I've seen the video of 'the writing of TOT' and like, they finish writing just like that. Suddenly Mike just goes "that's it"..... "we've finished. We've finished writing. Hmmm."

Took them almost exactly 3 weeks or something.

Element of LED 435 05-13-2006 07:13 AM

anyone know a story behind the symbol for dream theater? such as who made it, why they chose that or any info?

Jev 05-13-2006 07:19 AM

Charlie Domonici (sp?) made it.
It was the Majesty symbol but when DT changed their name they kept it.

Lord Abortion 05-13-2006 07:20 AM

Yeah, it still fits...it's seems made of D M T...

It's based on a mark used by Mary Queen of Scots. They decided to use it because it had a M in it (for Majesty).

It's a cool mark.

I wonder if we could get Portnoy to join us on the Stonerbus?
Haha, I got that impression of him tbh..

Shattered_Future 05-13-2006 10:19 AM

I just realized how good Endless Sacrifice is...aside from the chorus riff. :p

the2stranger 05-13-2006 10:22 AM

Yhe whole song is sweet, actually the whole cd, probably my 2nd or 3th favorite DT cd.
But nothing can top Images & Words

Shattered_Future 05-13-2006 10:23 AM

I should probably listen to that...this guitarist in my theory class is bitching about me listening to it because I can't get past Pull Me Under. I CAN'T STAND IT!

Jev 05-13-2006 10:27 AM

Try Take the Time, that's my favourite.

ThunderBass 05-13-2006 10:27 AM

you CANT stand 'Pull Me Under'? although ill admit that I&W is probably the least favourite of their albums that i own... but it still rules nonetheless... but back on topic... 'Pull Me Under' is an awesome song... what faults do you find in it?

the2stranger 05-13-2006 10:29 AM

it might be the repetitiveness (sp?)
But I think it's an awesome song really.
Only the ending it's still so annoying, esp. when airdrumming to it, and all of the sudden it stops and I feel stupid :(

nowitzki 05-13-2006 10:30 AM

Metropolis Pt. 1, Learning to Live and Take the Time are all better songs than PMU from I&W.

the2stranger 05-13-2006 10:33 AM

^
True, but that doesn't mean PMU is bad in any way.
But the three songs you mentioned are the best of the album.
Under A Glass Moon gets an honourable mention too.

Jev 05-13-2006 10:35 AM

SF, I didn't like PMU much myself when I first heard it either. Now I love it.

ThunderBass 05-13-2006 10:36 AM

Dont get me wrong, i think the whole album is great... but yeah my top three (in no real order) 'Pull Me Under', 'Metropolis', 'Wait for Sleep'(yes, im strange)... but the sudden ending in 'Pull Me Under' has a meaning...

the2stranger 05-13-2006 10:40 AM

I know about the meaning of PMU, but still it's annoying.

It would be annoying to die all of the sudden, but to have a track stop all of the sudden is not cool as well :p

Lord Abortion 05-13-2006 10:43 AM

Surrounded and Learning to live are my favourites.

Wait for sleep is magnificent.

ThunderBass 05-13-2006 10:44 AM

Ill admit it caught me by surprise the first time... but yeah... you get used to it... just learn the intro to 'Another Day', that way you get to keep going after it ends... :)

jpshortstuff 05-13-2006 10:48 AM

Take The Time seriously owns all on I&W, especially after the 2nd(?) chorus when theres all that crazy instrumental stuff + when JLB is all like: 'Oooo'.

Inkstar 05-13-2006 10:57 AM

I think SFAM is still my favourite DT album.

ThunderBass 05-13-2006 11:03 AM

SFAM and ToT are pretty even imo... they are both equal first position... however i do not own all their albums... yet... :)

Enlighten Me 05-13-2006 11:18 AM

IMO I&W is probably their best to date. PMU is sick, that's the first DT song i ever heard.
The intro is just... oooohh I can't explain it, I love it.
There is not one mediocre song on that album they are all superb.

Shattered_Future 05-13-2006 01:29 PM

I dunno...I don't like the riffing in it much, the acoustic part in the beginning pisses me off to no avail, and the chorus is extremely irritating.

its one of the few DT songs that has a chorus along with another day.... just the two that came to me

Endless Sacrifice, Home (its got a chorus melody, but the lyrics change), 6:00, Scarred, Lifting Shadows off a Dream, and tons of other DT songs actually have choruses...

I'm really digging Innocence Faded right now.

GenuineImitation 05-13-2006 08:31 PM

Im trying to learn Octavaium on the guitar. It really isnt a hard song to play, there is just soo much to remember.

well i mean alot of their songs dont either which i think is awesome because it wont get repetitive and plain which the chorus of pull me under(besides when they play it live) can get bland but i mean i just love DT no matter what they do
