The Bible is good in the sense that if you read it without pretense, it does teach a lot of good truths, mostly through the teaching of Christ etc blah blah nonsense.

But I don't think it should confirm ones belief in God alone.
this but you can also find god
I was kind of meaning that as well, through experiences in life

McP3000 02-02-2009 11:55 PM

expand on the second sentence because that could be interpreted more than one way

RiceMonster 02-02-2009 11:55 PM

The purpose of the bible is to learn moral lessons from it's stories. Even priests will tell you that.

I'm not religious though.

I feel as though a lot of Christians claim their belief in God solely through the Bible and its claims as opposed to finding God themselves.
Iluvatar speaking truths itt
Well I speaking as a God myself, I am well versed in these matters.

Dimmu Burger 02-02-2009 11:56 PM

My official position is:

Whatever floats your boat.

McP3000 02-02-2009 11:56 PM

oh i see john

i definitely found God through people not the Bible tbh

you cannot except Christ into your heart if you don't understand him. reading the bible is essential to any Christian.

More to the movie after the credits.

i think he was insinuating that you find God then read the bible vs. reading the bible and then find God
I feel as though a lot of Christians claim their belief in God solely through the Bible and its claims as opposed to finding God themselves.
The people I know that are really into it are quite the opposite. It's all about prayer and being close to God as opposed to studying the Bible all the time, though they do that as well.
i think he was insinuating that you find God then read the bible vs. reading the bible and then finding God
well it could be either depending on the situation
you cannot except Christ into your heart if you don't understand him. reading the bible is essential to any Christian.
the point was, you shouldn't believe in God because you read the bible.

Aaron 02-02-2009 11:58 PM

Depends on the person I guess. I've heard of people being athiests and reading the bible as a literary exercise, and after a time respecting it, then going and finding out more and eventually becoming christian.

Iluvatar 02-02-2009 11:58 PM
you cannot except Christ into your heart if you don't understand him. reading the bible is essential to any Christian.
Well I mean yes of course because that is the only way you will learn about Christ. I meant it shouldn't be based off of that solely.
The people I know that are really into it are quite the opposite. It's all about prayer and being close to God as opposed to studying the Bible all the time, though they do that as well.
I know a lot of people like this as well, but I see more and more young people who just follow their parents.

idk, thats like saying you want to do experiment sin astrophysics without taking the classes. The bible is the word of god to Christians everywhere, I really don't think you're much of a believer if you don't bother reading the instruction manuel js

adb 02-02-2009 11:59 PM

you shouldn't also believe just to avoid hell, and because your parents raised you that way

(people tend to do one or both)

I see your point, but the people who I know that are very close to God aren't the types to have memorized scripture. Sure they read it etc but it's more of a feeling of closeness with God than taking a class.

Iluvatar 02-03-2009 12:01 AM

I think everyone should give the Bible an unbiased read, simply because the messages it contains are also extremely humane and relatable to just living with your fellow man, not just religious meanings.

aka the Bible is worth more than just being "simply the word of God" (for lack of a better term), it has much more "practical" (same) applications to life as well.

id say the same for the Quran

but the Bible first because its slightly more relevant to western culture

AA-12 02-03-2009 12:02 AM

@john: ^same goes for all/most religious texts

As someone who grew up being Catholic, I'd say attending mass is more important than reading the bible. You learn a lot more.

Like I said though, I'm not Catholic anymore.

Iluvatar 02-03-2009 12:03 AM

I never ever connected with mass. Ever.

yeah, like infanticide, genocide, slavery, sexism, and murder. :p

Angmar 02-03-2009 12:04 AM

I kinda wanna read the Qur’an tbh.

AA-12 02-03-2009 12:05 AM

I suppose having a modicum of intelligence is also important when reading the Bible yes!

Edit. I also mostly meant New Testament as opposed to Old

Angmar 02-03-2009 12:05 AM

Really Josh?

AA-12 02-03-2009 12:06 AM

yeah, on both parts.

Sorry. The time I felt the closest to God was when I was 11, oddly enough. Yeah I went to a Christian school so I was surrounded with it all day, but even when I was home I was praying all the time. Every situation I was in I prayed about. It was like I talked to God every few minutes about everything and I felt that he heard me. I felt very close to him then. I haven't really been able to get back to that, but I try to talk to him as often as possible, even if I forget a lot. He hears me, as dumb as it sounds, I can tell.

adb 02-03-2009 12:06 AM

basically mcp, when I said I know the nature of religious discussion, its happening right now

We can have this is discussion which is actually intellectual (a rarity for R&M)

but it boils down to faith

You either have it or you don't
