Yeah, I didn't feel like mentioning all their projects. I was getting tired writing what I already did.

3 was an estimate. But I think it's about right.

A Winter's Tale
Days Of The Phoenix
This Celluloid Dream

and I think that's about it. I don't think GNG is pop-punk to be honest. It's not all that different from something like The Nephilim. I'd put it under melodic hardcore.
I have never heard anyone refer to anything pre-STS as pop punk, so I was thinking "mainstream". DOTP I can see. This Celluloid Dream....not really. It's certainly more mainstream than the demo version, but I don't think it's in the ranks of MCR or Simple Plan or anything. Same with A Winter's Tale (except for the part about the demo)

Fire Away 09-19-2005 01:39 AM

it does annoy me how people consider pop punk = mainstream. AFI should be in the emo/hardcore thread IMO. they are Post-hardcore.

It's a common misconception that mainstream = pop-punk. However that is very wrong. I'm talking about pop-punk like The Adicts and Descendents.

MCR and Simple Plan are NOT pop-punk. That's why it's safe to say that AFI has pop-punk songs and none sound like those bands. Those bands are considered pop-rock/power pop.

Pop-punk is poppy punk. And that is more or less what the songs I listed are.

_ThisSecretNinja_ 09-19-2005 03:21 AM

Hmmm theres a couple of songs on the first album that border on being pop punk...Rizzo in the Box and Dont Make Me Ill both have pretty poppy choruses.

i would class simple plan as more of a 'boy band'. But bands like Blink, Greenday, MxPx even old Good Charlotte are pop-punk.
most punk bands nowadays are pop-punk. people say bands like Anti-Flag and NOFX are the new Sex Pistols or Ramones, but even A-F and NOFX are pop-punk

RIP Ian Curtis 09-19-2005 09:45 AM

I like pop-influenced punk like The Undertones way more than anything particularly raw or hardcore, but when "pop-influenced" because "just pop", you get Greenday.

I have to use a different set of language around people who know what they're talking about and those who watch MTV. I usually forget who's which. In fact, I think we went over this before. I asked my friend about emo and she went "ask val she knows everything about emo" so I asked for a band rec and what the band sounded like. She said some acoustic rock band O.o I was like "so....nothing like Fugazi?" and she went "Who's Fugazi" *slaps forehead* I've started to go "Wait wait! Real emo or what-gets-called-emo?" when people say "emo" now.

There's this chick on the bus who is always like "I'm not a poser, I'm a REAL punk!!!" even when people don't tell her she's a poser, and all she listens to is like, Slipknot and Evanescencse. And wrote ANARCHY on her shoes.

Hep Kat 09-19-2005 03:12 PM

ANARCHY+evanescence= apocolypse

po·seur Audio pronunciation of "poseur" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (p-zr, pzr)
n.

One who affects a particular attribute, attitude, or identity to impress or influence others.

Let's Chop Cats! 09-20-2005 01:37 PM

It's poser here in America. The -ur is a British thing, like 'colour'.

Flagjacket 09-20-2005 02:49 PM

I live in Michigan and I spell it poseur.

maco 09-20-2005 11:02 PM

Yeah, I'm in PA and my teachers corrected kids for spelling it "poser" before.

Though, personally, I do spell things like colour, honour, theatre, et cetera. But I know teachers have fixed spellings on that before.

Even after I started looking into a lot of hardcore, SYMAOYE still remains my favorite hardcore album.
im suprised this AFI thread lasted so long
To be honest, I am too. This thread is longer than the Official Against Me! thread, and with this post I am making now, it is the same length as the Official Streetlight thread.
