I like the low ones more to...
|
Well, now with the release of Ghost Reveries and since they're on a bigger, well known label, It wouldn't surprise me to see any Opeth album in a larger music store. I couldn't find anything a few years ago though, I had to order all of my Opeth albums except Orchid. Amazingly, FYE actually had that album in stock.
N.P. The Pursuit Of Vikings ~ Amon Amarth
FYE and Tower already had numerous Opeth albums even before GR came out or they signed to Roadrunner. |

In addition to that, Best Buy and CD Warehouse were stocking every Opeth CD long before GR was even written. I found Orchid, Morningrise, MAYH, BWP, and D/D there every time. The only one that was not usually there was Still Life. |
My record store here has every Opeth c.d and has each of them in good sized quantities. Now, Opeth are nowhere near as big in New Zealand as they are in the U.S (assuming the majority of yourselves live there). At the entrance of the store they usually have the months biggest sellers and Ghost Reveries made it there. The shop is called Real Groovy and almost every metal c.d imaginable is there.
I've always enjoyed Mikael Stanne's growls. He can switch between a high pitch and low pitch without much fuss. Whereas Mike Akerfeldt focuses on the low register these days, Stanne can seemingly do both. |

What is everyones opinion on high/low pitched growls? I've been listening to Morningrise a bunch lately and I think I might be starting to like the high pitched ones more. They sound so evil.
High is cool sometimes, but to me it gets annoying if high screams constant throughout songs. On the other hand, many vocalists can sound dumb when they try to do low pitched vocals. Both are good in moderation. |
I only like higher ones when there done really well, such as In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. I'm not the biggest fan of Mikeals higher one, but his lower one can't be beaten, IMO.

Yeah I know, but the FYE in my town is 90% Rap/Hip-Hop. They never have anything I need there. They used to carry a lot of great artists, especially Death Metal, but ever since FYE took over Musicland...it took a major plunge. N.P. The Seventh Sunray Enlights My Pathway ~ Fragments Of Unbecoming |

Opeth is the only death metal band I listen to, so I've never heard any growls from other bands. How do they compare to Akerfeldt's? |

We slowed down Lost To Apathy as a joke today... My god. The track slowed down proves there really IS a Satan. His voice is unbefreakinglievable on the slowed one. Spinal Pap, Stanne's death growls aren't as good as Akefeldt's (a bit higher), but his midrange voice is unsurpassed. |

I don't think it's really the pitch of his vocals, they are high, but I would never think of them as high pitch. I don't think the recording equipment in that time was prepared for Opeth, but I love it that way! He did scream a lot more though on previous albums as opposed to later. He has developed a nice growl in the procedure. But his screams are really inticing. That's one of the main reasons why I like Morningrise to much. It didn't go through a number of procedures in the studio. They just went in there, and recorded what they wrote. That album is so raw, it's beautiful. |
I just learned Roads and it's his most basic, straight-foward song he's written. but he makes it sound so awesome.

What makes you think that he subjects his vocals to a lot of "procedures" today? He sings every vocal live the same way that he does in the studio. |

Well, I didn't really mean that they were high pitch, just higher than his low ones, like Morningrise growls compared to BWP growls. /loves Morningrise |

He didn't write it. He just sung on it. The keyboardist from Type O negative wrote it. |

His new vocals suck. |
His vocals are awesome. The scream on Ruin is insane. Where he goes from high to low, then back up again.
Hey Scruples where in TN do you live?
Middle Tennessee. Culleoka to be exact. It's in the middle of nowhere. I'm like an hour from Nashville. |

I sorta like his new vocals though... Lack of a different song structure puts me off from LOG. Their music sounds WAY too similar for me. Stanne kicks Randy's *** in more ways than I can count. |
Ugh I hate LOG... I saw them at sounds of the underground (was there for Opeth..) and me and my bassist walked out laughing.. it was terrible.

I saw them live in Minnesota, he sounded great. He actually sounded just like the songs on the album. He's a very talented vocalist. If you actually read what I typed, you will know I was talking about the recording equipment. And yes, he screams more on previous albums, and growls more on the latter. Sometimes I wonder if you even listen to Opeth.
Well, I didn't really mean that they were high pitch, just higher than his low ones, like Morningrise growls compared to BWP growls. /loves Morningrise
Yes, he does scream a lot more on Morningrise compared to Blackwater Park. Blackwater Park has more growling to it. I know what you meant by higher pitch. They didn't have decent recording quality until Still Life. My Arms, Your Hearse sounded decent, quality-wise, but Still Life was so much more Crisp, and Driving. |

Yeah. Chris Adler's a decent drummer, but I can't stand their music. |
I don't know why, but I've always liked LOG, even with my hatred for repetition. The fact that they aren't melodic helps.

Who is this Stanne guy?
|
Morningrise > other opeth albums imo
Who is this Stanne guy?
Cool, I'm in Chattanooga, in the southeast corner of TN.
Ugh I hate LOG... I saw them at sounds of the underground (was there for Opeth..) and me and my bassist walked out laughing.. it was terrible.
I also despise LOG, the lack of variety really puts me off. |
Morningrise > other opeth albums imo
I can't really decide which i think is their best but Morningrise is way up there on my list too. Whats your favorite track on Morningrise? |
