mx, the administrator of this site, decided that filesharing was not something he wanted to promote on this site. As musicianforums.com is his domain, it was his call.

Just as a sidenote, as I understand it, the internet is under international law in most cases, except for the actions of an individual. Hence the reason some websites, etc ask you to sign an agreement that you are not violating your local laws. Hence I can legally make copies of music on a non-profit basis (for backup, etc) in Australia, and Neuro can upload music in Canada. However, what the people on the downloading end are doing could be illegal, and thus the sticky wicket is reached.

However, the RIAA has no right to shut down websites that are operating under international law. Unfortunately, I think they could get away with it since mx is in the US. But anyways, it was his call, and we should respect him for it.

Single or quadruple smilies will get you banned. Lets make a deal. You go read ALL the rules, find the little message I left in them for you, and I won't ban you. You have an hour. Ready? Set? GO!

9. If a thread is mostly made of spam posts, it will be eliminated. This includes posts that consist of a single smiley. Remember, if you post in one of these threads you will be banned.

I don't think you want to argue technicalities with the moderators.

Jom 09-07-2005 08:49 PM

Especially Ken, of all the R&M mods.

SonorKen 09-07-2005 09:10 PM

Don't argue with me. You did break a rule. Its spam. Argue some more and see what happens.

I was nice and gave you a chance to read the rules and edit your post. You decided to be a smart azz.

well can you answer this question?? how come 123 and 1 smiley posts are illegal and they never get banned but i post 4 smileys and i get banned?
well can you answer this question?? how come 123 and 1 smiley posts are illegal and they never get banned but i post 4 smileys and i get banned?
Argh! Stupid needs to be painful.
19. Don't post '123' or anything senseless like that. No one cares if you agree with the poster. If you have something to add then post. Posting 123 will be considered spam and you will be temp. banned.

22. When you create a thread make sure you put up an intelligent observation or opinion. Same with replying in a thread. Don't create a thread and say, "I love Nine Inch Nails!, Tell me what you think!". These threads waste space and invite spam. Post up why you like the band or anything relevant and intelligent that you think about them.
Can your tiny mind extrapolate this information? Or does the word extrapolate have too many syllables for you?

Chu 09-07-2005 09:20 PM

It's the same thing man, sometimes people get banned for it, sometimes not.
It depends if a mod sees it, you cannot expect a mod to be on MX 24/7.

Drop the argument man, you're fighting for nothing.

I ban people who post 123's and smileys when I see them. If the other mods don't that is their choice. Now, your question is answered. This discussion is over. Don't post smilie responses, they are a waste of time and space.

Howcome in the announcement the R&M Hurricane Katrina thread link doesn't work?

I don't see this thread going anywhere. It's just a variation of a "favorite band" thread, so it's also against the rules.

Wow, Ken, you posted 15,000 times since I saw you last! :p (DBJ'd, I'm guessing?)

MX decided that illegal file sharing is something that he doesn't want on the site.

I see. Will the song or album uploads in other threads be considered illegal as well?
I see. Will the song or album uploads in other threads be considered illegal as well?
No one's quite sure right now. NPC has brought the issue up in the mod forum so hopefully someone will keep us lowly users informed. I think the best plan if you have to upload an album/song for someone would be to give them the link over AIM/MSN. At least until we know for certain what MX's feelings on the subject are.

Bartender 09-08-2005 08:00 AM

His feelings so far seem to be that he doesn't want any YSI-esque links on the site.

Jondur 09-08-2005 08:50 AM

I agree that people who upload full albums should have their eyes cleaned with wire wool but single song uploads are a very good thing. Unless they're leaked songs there would never be any risk of illegal action etc.

Tell him to stop being a big girl. Downloading full albums is for flowery mincers, single song sharing is cooler than blue jeans, leather jacket and a well oiled quiff.

IAJP 09-08-2005 09:11 AM

File sharing has corrupted this site, I won't lie, I did download stuff that people uploaded, the odd song or two, but I think in my entire internet-life that I've never downloaded a full album.

Good riddance maybe? I wouldn't want MX closed down due to personal greed, no suh.

Anyone?

Six Foot Revolver 09-08-2005 09:43 AM

Good ridance to the YSI thread to be honest, it was a nifty thread at first but it got way out of hand. If I ran a site as large as MX and illegal file sharing was going on at that high a rate I would probably put an end to it too. I am suprised it didn't cause many problems tbh.
