Hang on is ANYONE actually on my side for the whole finding a cure for cancer/diseases thing or am i on my own here :amaze:

neal_672 04-06-2005 05:20 PM
maybe i was being hypocritical - but if you could find a cure for everything on the planet - except old age and accidental deaths and murders - the world would soon have a mass increase of people - what im syaing is - half the worlds population is starving - i wanna solve that - not make the problem worse
That's the thing most countries do both, surely it's also a priority to look after yourself as well as others?

oh yeh
but what do countries like zimbabwe spend aid on? - weapons - not feeding people dying of hunger

neal_672 04-06-2005 05:22 PM

I'm with you on it. I really think it depends on the type of cancer the person has, and how bad they've got it. I mean, if they are one their last set of breaths they shouldn't save them.

That sounds kind of heartless of me.

And to whoever said something about finding an AIDS cure, they have found one that only works in some people. It has something to do with using the person's/other people's DNA. I can try and find the article if you'd like. It was actually rather interesting.

I think a cure would be great.

Here's a hypothetical question, would you shoot a little girl in the face from point blank range in order to cure all the diseases in the world?

And this is relevant how exactly? I thought the debate was curing Cancer etc. It's quite obvious Zimbabwe is not a stable country thus can barely fund itself under the rule of a vicious dictator...

tim_commerfordism 04-06-2005 05:24 PM

you guys, isnt it abit obvious that you should have a cure.

OK, imagine this, your family has a long history of cancer, and say most your family gets it when they reach 60+ years etc.

Wouldnt you personally want them to be cured?

Now imagine all those other families.

what im saying is - concentrate on giving people neough to eat - then concentrate on saving people which will put more strain on the population

neal_672 04-06-2005 05:26 PM

Thank you! I thought i was the only sane person here...

nisakss 04-06-2005 05:27 PM
no - i just think that the population increase should be stopped and if possible the population brought down - not by culling - by way of birth control
and i think that if a cure could be found for disease/cancer id be al for it
but i think its wrong to 'play god', which a cure would be doing
and someone has to think of the repercussions; according to the uk government, one in three people will suffer from cancer at some point in their lives - and 1 in 10 of those will die - so thats 1 in 30 people will be saved from death - if you imagine the amount of people that will be saved and how this will affect the population - the world will not cope
the same with prolonging life - if scientists find a way to prolong life to say, an average of 120 - people will have to work until they are say, 90-100 or otherwise there will be too many people in the category of those who are not working, and the world will collapse because there are not enough people working to support those who arent
i think you should all watch the film 'Extreme Measures' - it raises some severe questions about finding a cure for things - and i would have to say, i agree with what hugh grant says in the scene at the end where he has the gun - you cant choose for people - that is too high a price to find a cure
well...I won't even discuss the cure thing.....hope you never get sick or someone you love for the matter.....

But your argument on the work thing....that has been said time after time, as a matter of fact in the early 30's there was a general concern that automatization would leave people without work and withoout anything to do, a....but the thruth is that year after year people have less free time to spend, and the predictions indicate that this shall remain the same. I think a time may come when money disappears, and there shall be other ways of living.....

That's the point we already concentrate on both!

jaco jr 04-06-2005 05:30 PM
That's the point we already concentrate on both!
cos if you start curing cancer worldwide - then the population will increase making it even harder to find a cure for hunger
im not saying efforts should be postponed - but if you realease a cure for cancer before the cure for hunger is found - the world will struggle more

jaco jr 04-06-2005 05:35 PM

hey neal im off to get some shuteye - youve put in some good arguments - i really am not sure what to think now

Left Shoe 04-06-2005 05:45 PM
oh i think it would be great if there was a cure
but its true
already half the worlds population dont have enough to eat
id wanna reduce the population if it was up to me- not save it
or at least stop the increase

im sorry but cancer doesnt kill that many people deary. if the extremist conservatives found a "cure" for homosexuality we would have more of an overpopulation problem than if we found one for cancer
