With 343 pages, I'm sure every opinion has been tossed around if ever there were any. I almost feel cliche saying "old Metallica" was better or that they sold out. But then again, cliches are born of some truth. Favourite album would have to be Master of Puppets, followed closely by Ride the lightning and Kill em' All. And Justice for All, in my opinion was there last good album. Not that the Black Album didn't have its finer points, and moments of discernable connection with the Metallica of old.....but it was the downward turning point in my estimation, and lacked the edge. I am a Metallica fan for life just on the basis of what they once were, no amount of wrongly evolved future albums will ever change that.

Taylormade 10-16-2004 01:31 AM

Toast to Cliff Burton, he brought finesse to thrash metal you guys have to admit.. To live is to die, awesome solos awesome riffs... Yeah I totally agree with lizzy above, I am also a fan for life, but only on what they once were too.

Taylormade 10-16-2004 01:37 AM

One more thing: The Master of Puppets solo is the most kick *** solo I've ever heard.. And Fade to Black too has a very nice combination of solos..

Riva 10-16-2004 11:38 PM

James is one of the better rhthym guitarists of metal's illustrious history, and in songwriting ability he easily passes Kirk.

chuckles the silly piggy 10-17-2004 02:46 PM

Kirk dosent write songs,he writes riffs, hetfeild writes all the lyrics

Paranoidd 10-17-2004 03:54 PM

You realize a song consists of more than lyrics, right?

PoliticallyIncorrectMetalhead 10-17-2004 04:02 PM

Hahaha. Anyway I havent been in this thread that long and I was wondering if Metallica was making a new album anytime soon.

steven soriano 10-17-2004 11:01 PM

......im so happy someone made this this thread!

Metallica stopped being metal years and years ago, they doesn't mean they suck or anything, I'm just saying, calling Metallica a "metal" band is no longer true.

Riva 10-17-2004 11:39 PM

What are they then?

Paranoidd 10-18-2004 12:11 AM
Metallica stopped being metal years and years ago, they doesn't mean they suck or anything, I'm just saying, calling Metallica a "metal" band is no longer true.
Yes it is.

Riva 10-18-2004 12:15 AM

Exactly. I hear people who call them country rock because they have heard "Mama Said" and "Low Man's Lyric" played on the radio. Even if they do have some country sounding songs on their latest albums, songs like "The Unforgiven II", "Outlaw Torn" and "Until It Sleeps" prove that they are still a metal band, despite the fact they are no longer Thrash.

Paranoidd 10-18-2004 12:27 AM

Well you know how I feel about genres and arguing about them, but facts are facts.

I find most of the people who say "OMG Metallica aren't metal!" are metal elitist idiots who simply say that because they feel like Metallica is tainting their precious genre just because they've been progressively getting worse as a band. Or, they could be some pseudo-intellectual idiot who wants to argue something subjective and stupid like "Metallica is pop."

They aren't hard rock, they aren't pop, they're metal, period. St. Anger was in fact their hardest album in a while, it just sucked.

CreepingBlack 10-18-2004 12:53 AM
James is a very, very solid rythym player, and he writes alot.

Kirk is a decent lead guitarist, but really has to be kicked in the arse to write something decent (this is well documented).

Given the choice, I'd take Hetfield > Hammet in my band any day of the week.
of course. Hetfield wrote everything great metallica has ever done(pretty much). Except for the early Mustaine songs. Hammett is good, but could be replaced easily.

St. Anger is metallica's heaviest album in 16 years. Well, i don't think it sucks, but its definitely no AJFA.

holy $hit yes. Fade to black has two amazing solos and amazing chord riffs, as does Ride the Lightning, Trapped Under Ice, Fight Fire with Fire, and Call of Ktulu. but dont forget hetfield, he's an amazing guitarist too
Call of Ktulu had Dave Mustaine on guitar

Let's hope they learned their lesson. Metallica is still a salvageble band.

James needs to start drinking again, Lars needs to expand his kit and take some drumming lessons, Trujillo I can't say anything because the poor guy hasn't even had a chance to write anything yet, and Hammett needs to go back to Satch for a refresher course on soloing, right after he gets Lennox Lewis to teach him how to punch Lars in the face whenever he becomes too controlling. No solos my arse."

I've heard somewhere in this thread that Metallica and Slayer are both recording new albums in Jan 2005 (NO not together). I can't ****ing wait and as i said before, anything closer to their roots the St.Anger and i'll be stoked

Riva 10-18-2004 02:32 AM

Yes, Lars needs to stop being a ***** and start practising his double bass.

Nice.

I think Trujillo could get some more credit if you could actually hear his bass rather than being drowned out by too trebly scooped midded guitars (does that make sense?)

chuckles the silly piggy 10-18-2004 11:39 AM

On live shows you can hear his bass clearly, you could't hear it on St Anger cos bob rock was playing

Blanka Flip 10-18-2004 01:15 PM

Lars can play the double fine... Demonstrated on the song St. Anger and the tour they are on now... But for christs sake... I hope they get back on track and not release an album under complete pressure... I think Rob will help out in the creative process, they obviously know to get back into solos after the lashing they got from st. anger, and with solos come naturally better music... I'll always love metallica, and i think we are do for a creative burst from the guys... James' lyrics on the anger were complete crap, and...bleh..Don't want to get started...But yeah, i think we are in for a treat.

It pissed me off when I heard that, Trujillo is a perfectly capable bassist.

killswitchlog 10-19-2004 11:02 PM

hey does anyone know what songs they don't play live? i heard My Friend of Misery they almost never play live and even so never play all of it. i'm almost certain they never play "Escape" anymore even though it is a good song.

Riva 10-20-2004 03:24 AM

Let's just hope the rest of the band punches Lars and Bob Rock everytime they mention the phrase, "Solos hurt the creative process".

iamtheking 10-20-2004 03:28 AM

the only song i liked off st anger was the unamed feeling.
