Anyone have any suggestions for any DIY projects I could do at my work?

I'm a youth worker, so anything applicable to 12-17 year olds would be great. I've got some ideas, but nothing super amazing unfortunately. :(

I used my cell phone's headset to make a shoe phone like in Get Smart:

Except it has a wire hanging down. Oh well, I'm going to use my bluetooth to make a wireless retro handset, like this but without the wire:

Pics of the shoe phone soon. So yeah, this is what happens when you drink 4 pitchers of unsweetened iced tea in two days. Don't let anyone tell you caffeine isn't a drug.

I just spent £30 on screen printing stuff :(

I didn't realise my college print room was closed, thought it closed next week. Was planning to buy a screen at my leisure this weekend, expose it next week, and then whenever I have cash over the summer, buy ink & squeegee.

But like, its been closed for a week now, I had to beg the technician to open it for me tomorrow, and I had to rush around trying to find a screen, the only place local that had one was in a kit, so I've got a few kinds of inks, textile + normal medium, a squeegee, etc etc.

Eran - you know what we were saying about rinsing print credits at the end of the year? I actually can't do it. Taking so long. Printed about 800 flyers so far (thats what, 100 sheets of A3 and a few hours on the guillotine), still got like 500 print credits left :(. And I can't even rinse them on the colour printer, because its fucking broken.

Flagjacket 06-20-2007 09:51 AM

Eran is gone.

Jon 06-20-2007 10:33 AM

oh i'll just copy-paste it to him on MSN.

why did he go?

Converge#12 06-20-2007 10:35 AM

Ghostfire3 06-20-2007 11:56 AM

Why wouldn't you want to get stitches?

If you have a huge gaping cut there's probably no way around getting stitches.

Jon 06-20-2007 12:03 PM

cut off a slice of your friend's skin, needle, thread, DIY skin graft!

if that doesn't make laundered i don't know what will

Liebensaft 06-20-2007 12:25 PM

Yeah, if it's that gross, you're pretty much definitely going to need stitches. If you are worried about it hurting or something, it honestly isn't bad at all and will only hurt when they stick the novacain in.

nitzguy 06-21-2007 02:26 PM

SIY... stich it yourself?? you have roughly 9hours to diecide, after that you probably can't get them.

yea hopefully this wekend i'll try my first screen print... it'll suck and still be awesome at the same time. The shirt will be for my frisbee team.

Jon, i saw that you tube video a few days ago and it was pretty much what inspired me to do this. Just need to find time to go get ink and emulsion stuff

AIRIC 06-21-2007 06:59 PM

That is what I would've said if I wasnt a qualified spammer.

Converge#12 06-23-2007 09:49 PM

I ended up just using butterfly bandages and a lot of cleaning stuff. Now to figure out how to reduce scaring as well as keep preventing infection.

Whats something I can make for a gift for a girl as well?

Why wouldn't you just get stiches? They're so easy. Bandages are annoying as hell.

Its kind of late now.

Converge#12 06-24-2007 01:42 PM

I keep it clean its healing up nice, oh well I learned so that if this happens to me again or to someone I know stitches will be the answer.

Jon 06-24-2007 02:10 PM

urgh I can't find that screen printing tutorial I posted ages ago. it had a really easy way to make an exposure unit, I want itttt :(

edit: wait no i think this might have been it

Jon 06-24-2007 04:12 PM

hahah

man, buy a starter kit at least

well actually you could keep your stupid little hoop thing instead of a screen, but at least buy some screen drawing ink, screen block, proper ink + medium etc etc

asdf 06-24-2007 04:51 PM

I made a shirt but my camera broke so I cannot share it with the internets.

Jon 06-24-2007 04:58 PM

Oh I made a few band shirts as well.

Some turned out better, some worse, I think I need some hinge clamps for my screen.

But I think they were pretty alright for the first ones I've done at home, with brand new equipment, without a teacher to help me mix inks etc etc.
