Ildjarn is like Impaled Nazarene's Ugra-Karma in that it communicates raw hatred that is part of what black metal is about. But Ildjarn is even more hostile than anything else I've ever heard, and with that I think that it's more pure black metal than anything else because it is really true to it's ideas of solitude and hatred. It doesn't want to be enjoyable or acceptable. It doesn't reach out for an audience. If you like it, fine, if you don't, fine.

What other Ulver albums should I check out? I've only listened to Bergtatt.

Kveldssanger for a really good folk album

Nattens Madrigal for a really good, but pretty raw, black metal album.

And if you want to go for some of their electronica material go for Svidd Neger or Perdition City.

The two that come after it.

It's not meant to be pleasurable. What. No-one listens to and enjoys anything that isn't pleasurable. Like it or not, you obviously enjoy Ildjarn meaning that it is - PLEASURABLE.

The fact that it's not meant to be pleasurable doesn't mean that some can't find it pleasurable, even if the opposite was intended. Thus, it may be pleasurable to him, though it may have not meant to be that way by the artist. Quit arguing for the sake of arguing.

My knowlege is not broad because I don't spend all of my time downloading thousands of generic albums, listening to them once and then moving onto something else. I think that kind of behaviour shows a need to be an expert in a genre but yet that never gets you any deep knowlege of the music. Perhaps there is black metal more raw than Ildjarn out there and probably there is. I don't claim to be an expert. Maybe one day I'll come across that, but I've no desparation to find the 1337est BM out there because right now I'm happy enjoying the better known bands.

People who are secure in themselves don't need to constantly assert that they are the best. I understand elitism as a means of weeding out poor bands and only listening to the best but there's a difference between just doing that by yourself, and your focus when coming to a forum being discussing the best and recommending the best, and being someone who needs to go around asserting that they are elite and spending most of their time criticizing everyone else for not being as elite as them.
