Gotta let me know how that is. Mastadon is growing on me, and Brendon Small is extremely funny to watch when he goes all out DethKlok.

:amaze: 10-21-2009 01:32 PM

I've never been a huge metal fan, but I've got a couple a mastodon albums and i enjoy metalocalypse ... plus i'm going with a decent group of people. should be a damn good time.

:amaze: 10-21-2009 01:33 PM

FunkMetalBass 10-21-2009 02:04 PM

Anybody know how to get that sexy fretless tone that Marcus Miller, Wooten, and every other fretless playing in the world has achieved? Is the trick to use rounds instead of flats?

Now apologize!

I have a mild foot fetish.

You don't want me anywhere near your feet....

....or peanut butter.

Trust me.

Spaceman Spiff 10-21-2009 04:03 PM

Separately or together?

I was about to give my feet a peanut butter bath.
I've heard that you can get a cleaner, more controlled sound if you compress mildly twice in series instead of a lot of compression just once.

It'll be for both the studio and for live applications. When I actually sit down in the studio, I have fairly consistent output levels because I don't play as heavy. Also, the recording guy works with his own compression in the recordings, so I don't want to step on his toes too much - just a little bit of compression to clean it up.
This is what I like to call nonsense lol. Compressing just evens out your dynamics, you only really need to it once; and do it right. Using two compressors just introduces more noise into your system than you need to.

Gaslight: I've heard a lot of jazz players are pretty suspicious of engineers in the studio :p Usually if they're a good engineer they wont compress the snot out of it, just even the sound out and let the natural dynamics come through. But this totally depends on the skill of the player and partly the genre you're mixing.

P.s. there are ways around using multiple mics and blending DI'd signals in, it can just get finnicky.

I accidentally bought heavy gauge strings. Fail.

heavy guage sucks i'm sorry ryan

Sablate McNuff 10-22-2009 10:30 PM

I love heavy gauges. A bit of sacrifice in the tone department, but they just feel so much better.

gaslight 10-22-2009 10:32 PM

How heavy a gauge are we talking Funky?

funkyhoney 10-22-2009 10:37 PM
How heavy a gauge are we talking Funky?
50-110

I usually use medium, it's not that big of a jump but it was still a stupid mistake.

Sablate McNuff 10-22-2009 10:37 PM

.145 B-strings rule.

That's the perfect gauge. Use it. Love it.

If I remember correctly my "usual" set is 50-70-85-105, last I used were a bit too light, some Flea signatures I thought I'd try.

Moon Flavor 10-22-2009 10:43 PM

light guage prosteels are what make my taco moist

Steel strings have a great pick tone, but I just find them too aggressive and bright - every little click chimes through x 10000000

funkyhoney 10-22-2009 10:45 PM

Yeah I'm a bit over D'addario. They used to be the only strings I would use.

I usually get DR now, a bit more expensive but they're worth it imo.

Nickel > j00.

gaslight 10-22-2009 10:46 PM

I've got 45 to 105 on my fours, one set DR Hi Beams one set Kerly flats, 32 to 130 Elixirs on my six (that's what it comes with).

funkyhoney 10-22-2009 10:50 PM

Not only did I not get regular gauge DR hi beams, I got Lo riders. I'm a tool sometimes.

What's the difference between the hi beams and the lo riders?

funkyhoney 10-22-2009 10:55 PM

Lo Riders aren't as bright, as I understand it.

gaslight 10-22-2009 11:02 PM

If I remember what edgebass said correctly, Lo Riders are stiffer and brighter still than Hi Beams because they're built on a hex-core.

They were the DRs I wanted to try originally, I'd still like to give them a go one day.

Gotten a lot of play out of my Hi Beams so far, they sound really nice broken in and have held up well to a lot of playing.

I'd like to try the Fat Beams too.

funkyhoney 10-22-2009 11:03 PM

That makes no sense labelling them Lo Riders if they're brighter than something as ostentatious as "Hi Beam".
