Well worth the 3month wait for it.
Yeh, I had to order it in too. Took me around that time, maybe even a bit longer

ElectricalStorm 03-12-2005 09:44 PM

Are there any fans of Masterplan in this thread? I've mentioned them in a couple other related topics and was met with no response in either, hopefully this will be a bit a different--Masterplan being a power metal band and this being a power metal thread.

Anyway if you haven't heard of them this is a brief post I made about them in another thread,

"Masterplan was formed by ex-Helloween members Roland Grapow and Uli Kusch shortly after they were booted from of Helloween after the The Dark Ride album. They have a couple of albums, the latest being released at the end of this month.[January] I haven't heard anything from the new album, but the their first release--which is self titled--is top-notch. They have an amazing vocalist and if that weren't good enough, Michael Kiske does the vocals to one track as well."

I have ordered their second cd through amazon but it is yet to come, both albums are strictly import only.

I haven't been able to hear any masterplan stuff sadly, but then again I'm not that big a fan of Rolands guitar work with helloween..

Stoic 03-13-2005 05:01 AM
^ Yeah.
Also check out Manticora if you haven't. They're not flower metal, but shi.t some good fvcking power metal up your as.s.
I was lucky enough to find their latest album, 8 Deadly Sins, at a second hand CD store for 5e. It's a pretty good band although I dont like the vocals at times. They could have been more flexible if you know what I mean and sometimes they sound a bit out of tune...
I discovered Dragonforce a couple of days ago when a kid in my computers class was playing some. I think they're amazing.

I'm gonna have to check out some of the other bands mentioned in this thread and get back to you.
DragonForce own, i have both 'Valley Of The ****ed' and 'Sonic Firestorm,' but prefer 'Valley Of The ****ed,' the high point being 'Black Winter Night.'

If you like DragonForce, check out Angra.
God, you guys need to check out Space Odyssey.

NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the guys voice.

Superfly 03-13-2005 07:33 AM

 I found a review of it:

This vocal wonder also saves this album, which basically has zero originality. It quotes and steals everywhere. But in supreme quality.

I've only heard one song (Enlighten Me), but I didn't think it was that good. I'll go give it another listen though, maybe I just kinda glazed over it because I heard it at the same time as a load of other stuff.

None of the cd shops near me stock masterplan cd's...can't find anything on kazaa either..

Any fans of labyrinth here?

I heard it via it's video, on a DVD compilation. There were plenty of other songs on there overshadowing it, so I didn't think much of it at the time.

Superfly 03-13-2005 10:32 AM

I'm guessing they're probably not anything special..

Bartender 03-13-2005 10:33 AM

Who/what?

Masterplan.

Well, in a world where everything has been played and everything is retro, this is what we should be looking for...

Well Masterplan are certainly nowhere near Dragonforce or Blind Guardian in terms of originality and in that respect their sound is very retro. I wouldn't really label them as unoriginal though, they just play a very quintesstial form of power metal--without many of the bells and whistles that many modern power metal bands now include (like orchestra's). At worst one can fairly say that they play a generic brand of pm, but even so, they do it very well. And the vocalist is definitely a highlight.

Bartender: Enlighten Me isn't one of my favorites songs either, oh well don't judge em too quickly. :thumb:

And for all those having trouble finding songs and albums, as I said before the albums are pretty much import only

Stoic 03-13-2005 01:32 PM

yay! Jon Schaffer and Hansi Kursch (adore him) are working on the new demons and wizards album, which will be possibly released on summer!

Arucard 03-13-2005 01:35 PM
I got sent some Dragonforce music over MSN today, and it didn't really sound much like I suspected, as it kind of sounds like a pop song to me, only obviously with crazy drums/guitar parts going on in the background. I quite liked it, even though it got a bit repetitive, but basically, is this typical either of their sound, or of the genre as a whole? I'm a complete n00b to power metal, so apologies if I'm asking something really stupid here, but I'm just really curious about it.
No, it doesnt represent the genre very well. I love DragonForce, but they are definatly the happiest PM band about, and they pull off what they do very well. Check out some Iced Earth or Stratavarious if your a PM noob.

Stoic 03-13-2005 01:43 PM

and Blind Guardian of course...
'Excalibur! Sword of the king!'
Yea, thats not a Blind Guardian song.

Recommendations for power metal n00bs:

Blind Guardian
Mirror Mirror
Into the Storm
Time What is Time
Battlefield
Traveler in Time

Stratovarius
Black Diamond
Speed of Light
Father Time
Will the Sun Rise?
Hunting High and Low

Helloween (the originators of the genre)
Eagle Fly Free
I Want Out
I'm Alive
Revelations
Power

Rhapsody
Emerald Sword
Wisdom of the Kings
Power of the Dragonflame
Unholy Warcry
Warriors of Ice

That should be enough to get you started.

Any who, I brought Stratovarius - Episode (bringing the total number of Strato CD's I have to 2!) today so I'm a happy panda. I also got Queensr˙che's s/t, but I don't know they're considered power metal. They certainly have their PM moments.

Sorry, I was talking about that space oddessy band when I said that.

Lord Abortion 03-14-2005 03:14 AM

dragonforce are cool but the vocals seem a little weak to me for some reason

Stoic 03-14-2005 04:44 AM

I'm looking for some aggressive (=non happy) euro power (choirs are very welcome), in the vein of Blind Guardian and of a less happy Avantasia and Freedom Call...
(I'm already familiar with Morgana Lefay and Brainstorm)

RideTheSpiral 03-14-2005 06:35 AM

I think I have four or five Stratovarius albums.

They struggle, except Elements Pt 1. Excellent album.

Kotipelto's solo work is awesome though. More Kotipelto less fatass Tolkki.
