It's not like I know anything about death vocals anyway. I'm not even sure how to do it without messing up your throat.
There's actually an extensive thread on proper screaming in the Jam Session forum last time I checked. You might want to look there.

I looked at the first few pages of it but it mostly seemed to be focused more on 'screaming' (as in screamo vocals or Slayer-type stuff) and I ran out of time to sift through it or something.

Ah, yeah, I thought it might have to do with that kind of thing.

Oh well, it was worth a shot. Maybe you should go to another Opeth show so you can get a free lesson. :p

Stormrider 11-22-2005 06:58 PM

I heard somewhere that you dont use your throat, but your stomach for growling. that just makes it a lot harder.

vashts80 11-22-2005 07:09 PM

You shouldn't use your throat to move the air, you should move your stomach to otherwise if you use your throat, you'll eventually hurt your vocal chords. This is why most of the time growlers keep their jaw open more than if you were singing, so their throat doesn't close and you have to use it

Toaster 11-22-2005 07:15 PM

I think everything said about growling is just confusing. I do flex my stomache muscles, but I definitely feel it in my throat. It's not like you flex your abs and breathe out, and you're Mikael.

Morningrise 11-22-2005 07:18 PM
The old albums are fine the way they are. I don't think they would sound right with modern production and the new growling style, and especially not with Mendez as opposed to the old bassist. The bass on Morningrise is totally unlike anything Opeth has done afterward.

Sometimes you should just leave well enough alone; if it ain't broke, why fix it?
I agree with you there.

Toaster 11-22-2005 07:21 PM

It's not like the old albums would go out of print, but if they just redid them and maybe put them online only, it would be great IMO. I'd like to see a lot of bands do this, actually.

Shattered_Future 11-22-2005 07:25 PM

Yea, better production and better vocals would make those albums even better than they already are.

Killtacular 11-22-2005 07:33 PM

I'll agree with this. During my unending free time at work, I've been practicing my Mikael growls. I've come to the conclusion that the best way is to take a big breath and just push as much air as possible out with your stomach while making a small hole in your mouth. This also results in many headaches on my part from lack of oxygen.

Good times.
I should record it later on, when I've practiced more.

Darkness 11-22-2005 07:36 PM

I can really floor it with my stomach, but it hurts my throat, but it sounds bad ass. All these tips people give me just confuse the hell out of me.

Det_Nosnip 11-22-2005 07:39 PM
O Yeh.

That would seriously make my life. Too bad Mikael and Co. hate those two albums.
Mikael wrote in the online diary that My Arms, Your Hearse is his favorite album.

I've heard him say that Still Life is his favorite...

My throat used to hurt, but one time I just went until the growl was totally raw and my throat felt about to burst. I couldn't talk for a couple minutes, but since then I've had this weird rough tissue in my throat (or something) that lets me growl without much effort or pain.

I'd like that.. I think my growl can sound good, but I don't want to go through that whole bursting thing.

'Tis my favorite. :D

Det- I was referring to Orchid and Morningrise...

MAYH is definitely underrated though. The songwriting on that album is top-notch. The metal sections are definitely on a peerless level of intensity.

Death vocals are the easiest dirty vocals to me. Easy as talking once you get the technique down.:thumb:

His new dirty vocals own but I never really liked his clean vocals. To me they don't sound good unless it's layered up like on Still Day Beneath The Sun.

Sometimes it works well and sometimes it doesn't. I find when I have a nice layer of snot in my throat it works especially well. (it's really there, you have one, too, so stop being a nancy and wetting yourself)

I suppose you should have a nice swallow to lube up the food tube before you go shouting about like a yeti.

What's your technique? (I think you've told me before, but I've forgotten)

I used to just use the snot in my throat, but I could only do that for a couple minutes or so because it would be too hard not to swallow. :p I try to practice with zero mucus (sp) now.

That sounds... painful.

I pity you for that. Such self-mutilation is for emo-kids.

Hmmm.... I can't remember how I explained it before. I'll try again. Point your tongue and bring it back a little on the roof of your mouth past the teeth and where the bend starts and go "OOO!!!" or "EEE!!". Sorry but that's the best I can do  .

Toaster 11-22-2005 08:05 PM

To Scruples: I think the fact that I growl takes me off the emo kid list. You, however, have a fairy in your avatar. :D

ok lateralus 11-22-2005 08:07 PM

Hmm, after listening to both lately, I've been maybe thinking MAYH is slightly superior to Still Life. Just the overall quality is amazing, whereas maybe some parts of Still Life could be better.

Where the bend starts?

Forget it.

Hey, I do that too!! Cool. The bend is the thing at the roof of your mouth right after your teeth. It isn't useful for pronunciation, but it's awesome when holding growls.

Moses 11-22-2005 08:09 PM

I don't know. Would dome be a better explanation?

Two threads in a row. Tonight just isn't my night.
(except I'm winning in the other thread. Heh heh.)

Moses 11-22-2005 08:23 PM

Wrong. You aren't winning in the other thread. What makes you think that?
