Didn't anyone else think Lars' drumming kicked on St Anger? for me, he was the only one that improved...

superpeer 12-19-2003 06:08 AM

If you like trashcans instead of drums

Mustaine27 12-19-2003 06:10 AM

^ Just what I was thinking. Lars' drumming was terrible.

Firecracker 12-19-2003 06:14 AM

i think i want to see metallica sometime.

Mustaine27 12-19-2003 08:07 AM

Is it me or does it seem like Lars struggles on the drums?

It looks like he's putting effort in yeah, but I dunno.....it seems like he can't deal with his drumming half the time. He's had an injury since the Black Album and I think it was caused by him trying to hard. I'm not trying to call Lars crap or anything but it does seem like he needs a few Drumming lessons.

Please, please give me educated views.....don't say "I'd like to see you drum as well as Lars you ****ing Dickhead!"

Ramsey 12-19-2003 08:14 AM

^ He does seriously. Besides, his beats are fairly simple.
But imo, his drumming on reload and load are some of the BEST SLOW rock drumming i've ever heard; powerful and meaningful;' just the way i like it. (just as frail said too btw)

RockerGav 12-19-2003 08:15 AM

He's ntohing special.

He does keep the beat, he's solid, not fancy.

Squirrel 12-19-2003 08:25 AM

Lars seems ok to me; not astounding but not crappy either. I also noticed that he seems to struggle to play them; he's panting, sweating, cant keep his mouth closed and he has a strained face like he can't handle it. But, meh, Metallica own most bands today anyway :thumb:

i think because of the injury, he could use some more practice, a rotator cuff injury is something work with, he shouldn't really be playing to hard either. Drumming lessons will help him get back in the big rythem, like when he was in ...And Justice For All and stuff.

kirk_wylde 12-19-2003 01:38 PM

I agree, but overall is drumming is pretty good (nice double bass on the early albums) But yeah he does look like he's straining himself

superpeer 12-19-2003 04:08 PM

t3h bumping

ZildjianDummer 12-19-2003 04:13 PM

thanks, ***. lol jk so bumping makes the thread bigger so it makes people not want to make more threads? im sitll stupid i thnk.
Didn't anyone else think Lars' drumming kicked on St Anger? for me, he was the only one that improved...
i dont think he got worse for sure... he has some crazy double bass. I dont know if you play drums, but going really fast at the rate he does makes you sweat pretty bad. Hes sticking his tounge out for fun, not cuz he cant handle it. The injury doesnt help either. obviously hes not as good as buddy rich or alot of those other guys, but hes up there.
also, a lot of his beats are simple because back in the 80's almost all rock had simple beats.

BarraBooRadley 12-19-2003 04:51 PM

Metallica and Slipknot

Didn't see this before I posted.Yes I'm a newby but got my ticket for europe tour etc and found out Slipknot supporting in most of Europe....Should I laugh or cry

0000 12-19-2003 05:02 PM

I found that out today too. You should weep. We all should.

superpeer 12-19-2003 05:04 PM

I would not cry, I would kill for tickets

Suffering Dead 12-19-2003 05:24 PM

who cares what slipknot does, metallica still kicks ***, and i'm sure they won't play any bull**** off of st anger, or maybe one or two songs. ****, i can't wait till they come, i gotta get tickets a.s.a.p.

timmccarty143 12-19-2003 06:35 PM

timmccarty143 12-19-2003 06:36 PM

and also i play some bass and if ne one has heard his bass solo u know hes good

LeadGuitarist 12-19-2003 06:58 PM

Anyone think it weird of me to like Metallica as well as AFI? I am a true Metallica fan, but I've recently been spending my time listening to AFI's new album Sing the Sorrow. Any other Metallica fans like AFI?
If you like trashcans instead of drums
That has nothing to do with his playing, just the sound. I think his drumming is awesome on that album. IMO he hasn't played that good since ...And Justice For All.

twood 12-19-2003 07:32 PM

I've just got back from their London show. It was......amazing.

They played a really good mix, the obligatory greatest hits, and some unexpected ones. Damage Inc., for one. That was a shock to me.

They played 3 St. Anger songs. Frantic, Dirty Window, and St. Anger. And quite frankly I wanted more. I think many people would be surprised at how good those songs sounded tonight. But to be fair, they did 'fix' them. Frantic (Which I always thought was a good song anyway), is now graced by a short, sharp, bloody fast solo in the middle, plus double-timing the intro. Dirty Window also got a proper solo inserted that was surprisingly good. St. Anger didn't get a solo, but again had the riffs 'thrashed up', and the moved the chorus chords/riff down an octave, which makes a hell of a difference. This just showed me what I thought all along - St. Anger has some really great songs on it that were badly let down through some crap arrangement and production. Tone Lars' drums down, speed the riffs up and put in a solo or two and hey, look, its Metallica back to their usual immense self.

After the double-encore that you knew was coming a mile off (Hey, they're getting old, not surprised they need a rest after finishing Master of Puppets ;)), they actually did the only 'spontaneous' encore I've seen. In the middle of throwing the plectrums out into the crowd, James suddenly got behind the drums, started strumming while playing the bass drum with his foot, said 'While we're here.........', and off they went into 'Am I Evil', the only Load/Re-Load tune of the night, followed by....wait for it......Hit the Lights. Oh yes. :D

lets not forget Peter Brampton's talking guitar :thumb:

ZildjianDummer 12-19-2003 09:38 PM

hey, thats awesome about the spiffy st. anger, id love to hear some of it.

xtreme_skatah 12-19-2003 11:53 PM

That must have been a kickass concert. I wanna see them when they come to Australia but the tickest sold out on the first day. It sucked.

The guy who said that Lars is panting, he does that only when the camera is focusing on him. I watch him sometimes when the cameras aren't on him and he plays like a normal drummer.

And I'm getting the Binge & Purge dvd for xmas yeah! Can't wait till I watch it.

Scythe404 12-19-2003 11:53 PM

I apologize if this has been discussed (im too lazy to scroll back 40 pages), but who here will be attending a concert on their upcoming tour? Despite St. Anger they are a good band and im looking forward to the show.

Yeah, AFI are good.

I actually listen to more pop-punk than I would admit to a lot of people in R & M. (Millencolin, Green Day, NOT Simple Plan etc.)

Oh, and The Offpsring, I fuckin love The Offspring.
