This may be a shot in the dark, but does anyone happen to have, or know any sites where I can find albums by the Atoms Family, especially "Euphony"? I think their albums are out of print, and I've been searching high and low for them. If you aren't familiar with the Atoms Family, some of the members I can remember are Blueprint, Greenhouse Effect, Aesop Rock, Vast Aire and Vordul (from Cannibal Ox), Apathy (I think), and El-P (I think). A lot of extremely talented mcs, and they are so badass.
Howdy everyone. Could we try compiling a list of definitive rap/hip hop albums that are must haves? I'd like to get some albums which set new standards, or were 'revolutionary' for their time.

My knowledge of rappers isn't too great, so i'd like your assistance. I'm assuming we'd have some NWA, Public Enemy, Tupac, Eric B and Rakim, Ice T (?). So help me out here.
My essential albums (others might not agree) in no order:

- Wu-Tang Clan- 36 Chambers (my fav. album ever, of any genre)
- Fugees- The Score
- Cannibal Ox- The Cold Vein
- Blackalicious- Blazing Arrow
- Company Flow- Funcrusher Plus
- GZA- Liquid Swords
- Grouch and Eligh- G & E Music Vol. 1 + 2
- Illogic- Celestial Clockwork
- Jedi Mind Tricks- Violent by Design
- Nas- Illmatic
- Souls of Mischief- '93 Til Infinity
- Deltron 3030- 3030

A really broad range of stuff there. I have to confess I'm not up on my 80's hip hop yet, so I'll let someone else fill you in on that stuff.

Robert Crumb 06-04-2006 09:17 PM

I've never been able to find any Atoms Family albums around here, but I did find a compilation that featured a couple tracks on it. "Time To Unravel" was my favorite on there that I can recall. So basically, I'm useless.

Jaded 06-04-2006 09:18 PM

Yeah, I have that song, and a few others I got off p2p, but that's all I've been able to find so far.

Knuckleheadz 06-04-2006 11:40 PM

My list of essentials would be...

Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
GZA/Genius - Liquid Swords
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
Notorious BIG - Ready to Die
Nas - Illmatic
Tupac - All Eyez On Me
Mac Dre - The Genie of the Lamp
Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back
Redman - Whut? Thee Album

Illmatic 06-05-2006 04:35 PM

"Hate It or Love It", "Soul Survivor", and "Ridin'" have been better than any of the "underground" stuff I've heard from the past year.

Discuss.

Who are those songs by?

Robert Crumb 06-06-2006 07:35 PM

The Game, Young Jeezy. David Banner? I think Chamillionaire has a song called "Ridin'" too.

There's been some good stuff this year, both underground and mainstream. But I mean, it's only June. What underground albums have you heard, Illmatic?

ATM 06-06-2006 07:38 PM

He basically hates everything I love.

Then I'd say you haven't heard any decent underground stuff. That riding dirty song? Young Jeezy?

2muchket! 06-07-2006 01:02 PM

Can't listen to the Game after his homophoic comments that he made on Jo Riley's a while back.

steelstompa88 06-07-2006 06:26 PM

westcoast rap fans

A heads up- If you haven’t heard of Roscoe’s new album I luv cali u should def. check it out. He’s Kurupt’s little bro and takes after his hot west coast rap style. I first heard it at UMG and instantly thought it was the bomb- impressive rhymes and sick beats- his hip hop beats will be exploding on the charts, so lemme know what you think- http://www.myspace.com/roscoeiluvcali.

Ve Das 06-08-2006 06:36 AM

Anyplace OTHER than geighspace where I can get any samples?

deadvoodoodoll 06-08-2006 11:35 AM

i haven't seen anyone say anything about Atmosphere. i thought more people would know who they are. or at least all the undergoud people to know who they are.

i also don't know much about rap so if anybody knows of any other groups/rapers like Atmosphere any suggestions would be cool

antiant 06-08-2006 12:17 PM

Atmosphere has been mentioned many times...why not learn to read ALL of the 42 pages instead of jumping on the last page assuming certain groups haven't been mentioned? :)

deadvoodoodoll 06-08-2006 12:37 PM

^^
i didn't read all the pages cuase im lazy, so instead i was reading every other page or so. and i didn't see Atmosphere mentioned in the ones i saw, so clam down man. it's my problem not yours

Everyone knows Atomosphere. Slug is in another group with Murs called Felt. They're awesome.

Illmatic 06-08-2006 01:26 PM
Who are those songs by?
"Soul Survivor" - Young Jeezy (Akon sings the hook)
"Ridin" - Chamillionaire
"Hate It or Love It" - The Game and 50 Cent
What underground albums have you heard, Illmatic?
Dangerdoom and the new Blackalicious album are really the only ones released in the last year that I've listened to.

For the most part I've learned from my mistakes and stayed away from the "underground".

DanD 06-08-2006 02:42 PM

I love that Blackalicous album.

Dangerdoom was kinda, meh.

I don't really consider those that underground, though.

CowboyBebop 06-08-2006 02:55 PM

Yea, me neither.

Knuckleheadz 06-08-2006 04:00 PM

That Chamillionaire song is the most obnoxious song I've heard all year.

Formofdark 06-08-2006 04:09 PM

I hate Chamillionaire all together, his voice bores me, its like 50 Cents, the same throughout the entire song, and just meh.

You're stating the obvious here and reiterating my point, btw I'm calm, I'm not the type to get my panties in a bunch over some text...read the other pages, you might learn something...and yes atmosphere is good, since you said you're somewhat new, why not add yourself to the hip hop/rap mailing list (it's on the same page different thread) unless, that is...you have very picky tastes, then in that case I would see no point in joining

Ve Das 06-09-2006 09:35 AM

Aye, I got a big laugh from the turkish stuff(REALLY cliché...), but on the whole, the mailing list´s been pretty dämn good.

Sepstrup 06-09-2006 09:40 AM

I'd really like to hear some good french hiphop. I love the language, and thought it would be interesting to hear.

I'm digging the Pharoahe Monch album, could someone upload some Organized Konfusion?

Kyle 06-14-2006 09:18 AM
Dangerdoom was kinda, meh.
It's not up to the incredibly high standard both artists have set, but it's still a sweet album in my oppinion. Crosshairs is a tune :D

It's not a terrible album, DJ Dangermouse was great on it, but I'm not really a fan of MF Doom. Plus the ATHF stuff is stupid, and theres too much of it.

Kyle 06-14-2006 10:05 AM

Yeah definately too much of it, especially when your like me, and you don't really know the thing that it comes from.

ATM 06-14-2006 10:09 AM

You have never seen Aqua Teen Hunger Force?

I downloaded the free DangerDoom album from Adult Swim yesterday, and its alright.

For those of you who dont really like MF Doom, you should try and find his album Operation Doomsday.

Where abouts on the Adult Swim website is it? I looked for about half an hour last week and had no luck.
