Give me some faster, upbeat Van Halen songs (stuff like I'm The One, Atomic Punk, Light Up The Sky, Hot For Teacher, Panama, etc.,)
This is very broad but if i could only buy one album, ONE, what would it be? i'm probably going to have most of the ones mentioned though. what should i buy from the last, say, 15 years then.
Guns n Roses Appetite for Destruction. Period.

I was thinking about buying an Eric Clapton DVD, but I can´t decide between Crossroads and Sessions for Robert Johnson (is that right?), can anyone help me with my decision? Which one do you think is better?

that depends as well. haha. crossroads is awesome, plenty of good electric blues, as well as some other genres thrown around in there. you get your virtuoso fill with vai and mclaughlin but you get clapton, buddy guy, hubert sumlin and many other blues greats. that would be my choice. but i already have it. so it would be repetitive...

The Wildhearts - Earth vs The Wildhearts

Dark_Horse_335 03-01-2005 12:32 PM

Hmm, the Wildhearts. Never heard of 'em. I'll have to check 'em out :thumb:

Bartender 03-01-2005 12:48 PM

If you're looking for metal, they won't be what you're looking for, but your question was very vague..

It's just more or less my favourite album is all, so it seemed like the most natural one to respond with.

Why do you ask, though?

3rdplanet 03-01-2005 12:51 PM

Been listening to Be by Pain of Salvation all day today and I love the piano in it.

Does anybody have any recommendations for similar stuff?

MAthiAS 03-01-2005 12:51 PM

What kind of band are the Wildhearts?

Invicta_Veritas 03-01-2005 01:52 PM

I need various recommendations based on some of the things I have right now, which are:

Nile-In Their Darkened Shrines
Vehemence-God Was Created
Kataklysm-Shadows and Dust
Dimmu Borgir-Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia
The Black Dahlia Murder- Unhallowed
Dillinger Escape Plan-Miss Machine
In Flames-Soundtrack to Your Escape

Also, I used to own Morbid Angel-Covenant, but gave it away after first listen. Now I wish I hadn't.

I am going to check out Emperor, Amon Amarth, likythea aflame (sp), more In Flames, and I've also heard newer Kataklysm is good for being more melodic. Any other suggestions?

Crossroads was my choice at first, but then I saw this other DVD (Sessions for Robert Johnson), then I couldn´t decide between the 2... But as you said, Crossroads has other genres, so maybe that one will be my choice. Thanks! :thumb:
What kind of band are the Wildhearts?
I'll let one of the other few Wildhearts fans around here field that one. My views are skewed, since I started listening to them before I really knew a damn thing about genres.

Alessandro 03-01-2005 10:35 PM

Can anyone recommend me some Mars Volta songs? I listened to a few ones (actually a couple), but I´d like to know some more songs, because I heard many people saying that they´re a talented band, and from what I´ve listened so far they do seem to be talented. So, any sugestions?

Spectrum 03-01-2005 10:39 PM

Let's say I wanted to really show my Indie pride and get into some Indie artsits. The only stepping stone I can think of would be Damien Rice. What would you suggest I try?

Thanks.

note: I may know more Indie artists than I'm aware of; I'll let you know if you suggest bands I've already heard.

For people similar to Damien Rice, you would probably be recommended Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, and Tom Waits.

General indie artists, I'm not the best person to ask, as I have a hard time distinguishing between Alternative and Indie. Speaking of which, why not ask in the Alt/Indie forum?
What kind of band are the Wildhearts?
uhh...Essentially I think they're a rock band.
But have punky moments, metally moments and a bit of pretty much everything between.

You should love them though. Everyone should love The Wildhearts :)

Invicta_Veritas 03-02-2005 11:24 AM

My Dying Bride, doom metal? I don't exactly know the definition of doom metal, but I'm not thinkin they are it.

Jom 03-02-2005 11:26 AM

Doom metal is very slow, depressing death metal, basically. It tends to be very atmospheric and dark sounding. The vocals are the normal low, gutteral death vocals, but in a few of the bands I've heard, there's been a higher vocalist too.

Old Katatonia, old Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, and Shape Of Despair are good examples of doom metal... so to answer your question, MDB would fall under doom metal.

Bartender 03-02-2005 11:32 AM

Sorry AH, but slowed down death metal (such as MDB, Paradise Lost, Katatonia) aren't really doom metal; they're just that, slowed down death metal. It often gets called doom/death, I think.

Pure doom metal is Jondur's domain, and is basically a direct descendant of Black Sabbath. The vocals are usually clean and actually sung, and it's basically a much heavier, louder, and often more theatrical (and slower) extension of traditional heavy metal. Bands to look into; Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Solstice, St Vitus, Trouble, The River, Reverend Bizarre, Thee Plague of Gentlemen.

(some of those I've actually heard, some I'm just taking on Jondur's word)

Jom 03-02-2005 11:36 AM

Uh oh.

Ignore my post, then :sheepish:

Shred Danson 03-02-2005 11:41 AM

I've never thought of Paradise Lost as doom...

Jom 03-02-2005 11:42 AM

I said ignore my post!

Thanks, Bartender, for your advice, and I think I will.

Trev 03-02-2005 11:52 AM

Sorry for posting in the middle of a genre debate, but I have some recommendation requests.

I have Dream Theater's "Train of Thought", "Images and Words", and "Scenes from a Memory" (I also have the Live at Budokan DVD, and Liquid Tension's first album), and I am hoping to buy another album, which one album should I get next? Am I missing out on a classic?

Also, on a similar, progressive theme, I'm starting to like Symphony X, which album is best to buy first, to get me a real taste of the band?

And lastly, a first Helloween album, I like what I've downloaded, and would like to buy an album, and possibly build upon that.

Thanks a lot, I'll be happy if you can answer at least one of my questions.

munky_magik 03-02-2005 11:57 AM

You should probably get "Awake" for Dream Theater.

Which further proves my idiocracy (that's not even a word, but you get the point)

someone already used Turkey? 03-02-2005 12:50 PM

can anyone suggest some bands that are like the old slipknot or just some bands like, nu-metal but no rap and are not simple, if you get what Im saying, with screaming/growling lyrics

Dried Muffin Remnants 03-02-2005 01:41 PM

They aren't considered nu-metal but Opeth is complex and has growling.
