I was alerted (by my English teacher, who likes to announce famous birthdays) that it is Gershwin's birth anniversary today. In honor, I dug out a vinyl record I've got of Bernstein conducting and playing piano with the New York Philharmonic in performances of Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris.

What great stuff.

I had a few CDs arrive today, so they will be my listening material - amidst studying for two tests tomorrow

Low - The Curtain Hits the Cast
Wolf Parade - Apologies To The Queen Mary
Susanna and the Magical Orchestra - List of Lights and Buoys

asymm 09-26-2005 04:22 PM

Yeah, definitely check them out. They've been leaked for a while now, so I'm only just 'officially' getting their release. I'm not sure I'd be as quite as hugely positive as all the publications have been, but it is a truly excellent record in the Arcade Fire/Modest Mouse vein. It's not an album to change your mind on this style of sound, but it's a great refinement for those who already enjoy it.

Anxious 09-26-2005 04:29 PM

Arab on Radar.
Such a great band.

Sam 09-26-2005 04:37 PM

Fishbone. Which is ironic, because I was bitching at my brother earlier about how all the ska he listens to sounds the same and is starting to hurt my braine.

Even though Fishbone isn't every other ska band. It's still weird.

Anxious 09-26-2005 04:48 PM

I dont like most ska.

Sam 09-26-2005 04:53 PM

I don't like ska-punk. It irritates me.

Why do you say "birth anniversary" instead of "birthday?" Is it because he's dead?
It's because I had just used the word "birthday" a few words back, and I wanted it to sound more fluent.
