thread has become you and me

Dread_rocker 09-06-2005 12:25 PM

can't wait for the R30 dvd!!

Maggot Dream 09-06-2005 03:19 PM

Is Rush's recent stuff any good? I've heard some of its not their best. Any thoughts?

Cain 09-06-2005 03:25 PM

Xanadu and animepunk: Quit spamming the thread. If I see another batch of double-posting and one-sentence posts that don't move any kind of conversation along, I'm reporting you both. It's against the rules to pointlessly bump threads.

Vapor Trails is pretty **** good.

But there are no guitar solos. :(

YouGottaBeCrazy 09-06-2005 03:52 PM

I noticed. They're still good songs though, imo.

REALLY?!

Wow, that kind of makes me hesitant to check out their newer stuff

Maggot Dream 09-06-2005 07:06 PM

That really surprises me, Lifeson was always a huge part of the band's sound. Too bad.

Distant Echoes 09-06-2005 07:40 PM

Their arent any full guitar solos...but the album itself is very guitar heavy (Vapor trails). Instead of their usual keyboard synth stuff they do and usually slow down there songs out of nowere in most their latter 80s, early 90s progressive material, this album actually was a step up without the same instruments and style but with a more badass sound. Its a bit heavier, and their are defintaly parts were guitar was meant to stand out (but no thing like Tom Sawyer or spirit of radio), but its my favorite album by them in the past two decades. I would highly recommend it for a rush fan, after getting their older, higher end material first of course :)

It's not like he left the band. There just happens to not be any solos on Vapor Trails. I didn't even notice until a few days ago and I've had the album for months.

BludgeonySteve 09-07-2005 05:35 PM

Sometimes it's better for a song if the guitarist would leave out the solo. I like no solo better than a bad one.

Distant Echoes 09-07-2005 05:43 PM

Lifeson doesnt play bad solos :)

Sortta ticks me off that they cut down the working man solo in concert though...Id think they would extend that for 5 more minutes. I read an article about how they lack improv onstage a while back. Geddy claimed that improving lead them all to something like a different wandering state of mind, and it sometimes hard to get back on track with the same style or feel the song originally had. That wasnt exactly it, but something like it.

Personally I think a great band needs a great performance, and not just a replication of their good songs. Rush does put on a good show, some improv in selected song parts, but I feel theyd be a whole lot more powerful with more improv...theyre very capable of doing it.
Anybody agree?

Freewill. It sounds like his guitar is being tortured. I like that song, just not the solo. Too wanky.

thunderzstruck 09-07-2005 06:35 PM

I don't really like his solo tones on (the album) 2112, for the most part.

Maggot Dream 09-07-2005 07:06 PM
I don't really like his solo tones on (the album) 2112, for the most part.
I agree with you about the songs other than 2112. I think on 2112 itself, his tone is pretty good, especially on the Overture solo.

Xanadu 09-08-2005 08:33 PM

yo, in spirit of the radio at the end. what are they talking about or trying to say when hr sings "for the words of the prophets where written on the studio wall, and echoes with the sound of salesmen, of salesmen.ooooooooofffffff ssaallllessmen

Maggot Dream 09-08-2005 08:38 PM

"The words of the prophets were written on the wall" is a famous saying. I think it means that we should've seen coming what's happening now, because it was obvious in hindsight.

thunderzstruck 09-08-2005 09:13 PM

The album roll the bones is growing on me ALOT

dr._feelgood 09-09-2005 05:27 PM

I STILL can't get over the fact that I gave away my copy of Roll The Bones a year ago. Especially since I hear it's one of their best albums. My musical taste was so bad a year ago.

thunderzstruck 09-09-2005 11:45 PM

it's ok man, we all make mistakes in life... some REALLY stupid but in the broad scheme of things, you now like themand realize your mistake you can still enjoy Rush :)

Cain 09-10-2005 12:03 AM
"The words of the prophets were written on the wall" is a famous saying. I think it means that we should've seen coming what's happening now, because it was obvious in hindsight.
Actually, Peart meant it as a rather silly play on words--and cultural reference (indicating that Rush actually do NOT take themselves as seriously as they are often portrayed), as the lyric "For the words of the prophet were written on the subway hall" is from Simon and Garfunkel's hit "The Sound of Silence" off "The Graduate" soundtrack. Peart twisted it by making the line read "and the words of the PROFITS" (rather than "prophets") to make some sort of silly statement about the "money-grubbing music industry" and referencing the history of previous radio hits in a manner that's actually kind of fun for those who get the in-joke.

It's not really all as deep as you're making it, unfortunately, although I'm sure you can take it any way you like if it has personal significance for you. :)

dr._feelgood 09-10-2005 07:45 AM

The one Rush lyric I don't like is "Catch the spirit, catch the spit" from Tom Sawyer. What the hell is catch the spit supposed to mean?

thunderzstruck 09-10-2005 08:04 AM

One reason I love them too is because they don't take themselves very seriously and just like to have fun.

Maggot Dream 09-10-2005 07:55 PM

Yeah, I agree. That shows alot in Rush in Rio, all the weird cartoons and such.

Every writer who's not completely braindead has lyrics which are difficult to make sense of unless you of course know everything about everything.
