Well then there's precious little to like in the genre to begin with...

Yeah I still enjoy the ambient Paysage stuff.
Shitty bands outnumber the good bands in almost every genre. There are plenty of good black metal bands around but you might have to look harder than Myspace and forums to find them.

i dont know whats more pathetic, the fact that a myspace was made just for USBM, or that the genre itself gets a flag. and a really comical flag at that.

It's not worth the search tbh. And usually the more well known bands of a genre are at least good, so you don't have to track down a 66 copy demo of some obscure early 90s band or some ****. I don't know about you but I don't really have the time or patience to find much good black metal, not that I give a **** about the genre anymore, but even when I did it was a pain in the *** finding good stuff.

EDIT - Notice how for USBM one of their top friends is Satan lmao.

The same happened to me with punk rock back in my younger days. It took waaaay too much effort to find acceptable bands by my peers, so I decided to quit it because it was getting annoying "who listens to the most obnoxious band".

Same with metal, same with pop, same with all music. The key is enjoying what you like, whether it's bleak music.

Stormrider 10-03-2007 06:07 PM

Looking for new black metal, and going through bands to see if any of them are worthy is definitely not something I force myself to do. I enjoy it.

Though, I don't get 20 things at once either.

my friends make fun of me all the time for listening to "metal" in general. it gets old fast. still, im not going to stop listening to it.

The second sentence is exactly where you are wrong. I see where you are coming from, you didn't care enough to actually look deep enough in the genre so you just gave up on it as a whole. It is kind of like looking at the scene of an oil spill and assuming there is nothing but more of the same dirty oil under the surface.

I think it's more of a point of not caring enough to waste my time to listen to mounds of **** to get to a good band. Instead I think I'll just stick with Bathory Burzum and Darkthrone if I'm ever in the mood. It's like diving into an oil spill to get something that you already have.

Niflheim 10-03-2007 06:17 PM

Yeah I get it, you don't want to put any time or effort into searching, which is ok. Seems like a case of the gimmie, gimmie, gimmie attitude.

You couldn't be more wrong with this statement, but I don't see why anyone is wasting time with trying to make you think otherwise.

The majority of posters in this thread will have "grown up and out of black metal" in a few years time.

how many years have you been listening to black metal just out of curiosity?

I did put time into searching but it was a waste of time in hindsight.

OrcDemon666 10-03-2007 07:21 PM

I think I agree with Silenius here. People with full-time college, jobs, families and other more important issues (like musical projects!) don't always have hours of each day or bottomless wells of money to devote to discovering new bands, especially when they know what records get them off anyway. That's not to say none of you other guys have important crap goin' on, it's just a lack of time and initiative on some people's part. Also. in any genre, there's usually a sort of "buzz" created around the quality bands and you can check it out at your leisure. Or if you happen to discover some awesome band by accident, that's cool too. In my experience, it's always been an accident, an friendly introduction, or wor-of-mouth that got me into a band, never have I found anything completely fulfilling by means of an exhaustive search for "The Holy Grail."

Niflheim 10-03-2007 07:23 PM

You're right, the listener is the problem, not the genre.

OrcDemon666 10-03-2007 07:26 PM
You're right, the listener is the problem, not the genre.
That's partially true. It's not really a problem at all. If you think someone's stupid for not obsessing over a genre that's your problem, not theirs.

I agree. I don't have time to dig through endless useless black metal bands when there are bands that really aren't that hard to find waiting out there for me. Plus, those bands are even more enjoyable now because they sound completely different than what I'd been listening to before, whereas the black metal band would be the same idea, but not so damn boring, or whatever. For example, lately I've been digging Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, Lightning Bolt, My Bloody Valentine, etc. It really wasn't hard at all to find them, and they're excellent.

In short, why bother digging for something that's good and just a slightly different twist on what you've heard a million times before, when you can just look into a different genre and find something good that's completely different?

I'll just be satisfied with the good black metal I've already found and find good bands elsewhere.

Niflheim 10-03-2007 07:55 PM

Maybe because you like black metal? Thats not a good enough reason to dig through the genre to find some better bands?

OrcDemon666 10-03-2007 08:00 PM

I don't think this is going anywhere with Niflheim. If he wants to obsess over black metal, then let him. Some people like music, some people only like one genre and their seven thousand sub-genres.

Congratulations on 420 posts though Niflheim. Burn one down.

RiceMonster 10-03-2007 08:00 PM
Maybe because you like black metal? Thats not a good enough reason to dig through the genre to find some better bands?
Not if there's tons of other bands that I'm more eager to hear that I don't have to spend forever digging for. I've got everything I want from black metal. Not going to bother digging anymore.

How am I obsessing? It's just funny these people who used to love the genre gave it up because it was too difficult to find more bands. Not just that, once they stopped listening to black metal they decide to go back to the whole " it all sounds the same" phase.

RiceMonster 10-03-2007 08:07 PM

Actually, I would never say I "gave black metal up". I still like it - I'm just getting into other stuff, which I've been really enjoying. However, I would say I got sick of the same discussions and arguments about black metal over and over again.

I dunno... just seems like yer tryin' to convince someone to spend hours upon hours searching for "holy grails" within a genre. I think it's ok for people to just like the handful of bands doing high-quality stuff within many genres, instead of sifting through loads of crap within one genre to find a semi-precious jewel. If you happen to find something special, then spread the word.
