I still haven't given any albums after Burnt Offerings much of a chance. I like them, but I can't get the same listen and/or feeling out of them as Burnt Offerings and previous. :(
And the most recent stuff (the last 4 albums) is too slow....and the riffage isn't as diverse, nor does it change as frequently. |
I honestly still can't get into Iced Earth though. :/
Though now that I think about it, I haven't given them a listen in a while now. *finds some Iced Earth*
Reccomended: Ghost of Freedom (its a slow song, but if you want something faster, skip this) Greenface Violate The Coming Curse Iced Earth (Very power metallish) Vengence is Mine |
Well I'm a big Maiden fan, and I still don't really like Iced Earth.
Maiden are amazing live, though.
Well, granted they are two different bands (Iced Earth is waaaaaaaaay more heavy, and faster), but I think it was that whole genre of speed metal and power that made me like both at the same time. |
half-way too stars guys, just need that last half way push

So. I'm going to buy both Mastodon albums because they are awesome. I think I'll write a review now.

Right, in the interests of broadening my horizons, would someone recomend me some good starting places for death metal?

Personally, I coudln't get into death metal until I got into Melodic Death Metal, so IMO thats where you should start. If you really want death metal reccomendations, i'd be glad to give you some, but I can garuntee you won't like it. |
thx fast fingers, you rock!

Start with stuff like At the Gates, then move up into slightly harder stuff like Vehemence and Arghoslent, and from there brutal and technical will soon come to you. But for some death metal recommendations anyway: Kataklysm, Cryptopsy, Behemoth, Death, Iniquity, and Lykathea Aflame. Those bands have no real relation to each other aside from being great. |

i second that, and it is on my christmas cd list. my bro bought me S+M for christmas, i hope it lives up to the hype. |

Does everyone start off with melodic death metal and move on from there?
I was somewhat thrown into the deep end by coypu, when the death heads thread was first starting, and I came out loving it. So it's not absolutely necessary to start at the melodic end. |
any starting place would be appreciated :)
No problem :) Melodic Death: At The Gates * Arsis * Dark Tranquility * In Flames (Earlier In Flames though) Soilwork * (Earlier though) The Black Dahlia Murder * God Forbid (they aren't really metalcore anymore) Into Eternity Vehemence Arch Enemy Death Metal: Nile * Behemoth* Cryptopsy Kataklysm Death * All Shall Perish * Morbid Angel * Opeth * means that they are the best ones in my opinion. |
So it's not absolutely necessary to start at the melodic end.
Of course not. I was talking personally. I mean, if you like it from the start, hey, thats great, but I'm saying 9 out of 10 times, you will probably need to start slow then move up from there.
|
Ramsey you have such sexy death metal taste. :-*

I started with Cryptopsy and Nile, and when I would try to listen to Melodic death, it came off as annoying, and I just couldn't listen to it. Not until now can I somewhat respect melodic death, as I am starting to listen to it more and more. |
Thanks for the help everyone!
|
The hardest thing for me to get into was the growling. That took some time... This is where Lord worm helped out. Once you get used to him, you can pretty much listen to anything.

hold the fone...
OPETH ARE DEATH?! I LIKE OPETH! |
Yes sir. Progressive death.

Yeah, I know. Just thought I'd point it out :) Good list by the way, though it looks like you should definitely check out Arghoslent. They'd be at the top of my melodic death recommendations. |
Yes sir. Progressive death.
****, thats great! maybe all is not lost. Have you guys seen the thread on moby and a perfect circle? |
Arghoslent could totally pull Running Wild-esque pirate metal on us if they wanted too. That first riff in Flogging the Cargo is a fucking pirate metal riff. :P
Arsis gets the top spot for my melodic death pick. |
arsis are definatly good.
