I've heard some Tool and still think Portnoy > Carey. I don't see how Portnoy 'lacks creativity'.

RideTheSpiral 05-31-2006 07:05 PM

portnoy is not technically all that amazing but he writes really creative stuff and one of the best live drummers ive ever seen

Inkstar 05-31-2006 07:25 PM

Exactly. He pushes himself to the limits physically and mentally. He didn't get violentely ill after the Roseland show because he was constantely doing insanely fast double bass, or because he was thrashing the kit...

...it was because he drank too many Red Bulls.

:P

Nah, seriously, it was because he's so creative in his music that even though the parts arn't 'fast', 'thrashy' or double bass...y, he still uses all 4 limbs to quite a large rate due to the size of his kit. The only reason his kits are so large is because he doesn't want to limit himself. He wants as many options open to himself as possible, rather than adding in drum-dubbing.

The parts he writes are just awesome - especially his older stuff. Very creative.

That's completely opposite to what most people argue about him though :x
Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, O.S.I. - Good talent, lack of creativity hurts him.
Ok, he doesn't say anything about technicality, but I swear in an older round (Maybe the first round Portnoy appeared in), something about his technicality and lack-of-creation.

I agree with you though, I find Portnoy extremely creative, he just knows when to use what, no matter how subtle it is, it just works.

eug008 05-31-2006 11:38 PM

Portnoy's one of the most creative drummers i know IMO

ghettoeddo 06-01-2006 01:16 AM

i totally agree. when i read pinkfreud's description, i was hurt. i don't think he's heard all that portnoy can do.

i know the poll isn't based all on chops and writing ability, but also on influence and things like that...but portnoy should still do extremely well imo.

to me, he is the epitome of the drumming world right now. i realize people like moon, bonham and peart are much more influential and thus "great," but give portnoy some time...and i think he'll be just as much a legend as them :smoke:

eug008 06-01-2006 04:31 AM

Carey will win the poll (probably) but

Portnoy>Carey

Dance Of Eternity, Erotomania etc..

I think it was something like "just plays technical beats as fast as possible and lacks any creativity"

I think people just think of him as a machine because he's in Dream Theater.

Inkstar 06-01-2006 05:57 AM

Pollstarter has nfi what he's talking about.

Chu 06-01-2006 05:58 AM

Sif Portnoy ever plays as fast as he can... He is a machine...

nowitzki 06-01-2006 06:00 AM

Portnoy is the youngest ever drummer to make the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame.

I don't think anyone is arguing with the fact he's awesome, but obviously when you get to the top 10 its hard to seperate people.

Lord Abortion 06-01-2006 08:00 AM
Pollstarter has nfi what he's talking about.
I totally agree, to be honest. He's very biased towards Classic rock drummers. But that's his particular love, I'm sure if I ran the poll, I would be biased towards drummers from bands I love.

Jev 06-01-2006 08:05 AM

You'd make sure Portnoy would win.

GenuineImitation 06-01-2006 08:09 AM

You say it like its a bad thing.

Lord Abortion 06-01-2006 08:23 AM

I would though:p

NP-Rush-Subdivisions

red barchetta 06-01-2006 08:33 AM

Peart ftw. i'm sorry, but i had to vote for him ahead of Portnoy.

TREASON!

Peart is a good drummer though.

Firecracker 06-01-2006 10:37 AM

I couldn't really say who was better: Peart or Portnoy
I personally prefer DT over Rush, but that's not really a liable reason.

ghettoeddo 06-01-2006 10:53 AM
TREASON!

Peart is a good drummer though.
that's another thing.

peart is sposed to be so much better than portnoy, but i think it's safe to say that portnoy is much more musically capable and technically capable as well.
the only thing peart has is that...portnoy's drumming derives mainly from peart's.

i love rush and tool but dream theater still takes the cake for me.

someone said that people assume portnoy is a machine because he's in dream theater. i think that's a good point, but it's a completely false assumption to make. sure, they can be at times, but i'd say the majority of their writing flows very well

eug008 06-01-2006 04:39 PM

Yup Dream Theater is the prog band I listen to most

GenuineImitation 06-01-2006 04:54 PM
Yup Dream Theater is the prog band I listen to most
Same here, although I listen to alot of Rush, Spiral Architect, Opeth, King Crimson and Pain of Salvation as well.

eug008 06-02-2006 12:03 AM

I can't really listen to rush or any other 70's prog because of the vocals, but I like the instrumentals etc...

Jev 06-02-2006 06:02 AM

I just don't like Rush that much. Good band but I'm just not really interested.

Chu 06-02-2006 08:07 AM

GenuineImitation 06-02-2006 04:52 PM

That sounds really cool. Two of my top favorite guitarists on one album sounds amazing.

temporary 06-02-2006 09:08 PM

Dear god, Marty Freidmen, John Petrucci, and Steve Vai will be on a record together, and soon Mike Portnoy, Micheal Akerfeldt, and Steve Wilson will be making one together. Sweet.
