this dying soul and honor thy father are my least favorites on that album.
i actually think as i am is brilliant, because it shows dream theater is somewhat capable fo writing a standard metal song, instead of dragging it on and on and on. although i guess 7 minutes is quite lengthy. but every second rocks. |
I dont know about In the Name of God but i agree that Honor Thy Father goes for a tad too long... probably the one blemish on awesome album...

Yep. Very straight forward song, but still has that 'edge' to it. |

Intro - verse - chorus - verse - chorus - solos - chorus to be precise. I'm probably wrong :upset: |
I love every second of ToT and 8V, bar about 40, that being the rap-ish bit in Honor Thy Father.
Two of my fave albums ever  . |
James' rapping leaves much to be desired, I think they shouldn't have put that in.
Or they could've at least had someone else do it. |
the thing about sacrificed sons for me was at first wen i listened to it i only thot it was ok but then after 3 times of playback i realized how great it was..... does this happen to anyone who listens to dream theater? theres so much u dont catch on too the first couple times because the songs go many different directions and are so long

Yeah a lot of people are like that. It took me forever to get into Awake.:thumb: |
how about the 24 min song thats a tad to much dont u think?
|
they had a 45 min song on that cd?
u sure cause i got that cd and theres no 45 min song trust me |
The 40 minute song is the second disc of 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence, but it was split up into 8 (I think) parts.

ok gotcha cause liek late last year i got really into them and bought like 4 of their cds lol i didnt but the 6 degrees one though lol |
the entire second disk of six degrees is one song.
just broken up into sections. every listen through a dream theater song reveals new intricacies you will have missed. even after almost a year of continuous listening, i'm still finding new things. it helps to turn down the bass sometimes to hear other lines here and there :] music souds different from your iPod, CD player, home system, car stereo |
how about the 24 min song thats a tad to much dont u think?
No way man. It's actually quite awesome. A Change of Seasons pretty much defines Progmetal. Octavarium is just plain awesome.:thumb: |
ok raise your hand if u can sit through one song for 24 min and not lose interest
i could do it if i tried but thats very hard cause ppl think i'm like an a.d.d kid and i'm startign to see why.....is that bad? |
I would much prefer to listen to one amazing 24 minute song, than several average length songs. Its not like these songs are just the same riffs being repeated over and over, they are.. well, progressive.

I can sit for that time, with A Change of Seasons, Octavarium (just the intro gets me bored), The Odyssey-Symphony X, and The Divine Wings of Tragedy-Symphony X.
Well, depends on the song, many prog songs over 20 minutes are great because they have a lot of versatility. I do listen long songs. |

Octavarium is one of my favorite songs. I can listen to it multiple times in a row without getting bored and its awesome. To be honest, I don't agree at all with people who say the intro is 'boring.' I think its an awesome intro, I dunno whether its the awesome pads or the echoy guitar, but it defiantely rocks.
|
Octavarium is a really great song.
I love how this thread has picked up. For awhile it was only a handful of regular posters in this thread. |

I think its Jordan playing a pedal steel guitar. |
I can sit and listen to all 24 minutes of Octavarium 5 or 6 times a day.
It's so damn good. Most of my alltime favourite songs are at least 7 minutes +. |
I love long songs.
it's just more yummines, if you know what I mean. I don't want an awesome song to end so fast. np: DT - The Root Of all Evil (I haven't listened to 8vm for ages :-/ ) |
length isn't a factor for me, but with the abundance of short clips of music here and there, something to just listen to and enjoy for a longER period of time is nice.
i like octavarium as a whole more than ACOS, because i think it sounds much more refined. but "another world" in ACOS easily takes the cake for "best section." |
I can easily sit through them simply because they're so varied.
|
Same here. It's not like they're using the same riff over and over.
