Piper at the Gates of Dawn still remains my favorite Floyd album to date.

Floyd + Syd > Floyd - Syd

IMO

Kingofdudes 11-05-2005 09:14 AM

Save for 2 songs (Astronomy Domine and Interstellar Overdrive) PATGOD is really only good for chill music.

I recommend the David Gilmour self titled album to anyone in here. It is a whole lot better than About Face.

Ehh, I'm not so all about Syd's stuff. I think he's overrated. PATGOD is mediocre and a lot of it is too bizarre to really be listenable. Take Interstellar Overdrive, for example...one cool riff and a bunch of unlistenable noise and wankage.

The quality of the band really went up fairly steadily starting with ASOS and peaked around DSOTM/WYWH. Animals was still awesome, too, but it was their last great album. The Wall is overrated and very mediocre...some incredible songs and lots of filler.

robo2448 11-05-2005 09:52 AM

Lucifer Sam is my favorite song on PATGOD. Syd's awesome but I prefer Floyd with Gilmour and Waters.

I got Gilmour's s/t a while ago but it never really grabbed my attention. Some of the guitar playing was great but without Water's songwriting the album just isn't very consistent. I've only listened to it like once though, and it was a few months ago so I should be giving it another listen.

To tell you the truth I find it funny that you find Syd overrated when you guys overrate Gilmour extremly. I love his style but honestly he isn't that great of a guitarist.

Maybe it sounds like "wankage" to you but to me this is a masterpeice. I find it quite ironic that you don't consider "Saucerful of Secrets" unlistenable yet "Intersteller Overdrive" is.

The whole PATGOD album is fantastic except for "Take Up Thy.." which was Roger's first song.

 Now there are two of you.

In all honesty, I really do enjoy PATGOD. It's certainly better than all of the pre-DSOTM albums except maybe Meddle and AHM, but I do prefer the later stuff.

thunderzstruck 11-05-2005 11:07 AM

Wow... Us and Them is an AWESOME song

i cant decide on one album but PATGOD and meddle are the best floyd albums ever......

standard 11-05-2005 12:41 PM

I'm with Jude. I don't like Syd time period stuff. It's just too weird. I like a couple songs, but it's just strange noises.

Maybe if I smoked weed or did acid, but I don't..

MBS 11-05-2005 01:05 PM
Take a Crybaby and plug it in backwards (the guitar plug going into the amp jack, etc). You'll get a sound very similar to the "whales having intercourse" part of "Echoes". Only trouble is that it's been so long since I did this, that I'm not entirely sure if that's how I actually did it. All I know is that I did something to my wah pedal and got the "whales having intercourse" effect.
Yeah, I've tried that. It only makes one pitch, though. If you listen to "Echoes", Gilmour's pedal makes many different pitches, so the whole pedal needs to be rewired in order to accurately reproduce the sounds made.

Sebek 11-05-2005 02:07 PM

Breathe is probably my favorite non Syd song though.

Maybe it's just me then, I just prefer the Syd era. The weirdness of it kind of seems like that's what Pink Floyd should be. When I listen to albums outside of that time now it sounds like a different band in a way.

Britton 11-05-2005 02:16 PM

It's a much different band.

standard 11-05-2005 02:16 PM

I thought that once.. But then again, which era lasted longer?

The non-Syd is how Pink Floyd was.. Even though it .. should have, or should not have been?

Although it was mean how they got rid of Syd, there was no other choice, but they could have done it more polite.

Britton 11-05-2005 02:17 PM

They were really tough on him. He just couldn't take it

I don't know, I hear lots of praise for Syd. He's OK, but too weird for my taste. And SOS (the song) is pretty wanky too...in fact I find a lot of early Floyd that way, including Atom Heart Mother. But for the most part I think they improved after Syd. Of course, most bands improve over time, so if Syd had stayed sane, it's not to say he wouldn't have gotten better too.

Spinal Pap 11-05-2005 04:26 PM
But for the most part I think they improved after Syd. Of course, most bands improve over time, so if Syd had stayed sane, it's not to say he wouldn't have gotten better too.
It's hard to say whether or not they improved with Syd's departure considering the drastic change in sound they made. I like Waters era Floyd a lot more so I consider it an improvement, but from a psychadelic standpoint, they went downhill.
Wow... Us and Them is an AWESOME song
That's the song that got me into Floyd. I love the lyrics. Great sax too.

rockinbass17 11-05-2005 11:10 PM

They're both just so different, it's hard to compare. I have no idea who I prefer, Syd or Roger, because sometimes I'm in a mood for obscure phychadelic stuff, but other times I'm in the mood for spacey, artsy music. From a technical perspective, Waters was much more musical than Syd. But Syd's songs are somtimes more fun to listen to.

POLISH SAUSAGE 11-05-2005 11:11 PM

i prefer syd. his songs were so out there and trippy, that i just cant get enough of.

PinkFloyd 11-05-2005 11:21 PM

Us and them = Best Floyd Song.

Hands down.

It's over.

No if ands or buts.

It just is.

Funny that such a random person in the band wrote that too huh?

I'm listening to Shine On right now, and I wish I had all my gear I'm saving for.. My GT-8 and a steel guitar. :P

Well kinda. It was usually Waters and Gilmour, not Wright!

Mhm, but I think Wright didn't write that one ... but I could be wrong

personally I think Wright is the most talented of the members, look how he wrote The Great Gig In The Sky, well that is just perfectly done, how everything works together so well, and if he wrote Us And Them I think he's even better, and Summer 68 is also a very nice song :)

Riva 11-06-2005 04:21 AM

Wright wrote Us and Them, along with Waters. Wright wrote some of the best songs by Floyd.

Have you heard his solo album? Or anyone else? If someone has it can he/she write a review, I think his solo work will be good

Nah, not at all. Interstellar Overdrive is an amazing song. It was improvised in studios as well, and it's crazy how well the improvised work went together. The way they recorded it was to play the main riff, which is the backbone of the song, then do improvise. They recorded 3 versions and picked their favorite. They never played it live the same way twice.

I wouldn't say that Syd's Floyd was better than later stuff, but it is definitly great! PATGOD is the best psychedelia album of all time.

I really don't like ASOS all that much. For my opinion see my review on spuntik, but it's mainly a transitional album, and hard to listen to and enjoy to me. The Wall has lots of filler because it's a concept album btw. :)

And yea, Us & Them is definitly one of, or the best Pink Floyd song ever. I love it. Best off DSOTM for sure.
