I was recently having a discussion with somebody about pink floyd. He swore blind that pink floyd were an "old school punk band". Now usually I tend not to worry about labels as they tend to carry images with them and make music more of an elitist club than something for the enjoyment of the masses, but this statement confused me. To me pink floyd had always been prog rock, seemingly an almost complete opposite to anything punk. I asked him in what way he felt they were a punk band, but he seemed to think the answer was far to obvious to bother repeating to me, and then directed me here, telling me I'd learn something.
Now I don't consider myself an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but since I first heard my dad's copy of DSoTM so many years ago I've been getting my ears into everything of theirs I could find, but apparently I'm missing something. So, have I just missed an entire collection of little known pink floyd punk, or am I just so ignorant that I haven't realised I was listening to punk all these years?
Remember kids, friends don't let friends call Pink Floyd punk! |
Well, it looks like two discussions have cropped up in the forum about Pink Floyd. I'm posting the links, but please try to discuss them in here, the official thread, rather than there, the illegal thread.
Philosophy of Dark Side Of The Moon The Wall's Backup Singers (Those Kids) Now, I know I have never pushed for this to be the sole place for PF discussion on MX, but I think since we are official, I will try to keep it all in here. So, I will be happy to discuss these things, just I will discuss them in here.
Agreed. This is the official Pink Floyd thread, all Pink Floyd discussion should go here. On another note, VOTE FOR SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND IN THE POLL!!!! |
 im listening to the wall right now
|
hello bros?
|
I just wanna say that Pink Floyd is the best band EVER!!!
|
This thread is not as lively as it used to be... tis sad. Has anyone seen that one animated movie that Roger Waters did the music for?
Agreed. This is the official Pink Floyd thread, all Pink Floyd discussion should go here.
On another note, VOTE FOR SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND IN THE POLL!!!!
better watch what you say...last time i said to vote for a floyd song i got flamed. But seriously...Shine on isnt doing as good as i had expected. Of course i voted for it, but its still tied for fourth it think. I think thats gonna be the next song i learn on guitar...after i finish Dark Side of the moon, and get the hundreds of dollars in effects he uses for JUST THE INTRO SOLO. its gonne be hell. Im sortta debating....wether to spend this life either getting money for the effects or learning the songs  but as long as im posting in this thread, what do you guys think of the Live in Pompeii DVD. I wanna get it for xmas, so any thoughts would help. |

but as long as im posting in this thread, what do you guys think of the Live in Pompeii DVD. I wanna get it for xmas, so any thoughts would help.
I got the directors cut. Its SOOOOOOOOOOO good. I can't stress how good it is. The directors cut has interviews as opposed to the normal one, and it has a LOT of interviews. They do all the stuff so well on it. Daves echos solo is was better than the Meddle one, and careful with that axe eugene is so amazing. get the DVD. and super floyd trivia: where does the name Eugene in careful with that axe eugene come from? |
Is it just me or do you appreciate things ten times more when you hear it on the radio?
I was driving in my car with my friends today and all of a sudden the DJ comes on and starts talking about the Wall and the 25th an. Anyways he plays the rare clip of Pigs On The Wing when Waters gets pissed off and spits on a fan (in Montreal, where I live). I'm like "Holy **** they're actually playing this." Then they actually played the whole album on the radio. I mean, hearing The Thin Ice on a radio station was deffinately a new experience. At home when I listen to it, I get the same feeling. But for some reason when I heard it on the radio, the album seemed so much more alive. I guess it's because I never expected that in 1,000,000 years. It was so cool to hear them play ABITWP1 then go into HDOUL instead of just going into ABITWP2. That album is so genius. |
You have an awesome radio station man.
Anyone like the new avatar? |

Comfortably Numb came on the radio at my girlfriend's work, while I was in there talking to her, and I went absolutely ballistic. I was singing along, in between begging her to turn it up. Luckily she likes Floyd as much as me, so between us we had an awesome rendition going along. :thumb: |

Anyone like the new avatar?
Gilmour looks like a pedophile now, mate. |
Gilmour looks like a pedophile now, mate.
Santa is a pedophile, so yes, he does. The Lorax, however, looks pimp. |
I say, everyone who is voting for Pink Floyd in the final poll, should vote for the same song. I suggest Comfortably Numb, but I don't remember what the third one was (I know Time made it.)
Comfortably Numb, Time and Money are all through. I'll probably vote for Comfortably Numb. :o
I will too. |
Where's this poll thing? I'd so vote for Dogs.
|
Hmmm... Well, Comfortably Numb is very good. But will it get the noob vote?

I dunno. I still say that we should all vote Comfortably Numb though. Gotta see Pink Floyd win one of these polls! *still bitter that Led Zeppelin won best classic rock band poll* |
Well, it looks like I have to make a statement.
As the Founder of The Official Pink Floyd Thread I encourage everyone to vote Comfortably Numb regardless of whether you prefer Time or Money. Better to have a Floyd song win, then to have nothing. And, we must push Stairway off the edge. Too many noob votes. |
HANDS DOWN BEST PINK FLOYD SONG:

Without those, Comfortably Numb is in 4th place (there's a tie for second.) With those, Comfortably Numb would be in 1st place.... **** fools. |
When will people learn!
|
awesome
Pink Floyd is amazing....no other band can put so much feeling and awesome grooviness into a song. The second solo in Comfortably Numb gives me shivers everytime i hear it....same with Time and Have a Cigar and Shine on you Crazy Diamond part 1.
I have seen the Pink Floyd laser show twice and it is the craziest experience. They start it out w/ the wizard of oz and dark side of the moon, it totally matches up man :thumb: I like the stuff with Roger Waters as the leader the best, though i havent heard much of the Syd Barrett stuff. I've seen a video of Time live when Gilmour did it, and it just isnt the same, he's not as smooth a vocallist ya know? |
I've seen a video of Time live when Gilmour did it, and it just isnt the same, he's not as smooth a vocallist ya know?
Wrong, wrong, wrong. David has a great voice, and can create amazing harmonies with multi-tracks. You also cant always get the same sound live. BTW
Time (Mason, Waters, Wright, Gilmour) [05:54] Vocals by Gilmour and Wright.
Gilmour has always done vocals on the track. |
Waters is a control freak, Gilmour is the man!
|
Agree. Gilmour owns Waters.
