Pink Floyd is THE prog band.

BlindWriting 07-06-2005 12:49 PM
does anybody know any bands that are like tool?
thnx for any comments
Be sure to check out:
A Perfect Circle
Porcupine Tree
Dredg
King Crimson
Opeth
Chevelle
Radiohead

I think most of these were mentioned above already.

Huber 07-06-2005 12:49 PM

I'd say Pink Floyd has to many Psychadelic things going on to be considered the prog band.

Not really... they're first album was psychadelic, but once they lost Syd it wans't like that anymore. Animals, Meddle, Wish You Were Here, The Wall, none of those were psychadelic albums. DSotM is debatable.

Touché

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-06-2005 01:01 PM

So Ben, have you spliced the Ænema solo into Rob's track yet?

clearvision 07-06-2005 01:26 PM

???

I did it when you posted it, though my vocal track was there too...

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-06-2005 01:28 PM

Oh ok. Heh, sorry, I never got around to DLing it. :-/ I'll do it now though.
I'd say Pink Floyd has to many Psychadelic things going on to be considered the prog band.
Wtf are you talking about? Psychedelic ambience is still ambience... a large element of progressive music.

Thanks man, I searched long and hard for the best Danny pic I could find. Google was my friend. The full pic has this beam of light just illuminating Danny and his kit and everything else is in shadow... so cool.

Dr. Jake... Any chance of getting a bass track in there? Especially for the guitar silences in the breakdown part. Just a thought... I haven't tried playing to the current track so it might be fine.

Then there is Chevelle, they are alot simpler than tool. Their singer reminds me of maynard slightly...
I saw them live at Milwaukee's Summerfest a couple days ago, and they were halfway decent. The singer really tries for that Maynard sound with a little whining on the soft parts and some crunch on the screaming parts.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-06-2005 01:40 PM

Well, just try playing along with it, and if you fall out of time in those spots, just go along with the original. :thumb: When do you think you'll have them done?

Huber 07-06-2005 01:43 PM
Wtf are you talking about? Psychedelic ambience is still ambience... a large element of progressive music.
The way people talk about it on these forums, it's like a genre of music. I meant it was not pure prog enough to be considered the prog band.

But then I was educated by Otherside.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-06-2005 01:49 PM

But Chris directed it at me in the first place! :upset:

prog has nothing to do with the actual sound or tone of a band. It is all about the song structure and complexity. You can have prog metal, prog jazz, prog anything. And saying that Pink Floyd isn't the definitive prog band because they are also a psychadelic band is inaccurate. Either way, there is no definitive prog band, and there never will be. Music is defined by the listeners ear, not by a single band.

Oh, and don't double post, Sliptallica. :thumb:

Moses 07-06-2005 01:51 PM

****, listening to my vocal track now really makes me sad..... :upset:

It sounds really bad to me now, I swear it sounded better when I first did it.

Yeah, I took care of it. I have to keep hiding this window because I'm at school.

Ok I'm definetely tired of not being involved in this thread anymore. Update me if possible someone.

Sorry, didn't mean(sp?) to do that :upset: you're voice isn't that bad, but its not ment for singin maynard songs, when i first heard it i thought that it fitted more in something like a punk, hardcore or metal band. Sorry again for making you feel bad :upset:

Go for it, someone already spliced and uploaded it a while back though.

TerryThorne 07-06-2005 06:17 PM

is that upload still up?

I seriously doubt it. I think it was about 50-70 pages back.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-06-2005 07:50 PM

Thorne- Are you talking about Aiden's sequence, or the cheesy ripoff one?

By all means, please talk about anything related to Tool. :thumb:

The cheesy rip-off being the not so holy gift thing that was posted a while back right?

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-06-2005 08:17 PM

Yessir. The one that seperated D/R/T. I actaully had hope in it up until that point. :p

You guys are talking about the Holy Gift right? well I can agree with you on the D/R/T seperation. However, The Lateralus Code (talked about here a while back) has it's moments and keeps L/D/R/T together. Just thought I'd mention it.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-06-2005 09:02 PM

The Lateralus code is the one that is spliced and such, right? Or are you talking about another alternate track listing?

dUSK 07-06-2005 09:07 PM

Yep, thats what I'm talking about. I went ahead and did it a while back, and here's how the final product looked on a screen. I must say that the intro turned out to be very cool.

So how did it sound?

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-06-2005 09:21 PM

I'd ask you to YSI the final product, Greg, but we're both on Dialup.

dUSK 07-06-2005 09:26 PM
So how did it sound?
It was ok I guess. I didn't have high expectations of it to begin with. A lot of it (particularly the second half) was just the songs playing through. The transitions between songs were ok, but not anything to get overly excited about. Don't expect and Pink Floyd type transitions. The layering of songs was the most impressive aspect of it all, especially the intro to The Patient with EBA and Mantra. Really it's just a different take on the album, and it's worth giving a listen just for a change.

Apparently similiar stuff can be done with Ænima, but I'm yet to try that.

EDIT: I will upload you The Patient from it in two weeks when I'm back at uni. If after that the final product is requested, it shall be delivered.

No, I thought the famous Holy Gift did actually separate them.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-06-2005 09:34 PM

Greg- Hopefully by the time you're back at uni, I'll be on DSL or something. Oh, and btw, my msn booted me off, so I didn't just take off on you. :)

About the Aenima deal..It only changes like 3 of the songs, doesn't it?

Haha, no big deal, I left anyway, the downloading of Cog live was making lag.

And I haven't looked at the Ænimea deal at all. I'm thinking I might play around with it tonight if I end up staying home.
