song isn't worth the disk space either. Overall, I prefer the first disc. |

I remember you from somewhere...Arent you the guy who was saying that you cannot fully appreciate Nightfall in Middle Earth unless you've read the book? Well you've made me read it and I totally agree with you. I was looking for you some months ago to explain me a few things on the concept but couldnt find you. Which Stratovarius album would you guys recommend for someone whose favorite songs are
Eagleheart Speed of Light Phoenix Stratosphere |
You happend to pick songs pretty much all from different albums. Try out Elements Pt. 1 or Infinite.

Mkay, thanks! I've been wanting to get an album, but never knew which one to start with. All the Stratovarius songs I have are the ones people have uploaded me on this board, so. |
I uploaded Black Diamond at one point in the YSI thread idk if it'd still be up for download, it was a few days ago.
|
I'm just getting into power metal. I've started with Iced Earth, which I realize isn't exactly power metal, but it's opened the door to more stuff like it. I also have Blind Guardian's Nightfall in Middle Earth which is amazing. Can anyone recommend me or upload some Galloglass? I've never heard them and the whole violin idea intrigues me. Thanks.

Try out Stratovarius for some really melodic powermetal. Dragonforce is good too if you like extremely cheesy stuff. |
Dragonforce is good too if you like extremely cheesy stuff.
 They are so cheesy it's funny. I listen to them when I need a laugh. I have this one song on a GuitarOne cd. |
I don't perticularly like them even with cheesiness aside. They are so boring compared to Stratovarius.
|

Will do, thanks. Cheesiness is ok, I can ignore it for the guitar work. |

That is the first thing that I thought when I heard them. By all means, though, don't let that stop you. :p |
Well done, lucky man :thumb:. I have never heard of these bands before, thanks a lot for recommending them.

Thankfully, a newbie suggested me a pretty helpful site. POST MORE!
I think it might have been me who said that. If not, I believe it :) It certainly does make the lyricsheet a little more personal, understanding lines like "And blood tears I cry. Endless grief remained inside. Cut off your old friends hand". It's a long and drawn out tale, but it's fun nonetheless. Nostradameus' Prophet of Evil was an amazing disc to me. It's good v evil, star wars like almost, no hidden messages, just straight power metal in all its glory. As they evolved, the music changed in a way that I never expected. The Third Prophecy extended its sound into more dark areas, speaking of tales of fallen empires. But Hellbound is even moreso different. I would never link Prophet of Evil and Hellbound to the same band other than Freddy's voice. It's good stuff but SO different from The Words of Nostradameus and Prophet of Evil. Reviver's gotten some good reviews on their premier disc. Patrick's voice is superb, sounding different depending on the track style. He's my favorite vocalist. They took the demos and sped them up, made them a little less perfect, creating a disc that's sounds much more live than studio. Speaking of fallen empires as well, REVIVER tells the tales of Atlantis, and Quetzacoatal and such. It's fast, it's heavy, it's heavy metal intertwined with elements of power and classic styles of modern rock. It's fun, really. Plus, as I said, I'm in the liner notes :thumb: ACircuitShock, you may download some Galloglass from my site as well. Just for you, I've put up a few tracks for you to sample. Good stuff. Apparently, their new disc is being released in August. Download them here. Please don't share the link outside this thread. And Wizard's Magic Circle has been released! I should be getting it in the mail today or monday! Woo!! |
I downloaded the Nostradameus songs from your site. They're like you said straight power metal in all its glory. They sound like a combination of "Tales from the Twilight World" and "Somewhere Far Beyond". In fact the chorus of "Never Turning Back" reminded me of "Welcome to Dying". The more I listen to them the more I sense a huge Blind Guardian influence (without the folk elements). Not very original but they sound aggressive and very tight.
|
Blind Guardian was the first band I discovered when I went looking for a new line of metal. It was decent stuff, but ultimately, Nightfall was the last 'good' disc that I believe they produced. A night at the opera was just not for me. Or Thomen, their drummer, it seems.
You should check out his new stuff, Savage Circus, at his website. It features the singer of Persuader, who has been mistaken for Hansi by some people. It's fast, furious, and what Blind Guardian would have sounded like fi they left out the bard influences and layering of Hansi choirs. |
does anyone know any good prog-power bands that sound like angra, blind guardian and symphony x?
|
Instead of "Nightfall was the last 'good' disc that I believe they produced", you could say "ANATO is the only average album the produced". You sound like rejecting them and/or not believing in them just because of a single bad release.
BG = Hansi + Andre The BG albums differ from one another. Just because they have released a more operatic album, it doesnt mean that this is the direction they will follow from now on. Besides Hansi stated that their next album wont have so many choirs |
BG proved they can write complex operatic symphonies using the metal genre. I will give them that. But Thomen has left them, and many fans, such as myself, have seen the dent that the change like A Night at the Opera can put in a fanbase. Core fans will always be core fans. And BG still have and always will have a following. Nightfall blended the best of their speed metal past with the melodies of the 'new' BG (pre-Imaginations). I listened to Twilight yesterday for the first time in a long time and actually WANTed more BG like that. It's a shame, to me, that they've evolved beyond the boundaries of 'typical' power metal.
What if Andre leaves? Is it still BG if Hansi continues? Thomen was a big part of the band. Sure, "anyone can play the drums", but they're going to play it their own way and add their own influences and technique. Filling his spot and still making it sound like BG will be difficult. But as stated by them, they have people in mind for the job. But maybe you're right. Maybe it should be "only average disc they have released". But I can't listen to A Night at the Opera without cringing. I do hope they drop the choirs, but leave backing vocals of course. I want the POWER put back in the music. |
I've only heard one song off Night At the Opera and I love it, the song Battlefield.
|
ExitWoundI see your point. It's normal not to be satisfied with BG's direction since you seem to be an old school aggressive power/speed fan. We just have to be patient until the new album I guess
I don't think that A Night At The Opera was actually that bad an album in its own right...compared to some of Blind Guardian's older releases it was pretty mediocre, but there was still some mighty fine music on there in my opinion. Having said that, less choirs on the next album is still a good thing. A Night At The Opera did go over the top several times with that.
I agree with this.
I've only heard one song off Night At the Opera and I love it, the song Battlefield.
It certainly has its moments, cool song indeed |
Dragonforce!!!!!!!! \m/ \m/
Don't know any other power metal. But I once got an angra song and it was so da.mn gay I had to delete it. Right away. And then take a shower.
PEOPLE. Download sabaton. Trust me. Get 'Primo Victoria' |

If you like the bardic and melodic elements of Blind Guardian, I recommend you look into Wuthering Heights and Lost Horizon respectively. Unfortunately, I've had little luck in getting my hands on some Galloglass. A couple other recommendations I'd give you would be Savatage, Tarot, Nightwish, and Manowar. Savatage and Tarot have the more aggressive sound of Iced Earth, Manowar has strong heavy metal influences, and Nightwish are a very epic-sounding symphonic band. For specific albums, I highly recommend: Lost Horizon - A Flame to the Ground Beneath Savatage - Streets: a Rock Opera Tarot - Suffer Our Pleasures Nightwish - Century Child Manowar - Kings of Metal |
mmm...Hey everyone.
I'm not a big fan of power metal, mostly becuase lyrics can go off the board a little at times. But I like some such as Children Of Bodom, Stratovarius, Savatage, Dragonforce, Nightwish is alright as well, Blind Guardian and Iced earth. I'm expanding horizons too, I think. So I'll be checking back on this thread later to see some more songs. :thumb: |
Again, you may download some Galloglass from my site as well. I've put up a few tracks for you to sample. Good stuff. Apparently, their new disc is being released in August. Download them here. I don't want to post the whole album because I think that these bands, who play for no more than 1000 people at a time, deserve your purchase to continue making these incredible records. They may not be on air or widespread, but they're musicians trying to get by too.
Places to get Galloglass: http://www.theendrecords.com, http://www.amazon.com |
ExitWound, glad that you brought up Nostradameus. I recall downloading a Nostradameus song on your website, having lyrics about "rape, rape your daughter, etc.". What song is that, and what album is that on? Thanks.
On another note, Skylark's singer is VERY HOT . Is the band any good, and what's an album I should check out? |

Wow...just wow... |

That's "Far Too Strong" from The Third Prophecy, easily the best song on the disc. Freddy's screams at 2.19 and 2.28 make my nerves tingle. So much power behind them.
Download it here. |
If I only listen to Iced Earth and Children of Bodom, what would be a good step for listening to more power metal?
|
Again, you may download some Galloglass from my site as well. I've put up a few tracks for you to sample. Good stuff. Apparently, their new disc is being released in August. Download them here.
If you like Children of Bodom you'd love Stratovarius. It's like the same thing without the speed metal heaviness and just as much melody. The singing can be a bit cheesy at times but overall its pretty good.
