for a custom made P or J copy, you'll stand a decent chance of getting some money back for it. but for anything specialised... nope. my Shuker will never sell for anywhere near what it is worth if i ever decide to sell it because it's completely unique to me

Cramboli 10-13-2009 04:30 PM

Unless you catch that .05% chance that someone else has the same style as you...

Lucky for me, unpaired 8-strings are extremely difficult to come by, so it's in a relatively unique market, which is the only thing that will keep it around the 60-70% (of original value) mark. It also makes it that much harder to sell.

fatbandit 10-13-2009 04:43 PM

Well.

You only need one person who decides they need it more than life itself.

So good luck :)

BUY MY PEDALS

BenJammin 10-13-2009 04:46 PM
Pretty much. Even on TalkBass, I might only be able to get $2k for it, but that would be a stretch, methinks. $1700 and I'd be satisfied.
$2k For your JC?

Fat fucking luck dude.

I've seen stranger things happen. I wouldn't expect to make that off of it, but I wouldn't let it go for less than $1700.
The materials alone cost around $1700 three years ago.

Cost =/= value. How do you figure the materials cost $1700?

If you can sell it for $1700, I'd be impressed. In your position, given that it's one of JC's earlier builds and you've admitted some fault with it in the past IIRC, not to mention it's from a total unknown who doesn't have a huge reputation... maybe $1500.

Cramboli 10-13-2009 07:41 PM

unless he comes across some rich kid who's like OMG THAT'S SO CULE YAH I WANT IT...

The Brad 10-13-2009 08:36 PM

I do ca-ca-cocaine!

funkyhoney 10-13-2009 08:38 PM

I do dealing with drama I have no control over. Hergh.

funkyhoney 10-13-2009 09:19 PM

First time I've been happy to go to work in a long while. Now THAT is a depressing thought.

Had to have custom pickups wound, it was an expensive wood top, the 8 individual bridges, 8 tuners, preamp, green pearl knobs, as well as other wood costs...it added up. :upset:

I really like the way it sounds and plays, though, and the setup is almost perfect. I found a new guitar shop that I'm going to have set it up and re-do the wiring (I'm very sloppy with a soldering iron).

I might eventually have the inlay touched up (and added on to), but it's definitely come a long way from the (unfortunately) poorly finished product. It seems as though he's really stepped it up in the building, though, and, in a few years if I want another custom, I might just got to him again.

Epidemechanical 10-13-2009 10:04 PM

just had my first night of work at this place, got certified to operate the forklifts

tomorrow i get my own lift and i get to start doing orders. oh my god its gonna be a ****fest. kind of excited though it'll be fun

funkyhoney 10-13-2009 10:39 PM

I never get to drive the forklift at work. I just get to unload all the pallets :(

gaslight 10-13-2009 11:36 PM

Where are the pics of this freaky 8 string?

Most of the work you've put into it doesn't add on to the value of the instrument.

I think you'd be stupid to get another JC after this one. There are so many other luthiers out there, many of them very close to Jared's prices, who already have established a good reputation in build quality and other things, versus a kid who has built, what, 20 instruments?

He does do some very good work.

Epidemechanical 10-14-2009 07:10 AM

why would you put the bass near water like that lol

funkyhoney 10-14-2009 07:20 AM

Water is good for wood.

gaslight 10-14-2009 07:23 AM

Is JC the guy who was a member here? Or was that Winters Custom or something.

Either way I hope that's a photoshop of it near the water.

funkyhoney 10-14-2009 07:24 AM

JC was a member here, Winters' guy was a moron generally who claimed he could make basses/guitars.

They're all take at the same shot, so probably is a photoshop.

gaslight 10-14-2009 07:26 AM

It's a pretty sweet looking bass considering it's an 8 string.

Interesting designs.

BenJammin 10-14-2009 07:32 AM

Mostly his designs are all ripped from someone else, or are customer-submitted.

funkyhoney 10-14-2009 07:44 AM

That 4 string fretless appeals to me in a strange way.

gaslight 10-14-2009 07:55 AM

I'd be interested to see how much that sound hole adds to it.

funkyhoney 10-14-2009 08:06 AM

I'm interested to see how that rainbow sounds.

gaslight 10-14-2009 08:07 AM

It's very stripey. That must add a shitload to the price having so many sandwichings.
