Wright wrote Us and Them, along with Waters. Wright wrote some of the best songs by Floyd.

Mhm, but I think Wright didn't write that one ... but I could be wrong
 Am I the only one who found that amusing?

Us and Them is definitely an amazing song, probably the best on DSOTM.

I'm listening to Gilmour's solo stuff right now. It's pretty good, but not amazing.

Dragon_Prince 11-06-2005 09:37 AM

yeah I know wasn't sure ;)

Jude 11-06-2005 09:37 AM
Nah, not at all. Interstellar Overdrive is an amazing song. It was improvised in studios as well, and it's crazy how well the improvised work went together. The way they recorded it was to play the main riff, which is the backbone of the song, then do improvise. They recorded 3 versions and picked their favorite. They never played it live the same way twice.

I wouldn't say that Syd's Floyd was better than later stuff, but it is definitly great! PATGOD is the best psychedelia album of all time.

I really don't like ASOS all that much. For my opinion see my review on spuntik, but it's mainly a transitional album, and hard to listen to and enjoy to me. The Wall has lots of filler because it's a concept album btw. :)

And yea, Us & Them is definitly one of, or the best Pink Floyd song ever. I love it. Best off DSOTM for sure.
Ehh, I know it was improvised but it still just sounds like 9 minutes of wankage to me. And The Wall has no excuse for all that filler...it practically could have been a one-LP album and probably would have been a lot better.

I like Time more than Us and Them, although mainly because I identify with the lyrics more.

Anyone else like Childhood's End more than Time?

magicbus 11-06-2005 11:16 AM

I love Time, and it's probably one of my favorite Floyd songs. It's so cool how the solo comes in only after one verse, and what a solo it is!

And yea, Wright is awesome. He keyboard work was great, and a lot of his songs were pretty cool. I think he's really underrated.

Broken Arrow 11-06-2005 11:36 AM

Childhood's end is great, but I don't know. Time is one of Floyd's best songs. I'd say Time.

Spinal Pap 11-06-2005 11:44 AM
Ehh, I know it was improvised but it still just sounds like 9 minutes of wankage to me.
I know what you mean. It took me a while to really like the parts with all the beeps and other odd sounds. Same way with Atom Heart Mother. I love both of them now though.

Yeah Time is awesome, has one of Floyd's best solos.

bacchusy 11-06-2005 11:49 AM

i think time has floyd's BEST solo.

the solos from Money and Comfortably Numb are genious but time's solo is just perfect - in my opinion the best solo ever

bacchusy 11-06-2005 11:51 AM

by the way, what do you think about "With Piper at the Gates of Down"?
I want to buy a new album, I already have The Wall, Animals, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and A Momentary Lapse of Reason. I'm not sure ... which album I should buy next ... I've heard, WPATGOD is quite different from the other floyd-albums

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 11-06-2005 11:52 AM

"SOYCD" is way better IMO. Oh and.....

"Maggot Brain" > Any solo

PATGOD is way different from other Floyd but is their very best IMO. I'd get PATGOD or Meddle.

Deconstruction 11-06-2005 11:53 AM

I just picked up Momentary lapse of reason. I havent had a chance to listen to it yet but I think it will be good.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 11-06-2005 12:04 PM

Get ready to be disappointed......

DeusExMachina 11-06-2005 12:05 PM

Well, it's much more 80's. One of the weaker Floyd releases, but still very good.

Edit: Schyma's just bitter because there aren't weird acid-induced ambient breakdowns. :p

Spinal Pap 11-06-2005 12:16 PM
PATGOD is way different from other Floyd but is their very best IMO. I'd get PATGOD or Meddle.
I'd get both. :thumb:

But really, I would go with Meddle first. Only get PATGOD if you want something completely different and new.
Get ready to be disappointed......
Yeah...you would probably have been better off to just download Sorrow and Terminal Frost. The rest is pretty bad IMO.

Deconstruction 11-06-2005 12:16 PM

Well I bought it used so it shouldnt be too much of a letdown even if it wasnt very good. What are some of the more obscure albums I should pick up by them. I have a good set right now. I have, DSOTM,AHM,The Wall, SFOS,Animals,OBC,MLOR,WYWH, I think I have PATGOD but I cant remeber and dont feel like digging through my albums.

Whale and Wasp 11-06-2005 12:16 PM

well if you dont compare it to the earlier stuff, AMLOR is a great album IMO

bacchusy 11-06-2005 12:26 PM

thanks to Shyma and Spinal Pap, i'm going to buy meddle

I like On The Turning Away and Learning To Fly ... and the opener Sings of Life is also quite good ... but I just hate this "A new machine" things.

Spinal Pap 11-06-2005 12:36 PM

On The Turning Away and Learning To Fly are pretty good songs. I suppose AMLOR isn't that bad of an album but it doesn't compare with most of Floyd's other work.

DeusExMachina 11-06-2005 12:48 PM

Anyone interested in post-Waters Floyd (or Floyd at all, for that matter) would do very well to pick up The Division Bell.

standard 11-06-2005 12:48 PM
Wright wrote Us and Them, along with Waters. Wright wrote some of the best songs by Floyd.
Waters' name is on like every Floyd song ever. Wright wrote the lyrics for Us and Them to be used in a song for a movie, but it was turned down. So they were looking through old stuff, and found it, and worked with it.

I doubt Waters wrote as much music as he gets credit, considering Gilmour had to tune his bass for him. (Until they got the digital tuners)

Deconstruction 11-06-2005 12:49 PM

I think I am going to be in a band greatly influenced by Pink Floyd.

magicbus 11-06-2005 12:53 PM

Actually Wright wrote the piano part for "Zabriskie Point" (sp?), and then they later dug it out for "Us & Them". I'm pretty sure Waters wrote the lyrics, and that's why he got credit for the song also.

Well by The Wall time period, Waters was basically just interested in writing and singing. Gilmour played bass on a lot The Wall and on live tours Roger hired someone to play bass so he could focus more on singing and putting on a show.

Agreed. I love Marooned and High Hopes.

I disagree. IMO, the Devision Bell was the worst Floyd album ever. It's all pretty much relaxation music, nothing like what Floyd is supposed to be. The only good thing about is how far David Gilmour can bend those strings.

randomthought9 11-06-2005 01:13 PM

I actually like the Division Bell. It's my favorite post-Waters album. I like to relax to PF. They can write 20 minute long songs, and I'll be left wanting more.

standard 11-06-2005 01:14 PM

It is a good album musically. I personally love Gilmours lyrics, but a lot of people disagree. I think Gilmour and them did a FINE job on the albums without Waters.

We'll see if we could work something out. ;)

Romencer17 11-06-2005 01:18 PM

Well, I liked AMLOR more than The Division Bell. the Division Bell had some nice solos, and the last song was nice, but I seriously didn't like it at all. Oh, and the booklet hand some nice trippy pictures in it.

Romencer17 11-06-2005 01:21 PM

Sometimes I think, that it was lucky that a few druggies from the 60's became so famous.
