I got my copy of Do Make Say Think's newest album yesterday. It's pretty clutch.

Spaceman Spiff 11-04-2009 05:11 PM

I've been listening to a ton of Animal Collective recently. I love that band so much. Definitely one of my favorites.

I saw them live earlier this year and it was a pretty excellent show.

I have no way of ordering a package with a single version, so maybe things are different in the States.

I'm getting the 64-bit version free because I'm in a computer science class at my community college.

Apparently it's not just an upgrade, but I can reformat a harddrive and do a full install as well. Can anybody confirm this?

Probably. I also got it through my school, which is why it only cost me 20 bucks.

so i got this P-Bass copy, the brand's Sledgehammer by JB Player. anyone knows if it's any good? it has a nice feel to it but the tone is kinda meh. would some GFS pups fix that? also i've been playing guitar for a while, like 5 years or summat, where could i start to play bass decently?

gaslight 11-05-2009 09:56 AM

Never heard of the brand.

What do you mean by where could you start? What kind of knowledge base do you already have from guitar?

Never heard of it.

I've never heard of that brand of pickup either. I don't know how much you're willing to invest into it, but the passive Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders are absolutely secks on a P-bass. Only ~$65 too, so they don't break the bank.

As far as learning to play decently? I recommend a teacher. Most guitarists I know that have switched over either can't break free from the pick (not a bad technique, but it's nice to expand your horizons on different instruments) or have absolutely terrible right-hand fingering technique.

Super Nintendo 11-05-2009 10:11 AM

scales, modes, how to create chords, etc . im looking mainly as like the technical part since i understand some basic concepts of music like i said above.

i see, thanks mate! i kinda play some latin stuff in guitar but it can be different in bass. i can ask my church's bassist for some help but i'd like some stuff to practice first. i do it mostly for fun since guitar is my primary instrument. also so i can record my bass tracks too.

gaslight 11-05-2009 10:30 AM

To develop really sound technique in your left and right hand, it's best to get a good teacher. Learning from textual descriptions is possible but not ideal, same deal for videos. Can't beat the (experienced and knowledgeable) human touch.

This is a goal structure I have for students who are serious about getting their bass knowledge up, it's my view of a good starting platform to work towards in bass knowledge.

* Know all the notes on your neck.

* All the basic triads (maj, min, dim) and seventh chords (maj7, min7, dom7, min7b5) diatonic to the major scale through their inversions.

* Blues scale, major and minor pentatonics, one octave at first then up to two.

* Major scale modes in every key, starting off over one octave then build up to two octaves.

* Be able to play along to a simple 12 Bar Blues form in any given key.

* Be able to sing the notes of your major and natural minor scales over one octave while playing along with the bass initially, working towards being able to do it unaccompanied.

* Clean, healthy technique for the left hand (engaging all fingers) and two finger alternating technique on the right hand.

They're not overnight goals but it's a great set of skills to attain and build on for people serious about their development.

Super Nintendo 11-05-2009 11:31 AM

thanks mate! really appreciate the help.

gaslight 11-05-2009 11:45 AM

No worries man.

The other excellent thing to do of course is just to put on any albums you like, and just go through them start to finish, playing along on bass and trying to pick out the chord progressions and whatnot. Don't even have to grab the exact bassline, just go through each song once doing your damnedest to play along as if you were on a gig trying to hear your way through. Good fun and good for your ears.

Spaceman Spiff 11-05-2009 11:58 AM

The show I went to last night was awesome. Those guys are super tight and ripped it up.

yeah, except that i can't find my microsoft office install CD, and even with the student discount, office 08 is 50 bucks. how is it over twice as expensive to get word processing than an entire OS?
