****, Bartender just set the record straight.

*feels like a rascist* :thumb:

Illmatic 05-22-2005 05:47 PM
Maybe it's because those movies are all about how the white man keeps the brother man down - even in a galaxy far, far away. Check this ****. You got cracker farm-boy Luke Skywalker, Nazi poster boy - blond hair, blue eyes. And then youve got Darth Vader: the blackest brother in the galaxy. Nubian God. Now Vader, hes a spiritual brother, down with the force and all that ****. Then this cracker (Skywalker) gets his hands on a light-saber, and the boy decides hes gonna run the ****ing universe - gets a whole Klan of whites together, and theyre gonna bust up Vaders's hood, the Death Star. Now what the **** do you call that! Gentrification. Theyre gonna drive out the black element, to make the galaxy quote, unquote "safe" for white folks. Jedis the most insulting installment, because Vaders beautiful, black visage is sullied when he pulls off his mask to reveal a feeble, crusty old white man! Theyre trying to tell us that deep inside, we all want to be white!
No, no, go on. I love being stereotyped.

im not a huge fan. some of my friends can actually recite the first line to line. its actually kind of sad.

Sorry :) I copy-pasted it from a Chasing Amy script I looked up on google in about three seconds. Couldn't resist.

I really want to watch that film now, though.

Illmatic 809
ArrestThisMan 807

It looks like I have to pass the crown off to Ray.

Does anyone know who was the brains behind Smashing Pumpkins? I can't believe I didn't check out one of their albums sooner.

Billy Corgan.
Kevin Smith makes some great movies.
Some of his work is really good. Some of it is...not so good.

After their first album, Billy Corgan pretty much wrote and recorded everything except the drums.

I'm now adding Billy Corgan to my list of favorite musical geniuses.
I'm now adding Billy Corgan to my list of favorite insufferable douchebags
Fix'd.

I hate that guy.

After their first album they all went to hell. Coincidence?

EDIT:

Also, today me and my friend were just chillin' out (maxin', relaxin' all cool) and we somehow got to thinking--if we had to name the three greatest music artists of the 20th century, who would be on there? Miles Davis would have to be a given, right? Who would the other two be?

munky_magik 05-22-2005 05:57 PM

Billy Corgan is a great writer as far as I'm concerned. He's just an asshole.

ATM 05-22-2005 05:59 PM

What does he do that makes him an asshole?

I'm pretty clueless about American music in the 90's, because I was overseas.

Illmatic 05-22-2005 06:03 PM

He alienated himself from everyone in the band except the drummer and turned into an unbelievably pompous asshole.

He wrote and recorded all the guitar and bass parts for Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by himself because he didn't think James Iha and their bassist were good enough to contribute to the album (which he said in so many words).

His utter self-indulgence carried the band into a downward spiral both personally (the band broke up because no one could stand him) and musically (all of their albums get progressively more pretentious and crappy as their career goes on).

magicbus 05-22-2005 06:10 PM

I went to see Revenge of the Sith again today.

If you ask me, I don't think that movie is worth seeing twice. Once is good enough for me.

I will get it when it comes out on DVD though.

There's a pretty cool program on right now about unknown British rappers writing Rap Musicals.

Short answer would be that I think picking a top three seems impossible :-/ Longer answer would be similar, but with more reasoning why. It depends how you measure greatest, for a start, and then there's just that three is too few for an entire century; you'd have to have someone (preferably several) to represent blues, and then jazz (and yeah, Miles would probably be a given), etc. I don't think it could be done, basically. Or more accurately, it's too difficult for me to want to try.

I only class one as a sheep. That one spent around half an hour today wandering around my garden and eating grass.

Channel 4. Interestingly enough, they don't include the word "******/s" on subtitles.

Ray, I could never narrow down my list to just 3. My list of musical geniuses is quite long.

Riva 05-22-2005 07:23 PM

Ray, I was inspired to check out Illmatic, and I must say, it is really impressive. Nas is a great rapper, and his lyrics are much more impressive than the stuff I hear my sister play.

mellon collie and the inifinite sadness is quite possibly the definition of excess in the 90's.

Hmm. That's a pretty varied question.

I'd be pretty hard to just have three, but if I had to choose two, my choices would be Bob Dylan and Frank Sinatra.

Riva 05-22-2005 08:03 PM

Hmmm... three greatest how?

Greatest musicians (talent and inspiration) would be perhaps... Mike Oldfield and Thom Yorke.

Greatest influences would be Frank Zappa and Bob Dylan.

Greatest entertainers would be the crooners (Sinatra, Martin et al) and Elvis Presley.

I think that it would have to be a combination of talent, vision, impact, influence, and recognition--which would ultimately make it impossible to narrow it down to just three. But what if we were to expand it to a top five or ten? That would be feasible, I think.
