Was it that Coffee that had a bass camp at his house back in the UK?

fatbandit 10-28-2009 07:09 PM

Yeah, it was great fun! We did a couple of awesome jams for y'all, but the really good one got deleted by his computer :(

On a different note... My Schroeder cab was rattling, so I opened her up and lo and behold...

This is actually really impressive. I dig his tone too. Very consistent. Look at the way he sweeps too...it's strange. Fingers on the upstrokes, thumb on the downstroke.
That's very ****ing impressive.

Super tight technique, awesome sweeps. I haven't built my sweeping up very much, together with double thumbing it's equal on my least developed abilities list.

FunkMetalBass 10-28-2009 08:10 PM

God, I cannot get these harmonies down at practice. I don't know if it's because I can't hear myself or what, but I cannot hit some of these for the life of me. It doesn't help that I'm arpeggiating a Dmaj7 chord and I have to match an A an octave or two below the A that she is singing.

Seriously. He's very clean with his playing and it actually sounds much better than the guy who he is covering. Very very much impressed with it.

gaslight 10-28-2009 08:12 PM

It's pretty essential to be able to hear yourself when you're singing. How are you practising them at home?

Yeah, it's really well done.

Does he write anything of his own though?
It's pretty essential to be able to hear yourself when you're singing. How are you practising them at home?
I'm not. I'm actually not 100% sure it's an A, but I think it is. In any case, I cannot hear myself at practice when she is singing, so I have no idea what I'm singing. I don't think our voices mesh together very well in that regard. I'd love to have some sick intricate harmonies, but I don't see it as happening. I can sing lead, or I can not sing. Those sound like my only two viable alternatives.

She has a digitech vocal pedal, so once we get that up and running, I can just have her turn it on and off whenever she wants some sweet harmonies.

No idea. I didn't look through his stuff enough to find out.

In other news, those Dingwall Combustions should be at The Bass Place (about 30 min away from my house) soon, so as soon as I get word from them on when the shipment is supposed to arrive, I will DEFINITELY be checking them out.

The sound clips on the Dingwall website are absolutely amazing. If I play one and like it enough, I may just get rid of my basses and look into becoming a Dingwall-only player. I thought Spector had my heart, but with superb tone, even response, and the fanned frets (which I'm REALLY excited to try), Dingwall may have just stolen that away from them.

Singing harmonies is tough work. Takes a lot of practise unless you're someone with excellent natural pitch.

Without hearing myself, I can only guess what pitch I'm hitting within +/- 4 semitones. No way I can just tell.

Isn't that what foldback is for?

Bass_guy333 10-28-2009 09:11 PM
That's sick, dude.

BG, how ya been, bro?
Been good man yourself?
When you introduced yourself to him did you pronounce the underscore?
Yes. I emphasized it actually.

gaslight 10-28-2009 09:26 PM
Isn't that what foldback is for?
It's exactly what it's for.

If you can't hear it there's no point doing it, so you'd need to sort out some way to amplify your vocals at practise and most importantly practise them properly at home too.

FunkMetalBass 10-28-2009 11:18 PM
Isn't that what foldback is for?
Foldback? Oh, a monitor.

They don't help. I can't hear myself through them at all when the band is playing. I'm 6'1", so the sound gets muffled and drowned out well before it even comes close to my ears.

My vocalist on the other hand is only about 5 feet tall, so she can hear them loud and clear. On top of that, she gets to be a bit closer to FOH which makes a difference as well.

I really need to sit down and work on hitting those notes. Over and over and over until it's vocal muscle memory and I don't have to hear myself.

Been pretty well. Can't complain. School is in full swing and the band is picking up, so I can't complain at all. :)

Whatchu been up to?

Epidemechanical 10-29-2009 12:15 AM

I'm not sure there is ever a point where hearing yourself is no longer important.

Height really shouldn't effect the usefulness of foldbacks either. It's always a hassle on stage when you don't get your own monitor though, and most people aren't lucky enough to rehearse with that kind of equipment.

funkyhoney 10-29-2009 08:14 AM

So yeah, I'm pretty awesome.

Maybe I just need a more powerful power amp to run the monitors.

I'm building another bike. For polo!
I'm excited, next week I will hit the court and see how many bones I can break.

funkyhoney 10-29-2009 07:25 PM

For.... polo?

Bike polo?

... What a world we live in.

Efrim 10-30-2009 07:28 AM

It's a pretty crazy sport.

BenJammin 10-30-2009 07:32 AM

Yawn.

BenJammin 10-30-2009 08:25 AM

I had band practice on Wednesday and Thursday (H&S). Leaving in about 1.5 hours for another practice (different band) and then again right after that with H&S. And then again on Sunday with the other band.

My fingers hurt, lol.

Welcome to the life of an active musician.

Every practice, I soak my fingertips in rubbing alcohol (as opposed to urine, my old method...) for a few minutes during breaks. It builds up the callouses a bit faster and it also cleans them to take the sticky oils off of my fingers and help preserve the life of my strings.
