The Locust 06-18-2006 01:34 PM

haha thanks :thumb:

Do you know any other good stoner metal bands? I've tried to get into Kyuss lately but they just aren't working for me.

_Tyler 06-18-2006 01:39 PM

Has anyone heard Witch? They're a pretty straightforward stoner rock band but still awesome.

Linkage:

edit: Locust, just check out these guys, you'll probably like em.

edit2: I recommend The Sword too.

Kyle 06-18-2006 02:58 PM

The Sword freakin' awesome, they supported Nebula here in the UK. And whilst talking of Nebula, check them and Fu Manchu out Locust, if you havn't already.

Edit: Tyler, Witch is pretty cool stuff. Have you heard Dead Meadow? they are in the Witch's top 8 friends, they supported Dinosaur Jr when I saw them, pretty cool. If you havn;t check them out, they're kinda stoner-ish in their jam style, but they don't really play riffs.

_Tyler 06-18-2006 03:00 PM

Nebula are great.

Kyle 06-18-2006 03:05 PM

Yeah, the band that got me into stoner rock really. I did a review of Dos EP's for this site :D

Check it, if you feel like a read - http://www.sputnikmusic.com/album.php?reviewid=7169

_Tyler 06-18-2006 03:21 PM

Haha, I think you mean something different by 'South America' than it reads. I haven't heard that album, but it was a good review and you described their sound well.

Kyle 06-18-2006 03:38 PM

Oops, yeah good point, fixed. Thanks for the compliment too.

Any of you guys into The Atomic Bitchwax? I'm into them more than any other band of this style right now.

Bartender 06-18-2006 05:35 PM

They have basked in le spotlight d'Steerpike before.
Has anyone heard of YOB? I've been listening to The Unreal Never Lived lately, and it's fucking epic.

Here's a shitty quality mp3 from stonerrock if anyone wants to hear.
http://www.stonerrock.com/jukebox/YOB-Quantum_Mystic.mp3
They're okay. I have The Illusion of Motion. It's okay, like I say, but they could with improving plenty.
I recommend The Sword too.
I checked out Age of Winters a while ago. It was pretty good but it just sounded like good old heavy metal, not stoner anything.

Anyway, I'm kind of surprised to see you bump this thread for a whole page of conversation and make no mention of Boris, given your avatar.

_Tyler 06-18-2006 05:43 PM

Then Boris we shall discuss. Thoughts on 'Pink'?

Bartender 06-18-2006 05:56 PM

Unfortunately my thoughts on Pink are currently restricted, mostly to things like "I love the fact that it's finally winging its way towards me". I just finally managed to get it for a half-decent price some time last week, so I don't have it yet, but I do have high hopes for it. Pretty much every reaction I've heard to it so far has been positive; by and large ridiculously positive. Hopefully this is a good thing. What do you think of it?

_Tyler 06-18-2006 06:01 PM

It's very diverse. There are mellow songs, ballsy rock songs, drone songs, slower bluesy songs...the first song is even a Mogwai-esque post-rock song. In short, I love it.

Kyle 06-19-2006 05:17 AM

Wow, just listened to Boris, that's great stuff. What do you reccomend I listen to by them first? I only checked out the songs on their myspace; Pink, Korosu and Ibitsu.

_Tyler 06-19-2006 07:09 AM

I'd recommend Akuma No Uta or Pink if you liked those, since those are all more rock songs. Most of their other records are drone or really experimental stuff. Pink will give you a taste of everything though, so I'd go with that, then check out their back catalogue.

Bartender 06-19-2006 11:13 AM

I think I'm kind of hoping Pink will play like an extended Akuma No Uta (showing off all the different styles they play in one release and whatnot). And be good whilst doing so, naturally.

Anyway, it didn't arrive this morning. Though Dawn of Possession and a lighter with a picture of a carp on it did.

That's essentially what it is. Only better.

So uh...Cathedral? Who's into them? Satanic robots and such.

Kyle 06-19-2006 02:46 PM

I always liked the instrumentation for Cathedral, but the vocals are pretty irritating on some songs. I like their upbeat stuff more than their doom stuff, The Garden of Unearthly Secrets is a good listen.

I like how this thread is going nicely again now, but I hope it doesn't turn into a 3 way discussion.

_Tyler 06-19-2006 03:06 PM

Cathedral's vocals/lyrics are all out cheese. That's why I love em.

There seems to be a few other dudes here into this stuff, I'm sure other people will get involved or whatever.

Kyle 06-19-2006 03:09 PM

If it was cheesy lyrics which put me off, I would hardly like Nebula would I?

_Tyler 06-19-2006 03:11 PM

Hah, true. Cathederal are on a whole 'nother level of cheese though.

I recently checked out Candlemass because I was reading this thread and someone recommended them. Now THAT was the cheesiest thing I've ever heard. Right next to King Diamond.

Jondur 06-20-2006 09:36 AM

I can see how someone who could really sing would put you off. Far better to hear some stupid hippie singing about drugs or some drone!

AA-12 06-20-2006 09:45 AM

Anyone here like Goblin Cock? I bought Bagged and Boarded yesterday, and I love it.

Kyle 06-20-2006 10:36 AM
Anyone here like Goblin Cock? I bought Bagged and Boarded yesterday, and I love it.
I have never, but that's quite the amusing band name? What/who are they like?

I've been digging High On Fire today, not sure how relevant they are to this thread (I suck at genres), but it's good non-the-less.

AA-12 06-20-2006 10:38 AM

They are actually really good. Here's a link to their myspace: http://myspace.com/goblincock

I know you're the doom authority here so I'm not going to argue with you, I just wasn't into them.

_Tyler 06-20-2006 11:24 AM

Hahaha best cover art

Kyle 06-20-2006 11:26 AM

Haha, it's so hard to take that band seriously. But in actual fact, the tunes on their website are pretty cool.

AA-12 06-20-2006 11:26 AM

Yeah, haha. It was awkward buying the album.

_Tyler 06-20-2006 11:28 AM

It took me a while to notice the giant purple goblin-hammer peeking out the bottom of his robe.
