The Sandman 12-15-2005 08:16 PM

I, personally, don't like Fender's all that much. Maybe it's just because I believe they're over-rated and everyone is just like "z0mg u hv liek a Fendre ur pr0". I also think they're kind of over-priced but hey, it's all opinion.

Shattered_Future 12-15-2005 08:17 PM

Yea, that is one disadvantage with having a Fender (even though I wouldn't know...stupid cheap Chinese Squier.)

I'm interested though...how do you think they're overrated?

Shadows 12-15-2005 08:22 PM

I'm going to kill myself.

blue3 12-15-2005 08:24 PM

Have fun with that.

The Sandman 12-15-2005 08:30 PM

When I first started guitar I was under the impression that the greatest guitar in the world was a Stratocaster. I'm using my own experience and presuming that other people have/had similiar views which maybe I shouldn't be. They are pretty much what most people will think of when they hear the word 'guitar'. I guess the Strat shape did end up more or less being the template for most of the guitars on the market.

I admit that I'm slightly biased though. I went from a Squier Strat which would probably be better suited to starting fires than for playing music to an Ibanez RG1570. Whenever I muck around on my Squier and then go on to play my Ibanez it just feels so much better.

I really should try some of the more up-market Fenders though. I really shouldn't be judging Fenders on the experience I've had with Squier's

Because everyone in the entire guitar-playing world seems to love them for no apparent reason. If you try to bring up the insane amount of hum and feedback, they tell you to "get a Fat Strat (w/ humbuckers)". Why not get a guitar that was made to be used with humbuckers instead? If you try to bring up the terrible rib-snapping discomfort of the Telecaster, they tell you "it's a working-man's guitar".

Fender reportedly has the "best quality", "best sound" and "best playability", and being the proud owner of a large Fender amp and a Strat, I have to say that it's just not true. The amp is just terrible, and I had to replace the bridge of the Strat within a year of buying it.

The last thing I have against Fender is the myth that "every good guitar player played a Fender, including the best guitar player of all time, Jimi Hendrix!!!!" I don't think I need to elaborate.

In other news, COB just passed by my town. :( Damn sold-out small theatres.

The Sandman 12-15-2005 08:43 PM

Toaster's argument > mine.

Something slightly more relevant to the thread...is their new album worth getting? From what I've heard it's meant to be crap...

Shadows 12-15-2005 08:43 PM

Yes, it's worth getting. It's amazing.

IheartSP 12-15-2005 08:48 PM

Depends how picky you are, if you don't like new american sounding metal, you'll hate it. It's nowhere near as well written or sophisticated as the other albums have been, your gonna have to rely more on catchiness and hooks to enjoy this one.

I'm Charming 12-15-2005 09:02 PM

I play a Jackson S30, floyd rose floating tremelo. Sweet guitar, great for metal.

I'm very picky about the picks I will play with, I like .81

Anyone else this picky about pick selection?

Shadows 12-15-2005 09:26 PM

I don't really care about picks. I've come to realize that I do enjoy playing with picks that have some sort of grip on them instead of purely glossed picks.

The Sandman 12-15-2005 11:03 PM

I use Jazz III's.

I'm not a fan of thin picks, I like thicker ones...in the area of 1.0mm. They just feel better to me. I don't like the stubby (I think that's what they're called) ones though...they're like 2.0mm and it feels like you're playing with a...I don't know...something fat.

Shadows 12-15-2005 11:07 PM

I've never experimented with pick gauge, but I do know for sure that I prefer thick picks to thin ones.

The same goes for me and strings. I can't stand palying with anything lighter than .11's.

The Sandman 12-15-2005 11:13 PM

Hahah...we seem to be quite opposite.

I use thick picks but I have .9's on my guitar.

I really should change to at least .10's.

Shred Danson 12-15-2005 11:14 PM

b en i m postin, hope yer happy.

Shadows 12-15-2005 11:18 PM

Trev, you made my day. :D

I hate light strings. It feels so sloppy to play with them, especially while downtuned.

The Sandman 12-15-2005 11:20 PM

Locking nuts don't like down tuning :(

Shadows 12-15-2005 11:20 PM

I know how that is. :( The floating bridge only makes it harder.

EDIT: I now have exactly twice as many posts in this thread as the guy behind me.

Shred Danson 12-15-2005 11:22 PM

hehehhsa he said lcking nutsss!

The Sandman 12-15-2005 11:24 PM

They're both a blessing and a curse.

I think sometime soon, as in when I get enough money, I might buy a Jackson RR3 or something similiar.

I was thinking that I might have the Jackson in D and my Ibanez in E. Which would allow me to play CoB without having to move everything down 1 step.

Shadows 12-15-2005 11:27 PM

I also want to get myself an RR. I was thinking of a 3, but preferrably a 5.

It would also help to have something that works for music that isn't metal, but I'm too metal for that!

Tuning is a huge pain in the *** for me. With two guitars, I wouldn't need to constantly tune and change strings.

The Sandman 12-15-2005 11:38 PM

My Ibanez doesn't sound thaaat bad on clean songs.

It's kind of funny...I used to be in a kind of school jazz band and I'd be playing my Ibanez among all the trumpets and saxaphones. I felt a little out of place but **** it. If any of the jazz people give me crap I'll stab them with the end of my guitar.

That's another upside of Ibanez/Jackson guitars. The headstocks and conveniently pointy.

Shadows 12-15-2005 11:40 PM

That's right. Damn those non-violent Fender heads.

My Jackson gets pretty good cleans when I put on new strings and have it tuned perfectly. But when it's been used for a while and is set for some metal song, it gets pretty bad.

The Sandman 12-15-2005 11:49 PM

That's one thing that makes Gibson and Fender guitar's non-metal in my opinion. If you need to take care of someone it's all the more difficult when you have a club on the end of your guitar.

If only Dimebag played Jackson. That guy that jumped up would have got raped before he could pull the trigger..

Apocalyptic Raids 12-16-2005 02:29 AM

I use thinner picks, around .70mm.

Shred Danson 12-16-2005 09:56 AM
I use thinner picks, around .70mm.
I usually use medium and nylon picks...good for sweeping.

MRDuCran 12-16-2005 05:15 PM

ha i can get my guitar with floyd in e, an octave lower in less that a minute and the strings arent even that loose

Shadows 12-16-2005 05:17 PM

I can do that too, but only because I'm so used to playing with that stuff by now.

MRDuCran 12-16-2005 05:24 PM

I couldn't believe it, everyone in the Guitar forum moaning about how they can't do drop D and stuff, I laugh in their face, I put it in D standard in under 2 mins for the first time ever, then laughed again coz they suck at guitar.

I have floyd rose and floating bridge and I can downtune to Drop D no problem.

It takes a couple times tuning to get used to though.

Then you love it.
