They ruined a lot of things. |
Jeusus Christ, i just downloaded Sing the sorrow, and it's the first time i've heard AFI, and i love it !
It *can* work though. We're just so set in our current ways that we're convinced it's impossible. Anything that's supposedly so utopian can't possibly be realistic, right? That's what we're led to believe, but it's not true. In a Socialistic/Communistic society, greed that would drive destruction down the throat of the system would not be tolerated. The laws that are set forth are obeyed or a punishment is carried out. There wouldn't be the lazy prison system that we have now. People would learn to work together and be appreciative of each other's efforts, or those that don't and try to take advantage would be punished.
The problem is, human beings are intrinsically selfish creatures. The natural human instinct is to look out for number one, and with enough people doing that, the entire system falls to pieces. It can work until you take into account the human psyche. |
...holy crap, who'da thunk it? The pop-punk community thread talks politics!

I really don't believe that's true. Humans are not naturally selfish or there would be no such thing as generosity. People become selfish due to the environment that they're raised in, and changing that environment can change the outcome of the people. In a caring community, you will have caring people. Will there be the occassional person that tries to raise themselves above everyone else? Of course, but like I said before, that's what the laws are for. |

You can say that, but generosity is a funny thing - I'd happily give a friend a couple of quid for a burger on a night out or something like that, but I wouldn't lend him my car, because that car is mine. The small things don't bother me too much - it's the bigger things that people would have problems with. I know it's a funny example, but I think the point is there somewhere.

That's just an example of the environmental and materialistic greed that's been hammered into our brains. I've broken that pattern in myself and opened myself to the mindset that's necessary for a successful Socialist/Communist society, but a big majority of Americans/Brits/anyone Western, aren't willing to do that. They're convinced that items like cars and computers and houses are life-changingly important when the truth is, they're not. I love the idea that in a Socialist society there is no such thing as large-scale private property. Yes you can have whatever objects you purchase inside your home, but everyone lives in the same type of housing, everyone pays the same amount of rent on everything, and you're not allowed to have anything more than your neighbor has because you DON'T need it. When people can learn to give up the things that equate their social superiority, they can function better as a single-class society. |
and you're not allowed to have anything more than your neighbor has because you DON'T need it.
That is the only piece I don't like about communism - it feels almost facist - you are not allowed to possess anything that could make you individual. I like the idea of everyone being equal, but I feel that they should be free to do as they will with that equality. |

Individuality leads to social-superiority. People get it into their minds that because they're an individual, they deserve to be held higher than someone else. I don't approve of that. |
I go away for one day, and look at the change in this thread!

I know, i didnt post all night last night, i look back, and theres post, that are more then 5 lines long :(

to that extent, I believe you're right Ren. It's like the old saying: "Be unique, just like everyone else - it won't make you any better"
In fact, I'm not sure it's that old, but I've seen it about a couple of places. I like the aspects of communism that encourage everyone to be equal, and that no-one should be entitled to any more than their peers. The bit I don't like is where it tells people that they are not allowed any more than their neighbours, even if they have worked for it. |

Obviously if you have the money, you can get a new car or something, but it's going to be state manufactured so it's not like it's something no one else could ever afford. It's just something that you arranged your own budget for. Communism and Socialism require a lot of respect between people, and since there is no designated police force or governing force involved, the community really has to support itself and each other. That's what Communism is anyway. Socialism is the bridge between here and there where we'd still have traces of the old bourgeoise society mixed with the new society until we could force those traces out. |
