I can play most of Achilles, but then Bonham has this crazy beat towards the end. I'm still having trouble figuring out what is even going on there.

jpj 10-22-2004 10:13 PM

Better than The Lemon Song and Achilles? Better than Achilles yes. > or = to The Lemon Song.

lunch998 10-22-2004 10:14 PM
I imagine it would be. Although if I may say so
me on the ocean > bonham on the ocean. :p
Bonham on the HTWWW Ocean is much better than the original studio version.

= to perhaps, I suppose.

lunch998 10-22-2004 10:16 PM

How Many More Times is great, what an underrated song. But they don't compare in epicness to Achilles. Thats what separates it apart from most of thier other songs.( I do generally prefer the earlier stuff to their later material)

Yes quite, I should watch that again soon. Bonham's later drumming is often to much "cleaner" shall we say, it seems much more spread out and empty(not to say it's bad just the best way I know to describe it). But in concerts he can do a good job of putting the kick back into it.

Ya, achilles is quite the epic.

For some reason thats the part of it that strikes a nerve with me. I guess not everyone feels that way about it. But as far as the early Zeppelin, How Many More Times and Good Times Bad Times are some of the best. When I first heard those triplets in GTBT I was amazed.

jpj 10-22-2004 10:20 PM

Achilles is definitly a very epic song, but there are many other songs I'd prefer to listen to.

Ya, everybody loves the triplets, i think it's the most recognized drumming part of that song. But if you listen to it it's actually all around a very good drumming song (as well as just song).

jpj 10-22-2004 10:22 PM

I am not a drummer so don't have a ****ing clue what you're talking about. This thread needs another bassist. We could talk about the really cool bass fills on GTBT.

The beat without them is still cool. Theres a real kickass part in the fade-out that most people probably don't hear. It's around 2:40 and it's not even that great, but Bonham plays it so it sounds so cool.

nothing ever needs another bassist ;). Just kidding.

Ya, it's not just your regular beat which I love. Speaking of fade outs I love baker in Whiteroom, especially the fade out, but I love his bass drum sound throughout it sounds like a floor tom or something the way it's done.

Yea those are cool. I really like the bass riff during the guitar solo in Dazed and Confused.

jpj 10-22-2004 10:26 PM

I can play that :) :thumb: It's really fun to play.

Here I'll tell a drummer joke to make up for it.

How do you know when a drummers at your door?

He doesn't knock on time and never knows when to come in.

Wow man, that is one of my favorite jams to end a song ever. I love that double kick at around 4:30, I wish that jam went on for another minute or so.

jpj 10-22-2004 10:27 PM

 I like it :thumb:

RockAndRoll 10-22-2004 10:27 PM

I love the drum part in the outro of the solo, I just love it so much. It's a fun song to play in general. Edit: Talking about Dazed and Confused.

ToRidTheDisease 10-22-2004 10:29 PM

im going to misfits and cooper

lunch998 10-22-2004 10:29 PM

Speaking White Room, Tales of Brave Ulysses is very similar. The bass drum doesn't sound as cool, but it's still very good. Plus Jack Bruce's bass line at the end of that song is one of my favorite bass parts ever.

I know, That song was just so wonderfully written.

Yea, if your talking about the when Page is playing the guitar chords, and then Bonham goes around on the toms, that is one of my favorite parts to play.

The lyrics are amazing as well. Hmmm, Ulysses, Achilles, what's classic rock and the greeks?

lunch998 10-22-2004 10:31 PM

A great Bonham drumming song is I Can't Quit You Babe, the soundcheck at Royal Albert Hall version. It's got the classic Bonham bass drum amazing speed, and at the end you get his cool little "Rock and Roll" ending.

jpj 10-22-2004 10:31 PM

I like the drums in Rock and Roll, but I'm uneducated drum-wise.

I don't know, but those happen to be two of my favorite songs ever.

That part and right before he plays on the toms he changes his pattern for 8 bars, I think it's 8. I loooooooove that drum part, so simple yet so effective.

I really need to watch the dvd again.

lunch998 10-22-2004 10:34 PM

Rockandroll, do you own the newer Zeppelin Dvd? If you do my favorite drumming parts on it (aside from Moby Dick) come from the radio promotion show in black in white, it's one of the extras. Bonham is playing a 4-piece but he still manages to get his awesome sound and power. (The part in Dazed and Confused we were just talking about is especially cool there.)

jpj 10-22-2004 10:35 PM

Man, if only I would have stayed with drums I'd have something to say in this conversation.

I do own it indeed. I love those black and white ones in general, they're well done visually and musically.

You gave up drums for bass? Tsk Tsk. Anyways I gave you my favorite bass part (Tales of Brave Ulysses fade-out) and you didn't respond. I tried to include you.

jpj 10-22-2004 10:37 PM

I've never heard the song :upset:

Haha, at least we're not talk about how I started doing some drumline moves while doing my hand and foot polyrhythms.
