I just got Octavarium and the first two songs are boring as fuck. These Walls starts off pretty good and that's about where I am right now.

that what i was like the first time i heard it, until Panic Attack, which made me sit up and say "Hello". After a few more listens i got into it more, as with most DT.

GenuineImitation 05-21-2006 02:39 PM

Octavarium really grows on you. At first I thought it was good, but not great. Now its one of my favorite cds.

They really should have opened the cd up with Panic Attack.

I think that the order of the songs would be better like this:
panic attack
never enough
the root of all evil
these walls
the answer lies within
i walk beside you
sacrified sons
octavarium

what do you guys think?

GenuineImitation 05-21-2006 05:21 PM

I think its fine the way it is. The songs were designed to simulate a musical octave. Hence the name octavarium. If you change the order, then the concept is gone. Also, Octavarium ends where the root of all evil begins. Not have TROAL as track one will ruin the theme of "coming full circle" , as well as the octave concept.

Wow, I haven't seen it like that. You are right man, thanks for that detail. :thumb:

No problem. There is a whole site dedicated to the album. I'll get the link.

Thanks, since I read your post about the form of Octavarium, I searched about it and then noticed some cool stuff about the drawings on the cd and the lyric paper.

The album is really well thought out and is more progressive then people give it credit for. If you look at the link, it has a plethera of info on the album and individual songs. Its really worth checking out and reading. It makes you appreciate the album even more.

NP: Pull Me Under

Atica 05-21-2006 07:49 PM

Yeah, I noticed that, just the way that everything is linked to one another is amazing. They really had a very clear idea of what to create, this albun is just amazing.

Inkstar 05-21-2006 09:15 PM

First time I heard the album Octavarium: "What is this crap?"

Now: "Meh... It's alright."

ghettoeddo 05-21-2006 11:16 PM

first time i heard the album octavarium: "holy shiiiiiiiiiitt!"

now: "HOLY SHIIIIIIIIIIIITTT!"

Lord Abortion 05-22-2006 02:07 AM

Sacrificed sons is probably my favourite from that album at the moment.

ghettoeddo 05-22-2006 02:18 AM

great song great song.
im still a fan of the title track. brilliant. and very playable too :] minus the freaking shredding bit, btu even that's doable. it's just the same pattern.

badtaste 05-22-2006 04:32 AM

First time I heard Octavarium: Not bad. TROAE was good, Panic Attack was good, but that was about it.

Haven't listened to Octavarium since last year maybe. When did it come out in Australia? Well, the point is I haven't listened to it in a long, long, long time.

Just a rant: on the Dream Theater boards, when Octavarium first came out, it pissed me off how everyone was comparing the flute section to the Godfather theme. That was probably the only other tune they knew with a bloody flute in it!

Clunge 05-22-2006 04:41 AM

Octavarium is by far my favourite DT album now.

I can't stop listening to it, These Walls, Never Enough and Panic Attack work as a great middle to the CD, ROAL opens well and Octavarium itself closes the CD is grand style.

So yeah, Octavarium

Jev 05-22-2006 10:07 AM

I actually bought it for myself yesterday, my friend can have his copy back after what, 6 months? :p

i love that flute melody. so simple, yet so elegant.
im a sucker for orchestral instruments, seeing as how i've been in one for many years

Jev 05-22-2006 11:20 AM

I've never ever heard someone compare the flute to Godfather

A little late.

I swear there's new stuff on it.

It's one of the best songs on there.

MeTaLfAcE 05-22-2006 02:34 PM

Has anybody here listened to Pipo and Elo? For those who don't know, Pipo and Elo are a couple who released an acoustic tribute cd of some Dream Theater songs. The guitar work sounds pretty good but the girl singing needs to be put to sleep.

nowitzki 05-22-2006 03:06 PM

^Yeah, some of the tracks are great, while others don't work so well. I actually quite like the vocals.

Blue Collar Man 05-22-2006 06:13 PM

This could be the funniest video I've ever seen.

Bow down to Petrucci's ultimate guitar solo.
