Gilmour is a more melodic singer than Waters, although Waters has the edge when it comes to range.
And in terms of talent, Gilmour > Waters in songwriting and musicianship. Meanwhile, minutes silence please, to mourn the loss of three Floyd songs from the ultimate band poll. :upset: |
OK, let me start out by saying that Pink Floyd is by far the absolute best band in the world. I LLLOOOOVVVEEE Pink Floyd. And as far as the eerie lyrics go, I'd have to say "The Great Gig in the Sky". Why? Listen really closely 3:33 into the song and you can hear a girl whisper, "If you can hear this whisper, you're dying." AHH. It's so freaky.
|
And as far as The Dark Side of the Moon matching up with the Wizard of Oz, it's true. I can't count how many times I've done it haha. And the CD ends half way through and I figured out that Animals is the second half of that movie. It's mad. I love it.
|
Really? So do you start Animals immeadiately when DSOTM ends?

Woah, I just tried that and she sounds like she's saying "If you hear this silent whisper, then you're dying". |

It says "I never said I was afraid of dying." End of story. /and old news. |

It would be cool if that worked, but there are so many rumors about synchronizing Floyd albums with movies that it's hard for me to believe that. |
Well, there is that.
And I shall devote my afternoon to determining exactly what that girl says. |

i personally think that the most haunting lyrics from a floyd song for me are the lyrics to "Outside of the Wall" from The Wall album.
All alone, or in two's, The ones who really love you Walk up and down outside the wall. Some hand in hand And some gathered together in bands. The bleeding hearts and artists Make their stand. And when they've given you their all Some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy Banging your heart against some mad bugger's wall. Did anyone notice the little monologue at the beginning or Disk 1, and at the end of disk 2? If you run the end of disk 2 directly into the start of disk 1, David Gilmour cues in the band and asks "Isn't this where we came in?" Could this suggest that Pink's problems are a continuous cycle? I know that the first song of disk one is also rehashed with different lyrics later on Disk Two as Pink changes his attitude toward his fans and life......but could the hidden voice mean more than that? Any thoughts? |
Hehe, if Animals is the second half of the movie, that would zwn ;)

As for Great Gig in the Sky, she's saying "I never said I was afraid of dying" END OF STORY. In interviews, thats what they said. Listen closely, its very clear thats what she's saying. |
oh man, the first time i threw my dad's old dark side of the moon album on the turn table, it blew my mind. It was just nothing less than amazing. (Soon after i took up sniffing things)

I could see some parts that relate to each other, but you have to try really hard to convince yourself that they're actually synched. Its fun to try though. |
Agreed. The synch is overrated.

Lyrics included? If so, I believe it was Waters who wrote the tunes that made Gilmour famous. |

Songwriting, as in music as well as lyrics. Waters is a great lyricist, but lyrics are only part of the song. |
To me, that's the final touch in the genius that is The Wall. It would be easy to think if you work your way through that album that things get better, with The Trial, and Outside The Wall...it would make sense that Pink escapes his troubles. It's just such a great end to the concept that his problems don't end, or change in any way, but simply go back to the start. There aren't many other bands that could have thought up something like that.
Yea that was amazing. A great way to end The Wall. I was thinking today, what's everyone's favorite lyrics from The Wall? I love the middle verse in Hey You: "But it was only fantasy, The Wall was too high, as you can see, No matter how he tried he could not break free. And the worms ate into his brain." |
 The Wall cycle is genius. I never knew about that, I'm gonna try it right now. But that's such a good idea.
As for my favorite lyric, probably off of "The Thin Ice" "Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice Appears under your feet. You slip out of your depth and out of your mind With your fear flowing out behind you As you claw the thin ice." And the chilling solo that follows just makes it all the more better. |
The entire album is ****ing brilliant. But I love the lyrics to Mother. They're great. Especially that last line... "mother did it need to be so high?" It just sends chills down my spine.

I find Another Brick In the Wall Part 3 to be underrated. Great lyrics.

most haunting lyrics are to "when the tigers broke free, with those dark drums goin on, and his incredibly expressionable voice....

Waters wrote the lyrics, but Gilmour added the musical soul to the songs. Gilmour came up with the chord progression and melody to Comfortably Numb before Waters had the lyrics to it. ABITW pt.2 would have just been plain old guitar strumming if Gilmour didnt add the disco feel to it. Dogs is great lyrically, but Gilmours amazing guitar work made it amazing. So basically, they complemented each other very well. |

I agree, most people just listen to 1 and 2, and completely overlook the ender to the ABITW series. I like how its agressive, and it fits perfect into movie too. |

Well, I think In The Flesh is a great opening song with lyrics that kinda drag you into the album, but for absolute favorite, I'd pick "Did, did, did, did you ever wonder why We had to run for shelter When the promise of a brave new world Unfurled beneath a clear blue sky" from Goodbye Blue Sky, it gives me the chills everytime. |

If you ask me, the best songs were produced when Waters and Gilmour worked together. Towards the end of Roger's presence in the band, Gilmour somewhat lost control of what was going on. I guess right after Wish You Were Here, Animals was the start of the Waters takeover. |
Yeah, according to the biography I read, the fighting and megalomania of Waters started around 1975. So, around the time Wish You Were Here came out.
|
You can hear the drastic change in mood from WYWH to Animals, and then to the Wall. It was mainly the start of Water's dark, depressing lyrics and mood, because by about that time they were playing before huge arena audiences which Roger hated.
