I know there's not much love for Harlequin Forest 'round these parts, but I love that song. It's somewhere near being my favorite Opeth song. Not to mention Ghost of Perdition...Baying of the Hounds...Atonement. I think it's a great album, full of variety and excellent atmosphere.

Killtacular 11-21-2005 08:46 PM
It beats Damnation, in my opinion. Way more interesting.
Pfff. How do you figure that?

Toaster 11-21-2005 08:47 PM

I've said it before, but I think Damnation isn't even Opeth. The songwriting is simple, they don't balance light with heavy.. don't get me started. :p

RouteOne 11-21-2005 08:48 PM
ghost reveries is not nearly as bad as you are saying it is. better than orchid, thats for sure. i like the diversity in GR
Absolutely not.

Oh man i love that song, in fact is becoming my fav. opeth song....the vocals blend so perfect with the music...i love it man!:D

Edit: Here's a segment of a song I recorded this morning. It's quality is garbage, but the song is really cool live. Check it out.

I'm sure no one expects studio quality from something you recorded in your basement :p

Cool song though. It sounds like you took a page out of Opeth's book with that acoustic break, and the fact that you broke off into it right from the heavier section.
I'm trying to get into new bands.

I've heard the great conjuring and I was floored. What are some other good things to check out from them?

Ie, an awesome album to buy?
For bands, pay attention to the ones people around here whore, that's how I found most of the ones I've gotten into recently. For Opeth albums, I'd go with Blackwater Park or MAYH, both have a good balance of their soft/heavy styles. Or, if you really liked the Grand Conjuration, get Ghost Reveries...ignore the GR haters in this thread, it's a great album.

The vocal melodies are amazing on that song. I love the guitar sound, too. And the outro is awesome. It's definately in my top five Opeth songs.

Toaster 11-21-2005 08:53 PM

It's just so.. droning. It goes on for soooo long, the intro seems like it's never going to end. There's also a lack of inventiveness. I mean one riff is just open harmonics. It's Opeth's songwriting at it's lowest, IMO.

I'm feeling angry.

Killtacular 11-21-2005 08:54 PM

GR seems to just chuck in heavy and light parts willy nilly without much thought behind them. Then there's those full on light songs that are no where near what I love from Damnation. It's just disappointment in disc form.

I've been disappointed a lot this year. Perhaps my standards are too high. Octavarium was crap, GR was alright, and Takk was barely above average.

Meh.

Toaster 11-21-2005 08:57 PM

At least we have This Godless Endeavour to put on. And BTBAM. And Nile.

Come on, it hasn't been such a bad year.

Kage 11-21-2005 09:07 PM

It's been a great year for me. GR, Pelican, Arcturus, Porcupine Tree, Dredg, Sigur Ros, Red Sparrowes...the list goes on.

Hells Bells 11-21-2005 09:07 PM

Annihlation of the Wicked and This Godless Endeavor, Hellfire Club, The System Has Failed, Majestic, and Sideshow Symphonies are all great reasons to be happy about this year, and GR is just another plus for me. Opeth's sound evolved with GR, and that's always hard to get used to when you really liked the band's older style.

Yeah, seriously. Ghost Reveries is one of the most amazing albums I've ever listened to...opeth or not. I like their others too (I own BWP and Damnation...heard others). I like GR just as much though. I think some of you need to take another listen and set your standards a little lower.

There always seems to be this attitude about any band: one album is good (or "old stuff is good") and new album ("new stuff") sucks. Well...I don't understand. Opeth is one example...GR is just so amazing, I can listen to it over and over again and marvel at the soft parts and everything. Another example is In Flames...at first Soundtrack to your Escape sounded pretty bad...but after actually listening to it, it became one of my favorite albums.

sheesh

I didn't really like Alaska. Annihation is pretty good, though.

Those are some of my favorites. :upset:
Annihation is pretty good, though.
You finally heard the rest of it?

I'm not going to join in on the Ghost Reveries bashing, I still enjoy the album, buts nowhere near the others for me. I just don't get the same feeling from it...

Kage 11-21-2005 10:25 PM

I confess that I still have not heard all of Damnation. I really want to, though. Deliverance is a good album, but feels incomplete to me...maybe because I need to hear the second part of it. :)

Darkness 11-21-2005 10:27 PM

I can send you either, if you want. Or just the parts you don't have.

Kage 11-21-2005 10:30 PM

What I meant by the second part of Deliverance was Damnation. :p Deliverance was the first Opeth album I bought, and I was kind of turned off of them by it, honestly. Then I heard Blackwater Park and rushed out to the store to buy it, and was hooked.

But, yeah, if you could send me Damnation, that'd be awesome.

Darkness 11-21-2005 10:32 PM

You have Soulseek? Or should I bundle it up into winzip for you then upload to yousendit?

Kage 11-21-2005 10:34 PM

Yeah, I've got slsk.

Whoa...chill
If people want to lower their standards, that's their problem, but I personally don't think you need to lower your standards to appreciate GR...

Kage 11-21-2005 11:21 PM

I went into the room and no one else was in there. Wtf.

penelope_weird_hands 11-22-2005 12:14 AM

i don't understand how anyone couldn't really get into ghost reveries.
it is a great album, very versatile and sonically balanced.
the riffs, acoustic parts and songwriting in general is fvucking fantastic and vocally he is supreme in comparison to the other albums..(IMO)

though it seems i've noticed i'm quite the opposite of some of the more oldschool (for lack of a better word) fans on the forum here..
i find the older albums harder to listen to than deliverance, ghost reveries, damnation and blackwater park.
for what it's worth i think i need to listen to orchid, morningrise and my arms, your hearse alot more.. i believe that for some bands/albums i don't hear the same thing as fans of the bands/albums hear.. if you know what i mean..?
it's hard to explain.
sometimes it just takes more listens to appreciate some music holistically.

but it shouldn't matter what era of opeth one likes better than another..to each their own as the cliche goes.. and the fact remains that opeth has been and is still unbelievably good since its existence and most importantly.. continues to develop and evolve.

definately a band with something for everyone to enjoy.
which is why we all lub teh opeth. ;)
