First time I heard Octavarium: Not bad. TROAE was good, Panic Attack was good, but that was about it.

Haven't listened to Octavarium since last year maybe. When did it come out in Australia? Well, the point is I haven't listened to it in a long, long, long time.

Just a rant: on the Dream Theater boards, when Octavarium first came out, it pissed me off how everyone was comparing the flute section to the Godfather theme. That was probably the only other tune they knew with a bloody flute in it!
i love that flute melody. so simple, yet so elegant.
im a sucker for orchestral instruments, seeing as how i've been in one for many years

I hated that

Lie being my favourite Petrucci solo...

Edit: I really like the Lie video clip :p
Is there like a DVD available which has all DT video clips?

*Watching it on GoogleVideo is bad because of the quality :/

5 years/LiT DVD has all of them up until FII. I don't think they made any after that anyways.

Moses 05-22-2006 09:08 PM

It's seems with Octavarium they didn't really care about shredding as much, just making kickass songs. And that's the way it should be.

yea lie has an amazing solo (especially the 2nd one), but it was still funny XD

i hear there's a malmsteen one floating around. i wanna see that one too

Jev 05-23-2006 05:18 AM

Malmsteen what?

The DVD sounds amazingly sexy.

Chu 05-23-2006 05:34 AM

You know how some guy made a video of Petrucci's Lie Solo?
There's a rip at Malmsteen too :p

I guess he's got a problem with shred?

I wouldn't really call the Lie solo shred (Well, the legato run at the beginning of the solo, but sif that makes the whole thing shred).

Jev 05-23-2006 05:42 AM

Oh right. I'm gonna look for it.

Chu 05-23-2006 08:32 AM

Heh, this is pretty cool.

Jev 05-23-2006 09:10 AM

Haha, I remember that video, only because I was playing at the time and a string snapped and ended up in my finger.

ghettoeddo 05-23-2006 11:00 AM

there's nothing wrong w/ shred imo if its used sparingly and well.

methinks petrucci likes it just a tad too much. he's still one of my favorite guitarrists though

Jev 05-23-2006 11:03 AM

I thought it wasn't needed on things like the Hollow Years improv and Through Her Eyes on SFNY.
Otherwise, keep the shred coming.

jpshortstuff 05-23-2006 11:09 AM

i think it was quite good on hollow years on L@B, but yeah THE was going a bit far.

ghettoeddo 05-23-2006 01:02 PM

agreed.
it was ok on hollow years...but i think it would've been better if it hadn't been there.

his vibrato amazes me. it's so clean.

Personally, I think that the improv on Hollow Years is a perfect example of how shred can be used well. Same goes for Another Day.

Lord Abortion 05-23-2006 02:29 PM

Yeah, the hollow years bit is amazing, comes into the song flawlessly.

Blue Collar Man 05-23-2006 05:28 PM

Here's the Michael Romeo one if anyone wants to see it:

Unfortunately the Malmsteen one was removed.

Jev 05-23-2006 05:36 PM

Wasn't as funny as the Petrucci one though, he's getting better :p

OK this was very funny and very well done too. :p I hope to see Malmsteen's soon.:)

nowitzki 05-23-2006 06:17 PM

Um... no.

Blue Collar Man 05-23-2006 06:21 PM

Wtf was that about?

Anyway what about Dream Theater?

Atica 05-23-2006 06:25 PM

I was listen DT right now and came up with this question, which i can't still answer. What song do you like more A Cahnge of Seasons or Octavarium?

Blue Collar Man 05-23-2006 08:53 PM

I like Octavarium better personally. I actully don't think I like ACOS quite as much as everyone else seems to. It just doesn't seem up to par with thier other epics but I still love it. Octavarium on the other hand is more gripping to me and full of more lushious melodies and moods.

Chu 05-23-2006 11:38 PM

Meh, imo Petrucci does't shred enough...

ghettoeddo 05-24-2006 12:04 AM

^ are you joking? it's pretty much all he does ><

i prefer 8vm more over ACOS myself at this point. although another world and razor's edge are tied as overall favorite sections.
