Deconstruction 01-22-2006 02:13 PM

Anyone?

Poofy 666 01-22-2006 02:15 PM
Anyone know what tunings Sunn use? Or Earth?
Someone said it was at least below A but im not very good at tunings...

Stoic 01-22-2006 02:16 PM
Well that's one thing that MA's just wrong about, then. If you're being lazy, then yeah, you can lump the two together; they're both built out of the same roots, and both really slow and really heavy. But really there's huge differences all over the place; explaining them in words would take quite a while, I think, but if you can listen to twenty minutes of fuzz from Sunn or Earth and say it sounds the same as a song like Candlemass - Solitude..you're insane.
an the other approach is stoner, right?

I asked this in the Radiohead in A&I but it never got answered and I don't want to come off as an annoying prick so I'll ask here. Has anyone seen the Radiohead performance on Showtime a while back that was in Glastonbury or some big festival? And is it available online?

Shattered_Future 01-22-2006 02:21 PM
an the other approach is stoner, right?
Yea, there's doom, which is what 'Tender explained (actually, he explained drone doom), which is basically slow, depressing metal.

And then stoner metal is also slow, but more blues based, whereas doom is minor based.

Lord Abortion 01-22-2006 02:21 PM

I haven't, but would like to...I haven't seen a Radiohead live thing ever. What's the normal live staples they play?

Stoic 01-22-2006 02:27 PM

excellent! I think I pretty much understand all metal sub-genres. God, there was even a time when I couldnt tell the difference between death and black :p

Hell, I didn't even know there were genres aside from "metal" at one point.
Hell, I didn't even know there were genres aside from "metal" at one point.
my reaction when I first heard metallica's black album:
"oh my god, this album sucks! Maybe because it's not metal, it's t(h)rash"

Learning the sub-genres seems like a miracle now. I hardly remember the proccess. The scariest part was the different styles of a genre (eg technical death, brutal death, old school death, melodic death etc etc) :amaze:
my reaction when I first heard metallica's black album:

That wasn't my reaction when I first heard the album, but it sure as hell is now.

Everything bar Of wolf and man and Sad but true on there I can't stand anymore. I got sick of enter sandman a long long time ago.

Tyler 01-22-2006 03:01 PM

I kind of hate Metallica.
That's it, really.

NP: Into Eternity - Splintered Visions

Bartender 01-22-2006 03:06 PM

I still like the black album..about as much as I did when I first heard it, really. I never loved it much, so I've had no love to lose over time.
an the other approach is stoner, right?
Not sure what you mean by 'the other approach", but what Shattered_Future said makes some sense.

yup. Even as a newbie I could tell how much the black album sucked :p

/the above statement is an opnion and it doesnt mean to offend anyone

Lord Abortion 01-22-2006 03:10 PM

Yeah, my lack of respect for post-AJFA Metallica has increased with my development of a music taste.

Although, I can safely say that singing Sad but true with a drunk girl's hands on your crotch and singing along too, is a good experience.

Permanent Solution 01-22-2006 03:11 PM

The Black Album is a good mainstream Metal album I think. Definitely not their best material by a long shot, but I still listen to it every once in awhile, though sadly I out-played Metallica a bit when I was younger.

Bartender 01-22-2006 03:12 PM

AFJA's not much better.

Arucard 01-22-2006 03:16 PM

I'd have to agree. I personally only think that KEA and RTL are good, i don't like any other 'tallica.

Kingofdudes 01-22-2006 03:28 PM
AFJA's not much better.
None of their albums are really. I think RTL is the only decent thing they have ever done.

Lord Abortion 01-22-2006 03:28 PM
I'd have to agree. I personally only think that KEA and RTL are good, i don't like any other 'tallica.
That's pretty much my stance, although I would pick maybe six or seven songs from later albums I like, the rest sucks.

Bartender 01-22-2006 03:31 PM

Well I wouldn't agree with that (EDIT: was directed at Joe and Gilmour) . First three are fine, but then everything after that only seems to have a couple of good songs.

Anyway. I'm watching Commando. Surely Bennett is the gayest character in the history of film.

Kingofdudes 01-22-2006 03:32 PM

One of my biggest pet peeves: people trying to defend Saint Anger. It is a terrible album fanboys, live with it.

Lord Abortion 01-22-2006 03:33 PM

Shoot me again=the only bearable track on that, if only because of the fantasy we all have of shooting James Hetfield.

I heard that this year they're suppose to release an album similar to the style of the Black album and AJFA.. hopefully it'll be a lot better than St. Anger

i'm not sticking up for St. Anger because i don't even have it but i like the title track. it'll be much better if they go back to doing music similar to AJFA and the Black Album, i know some people don't them but i like those 2 albums.

the2stranger 01-22-2006 03:59 PM

ugh
Metallica discussion

I never liked them, aside from a few songs which are ok.

np: My Dying Bride - The Scarlet Garden

meh I think they should just give up. They try something new and it sucks, and what good is a clone of an old album?

Meh, there are so many 'tallica fan boys, they can't really afford to give up.

They've got their money, so I don't see why they cant't :p

Yes, I don't like Metallica
i'm not sticking up for St. Anger because i don't even have it but i like the title track.
The title track would have been half-decent, if it had been about half as long as it was. Seven minutes was just far too long, especially since the second half was basically the first, repeated.

My thoughts exacly on that song...it gets repetitive. But i honestly dont think ive listened to every song on that album. So i dont go ahead bashing it.

I havnt heard much, if anything, after the Black Album. Well except for live stuff.

I hate them. I've really only heard a song or two, but it wasnt even music, it just sounded like a bowel movement.
