Not I.
Does anyone else cringe at the really bad "Hold it up now. Wait a minute!" At the beggining of Take the Time?
Not really. I think that's some of his coolest singing, and definitely the some of the coolest playing from the band. I love that song. |
I can't wait for DT's new albun (June 7th) Octavarium. Cool tracknames, it wil rock.
I still don't think that I&W is that good...
If I&W was produced, like, now...I might like it a little more. The overal production of it is part of why I don't like it as much. But just in general, they don't have anything that is that heavy on that album, therefore, I don't like it as much. That being said, I'd like to see their next album be closer to Awake or Train of Thought than anything else. We'll see what happens, I suppose.
i really like the production for I&W, the drums sound amazing |
Sorry if this has been asked before but does anyone have MP3's of DT's cover of Master of Puppets (album). If not do you guys know where I could download them from?
|
That "Hold it up now, wait a minute" is sampled isn't it?
I prefer the range JLB desplays on ToT and SDoIT to any other album, but my favourite vocals are on The Spirit Carries On. Also, I'm not sure that Myung doesn't talk because he's bullied, I just get the impression that he's kinda shy and doesn't like to. If anybody'd be bullied in that band it'd be JLB. |
I dunno...Labrie's vocal range impresses me on a lot of their albums.
On IaW...that part in Learning to Live when he just does the "whoas" from low (high to everyone else) to really high on Awake...the way he sings on The Mirror/Lie and ToT, with In the Name of God, this one part, he follows the guitars/keyboards perfectly, its really good. About JLB being bullied, you can tell on the Budokan DVD you are right, when they are doing the Iron Maiden album and they are talking and they are like "Yeah, we got the copy, you need to go listen to it" when James wasn't gettin' it...I thought it was pretty funny. BTW, I was watching the 5 Years in a Lifetime DVD and "Close my Eyes" is like, an amazing song. Anyone know where I can get it? I haven't actively looked, but is it a cover? |
People have forgot about this thread :)
|
Guys, what is you favourite Dt Album for guitar sounds? Mine is Either Images and Words or Train of Thought. Two completely different sounds but both amazing.
|
Screw guitars :p , the drums on the Live in Budokan DVD sound phenomanal.
I can't spell. |
They do they do.

Live At Budokan. So much chunkiness, but tonnes of clarity. Thinking of This Dying Soul's breakdown here, with the 'TGP' riff. So much better utilised in TDS, even though its a reprise. |

Never!!! :amaze: |
Awake has the best bass stuff IMO, Images and Words has the best keyboards, drums are always sick, and for guitar I'd have to say Images and Words or Awake.
|
In terms of, like, instrument tones, I think Awake, Six Degrees, and ToT have my favorite tones...
Lots of crunch  |
The keyboards kicked major *** on Train Of Thought. James' voice was growley on Awake which was pretty cool.

Lots of crunch
I am in agreement, although the crunch on ToT made for a pretty toneless album. /ToT bashing again from the man formerly known as Ripper22...sorry, Joz. :) |

/ToT bashing again from the man formerly known as Ripper22...sorry, Joz. :)
What do you mean a 'toneless' album? |
as far as what I own..first..and whatnot
first was Images & Words, followed by Budokan, Live Scenes, then Scenes from a Memory, Awake, Train of Thought, then 6 Degree's favorite to listen to..Scenes, hasta be Scenes meh, it's good though favorite songs.. In The Name of God Home(which, I'm proud that I can play, fun stuff) Metropolis(5 minutes of that) aand Stream of Consciousness |
What do you mean a 'toneless' album?
I meant there was little organic feel to the guitar sounds: just gobs and gobs and gobs of gain. Not like a lot of the tones of 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence, which seemed equally heavy but much tighter-sounding. |
This has probably already been adressed in here, I just don't want to look through 35 pages of thread, but anybody else really into the Sherinian stuff with DT. He had some decent solos, and provided a lot of landscape for the sound. I just wish DT was able to have written FII the way they wanted to so we could really see what Sherinian was capable of in the band.

There hasn't been much talk about Sherinian in here, to be honest. I'm curious about what he did to get kicked out. The general consensus is that "he acted too much like a rock star." What the heck does that mean? |

He was fired because the band wanted Jordan Rudess for a long time, and had finally become available. That doesn't mean he may not have partaken in being a rock star too much, but the primary reason was because they could finally add Jordan to their line up. im glad.....jordan is mad...even tho i only have Scenes and ToT.........Scenes is my fave album of all time...its so good
|
I wish they would hurry up and post US tour dates.

actually they wanted jordan when kevin moore left but he couldnt for some reason so derek was there until jordan decided to join and they kicked derek out. i think i heard that on the "5 years in a lifetime" dvd commentary i didnt care much for derek anyway |
Sherinian was fairly decent..iunno, Moore grew on me since my first album was Images, I thought he was pretty good
then I went from that straight to Jordan, Jordan's got his chops down well..his part in Caught in a New Millenium intro...that was pretty sweet meh, he's good too..I'll say that.. forgot to mention having Falling Into Infinity..I like that one too..'m sorry..Peruvian Skies has so much of an Enter Sandman kinda feel in some of the riffing..I just hafta laugh, nontheless..a good listen |
If anyone's interested in the DT cover of Master of Puppets, here's the WinRAR file with all the songs. Enjoy.

I was at school yesterday and my metal head freind said "John Petrucci is the greatest guitarists ever!" and I asked why and he replied that he was "technicly perfect" and that lead my couriosity here to ask you guys what should I start with? What is a song that showcases Petrucci's guitarist skills and is less metal? I have heard some Dream Theater before but it sounded loud and distorted but they said "that was their metal album". So I just wanted to ask about it here. :)
