I always thought that was my biggest weakness, being too straightforward in my writing.
You're morrissey-esque straightforwardness is nice but you also have some nice images as well. Most girls tend to think in words and so write songs in a "storytelling" style and forget to colour the song. Most guys think in images and don't get the point across enough. The few pieces i've read of yours are a nice mixture of both.

I nearly hit the floor when tojes said you were a girl. The thread that i was debating with you on in alt and indie gave no clues about your gender. I would never have guessed. Again, i'm not being sexist, it's just girls tend to argue in a different way because of the way that you think.

Disclaimer: I am in no way saying that you have a very masculine personality :p

Yeah, when I came across the existence of Mozzarela I never thought she was a... well. She. She isn't the kind of person who goes "Look at me I'm a girl" like most of "the pit" girls, and she never actually talks like a female... or at least... well. Everyone thinks that a person with stars and a lot of posts on the internet is a d00d who plays a lot of guitar.

Assumptions.

Hey, Tojes, here are some of the older songs I posted, as per your request. I thought I posted them earlier, though...

I liked the prog-thing. The intro is particularly great, considering it's Italian (Despite I don't speak it, I understand a lot of things as I'm pretty fluent in Spanish) And the rest of the songs are also amazing. Great writings. :thumb:

Thanks, mate. I'm usually not a huge fan of what I write, but I'm glad to hear that you like it.

I was right the crap about to mention that in the community thread, you beat me to it. :P

But yeah, it's horrible when someone can't take a critique, even for their own good. You could be a little more subtle about it, though. :p

But I love your reviews man, don't worry about that. He'll eventually die of herpes or something.

 I feel better; if I hadn't just finished two essays and an hour of math I would go critic... but my brain hurts :( . I made myself a promise to spend three hours on Friday and Saturday criticing.

spend some of that time critting a piece of my stuff man.. You give awesome crits, but I never see any of them on my stuff...

I'm sure i'll get round to a few of yours as well. You write some nice stuff but you always post when i'm in a not critiquing mood :p

Will be in crit mode tomorrow so if you have anything that needs looked at then i'd post it then :thumb:

haha.. it's all good. I'll try to get something up

wileycoyote 09-07-2005 02:06 PM

Ok, I can write songs, but I can never think of what to write about. Please give me topics.

Spectrum 09-07-2005 02:13 PM

Whatever you're feeling most strongly at the moment.

It may seem simplistic, but really, just write about whatever comes into your head. If you've been thinking about a certain topic a lot, write a song about it.

I hope that's good advice.

TojesDolan 09-07-2005 03:16 PM

It mostly depends on your mood, actually.

When I'm sad, I write happy songs. When I'm neutral (between happy/sad) I write pop songs, Or some into a more sad mood. If I'm angry, I feel like writing death-metal esque songs, or when I'm bored, I just write lines and lines of pretty much nothing.

Anyhow, It all depends on what you want to write, it's not that tough, you just gotta get soem focus and the rest is a piece of carrot cake, stuffed with cheese (not regular cheese, but that Cream cheese...) and strawberry toping... maybe a little cherry on the top, and a glass of milk to make it company.

Man, your posts get stranger and stranger every time, it must be the altitude from being above 3000 posts :p

SpectrumGuitarist: I'm wierd in that i can write a song on demand. It's easy for me to find inspiration because i can see it in the most obvious of things.

I guess what i'm trying to say is to stop looking for grand ideas for songs and focus on writing something based on a simple idea. Go pick up a newspaper and find a story about anything that takes your fancy. Write down the main points of the piece and then construct a song based on the themes of the article. Anything can be an inspiration, you just need the imagination to see it :thumb:

Actually I tend to be that strange in real life. Maybe it's just coming out on my internet personality. :D

And for instance, my current inspiration is writing a sonet, with the Petrarchan structure: (abba abba cde cde),so the subject won't be that important, but how I will write what I want.

I think people on MX get a wierder side of my personality considering it's usually such an unnatural hour i'm online at.

I think i might try out your idea, just to see if i can pull it off.

Oh yeah, in the lyrical challenge thread, how in-depth do crits have to be? I'd do all of them as-per my usual style but i don't want to do it just to realise that everyone else has done a two line and ratings type thing

You don't have crit at all just vote on whats your favourite down to the worst. Only have to crit if someone asks but it's always polite and nice to critique someone else's work in LC because it benefits both people in the long run. :)

Sloth 09-08-2005 09:13 AM

What do you all think about possibly starting a sub-section to this writing forum for short stories? It wouldn't be anything big, just like the Lyrics Challenge but it's strictly for our short stories. It would have the same idea as the standard S&L forums, read each others stuff and give feedback.

Does that sound possible or should we leave that to other forums somewhere out there?

OMG. YOu just hit my nail.

The thing I loeve the most besides songwriting, is well... writing stories. I'd love to, let's make a petition, I'd do it. :thumb:

But first ask Burt, He is the one who is most of the times against stuff. Maybe he doesn't like the idea or something.

pixiesfanyo 09-08-2005 04:04 PM

Make a thread.

And make it organized.
ER, you should really try and work on that idea! That is sweet,
Being called ER is weird. My name's David :)

I like the idea of leaving it as a poem. I don't think i could ever work it into a version that was singable(there is no way that that is a word :p ) without changing it.

Have you posted anything else in here recently? I haven't really been active in S&L since the last time you were on. Your thing was the first thing i've crit in the main forum in two weeks. You should feel priviledged :p

jade858907 09-08-2005 08:00 PM

Well, David, It is b/c you love me and I inspire you to become active in here. And yes, I do feel priviledged. All poems can become songs, rhythem is all you need, at least thats what I think... And no, I never come in the S&L, or the main forum. I have been ambushed with school and work, no time to my self. But my band is neglected so I felt like I needed to get into the swing of it again. lol

You think that you're just great don't you

I've been in the lyrical challenge thread and in the pit(the root of all evil, really brings out my inner troll). I haven't been in guitar as much as i usually am either. I've been at the rehearsal studios with my band* working on some songs. I'm waiting for my exam results to find out if i get into the second year of my degree. I really have no excuse for not critting, i've just not been in the mood. I'm sure i'll post a song soon again though.

I've found through experience that poetic lyrics are often hard to fit to music. The lyrics i write may be singable but not neccesarily with the music i write. Something i'll have to work on i guess.

How long have you been with your band? What do you do, apart from write?

*a drummer. My last band went wrong and the drummer and i are writing some songs before auditioning some other members.

jade858907 09-08-2005 08:28 PM

Well, my band is another chic that plays the guitar, and me. Yes, I like the simplisity of it. I sing and write, and she plays the guitar. It is purty sweet. I have talked to her about expanding the group, I have found decent people I like, but she is stuck on the 'Two Chics In A Band' deal. We havent been a 'band' to long, but it is fun, but time consuming and agrivating most of the time. I cant give enough time to it to make any decent songs or anything. But this weekend I am devoting myself to it! Lol,

And yes, 'You think that you're just great don't you ', I do... :D

Find another girl that plays violin and you're all set. I saw three girls with that setup at a local gig about a month ago and it was pretty good. With a stringed instrument like a violin you can get a "bigger" sound.

How long have you been writing for? I've only turned my hand to songwriting about a year ago. I've been to practice with my friend the drummer twice and we have four full songs and a half finished one. I'm going to have to work on singing and playing guitar at the same time because i think when the band is finalised we are going to have two singer/guitarists doing dual vocals and a bassist and drummer. I can play some simple keyboards as well if needed and i'm working at improving that as well.

I'd think up a smart comeback to your "being great" comment but it's far too late again. What time is it where you are?

jade858907 09-08-2005 08:52 PM

10:43 here, and I know another night will pass, and morning will come and I still wont get more than 3 hours of sleep... lol.
But about the writing, I have been writing for about 4 years, but really I havent written anything good until this past year. I was to immature and non-original. That would be sweet to have some one play the violin but I live in a redneck town and it was hard press to just get someone who even knew how to play the guitar! Any advice for me, you are more experianced in all of this than me, winging it is getting harder by the min. :p

It's 4am here. :upset:

How long have you been playng guitar?I don't know how it works in the US, but gigs are quite easy to come by here. Making sure your material is well rehearsed before gigging is a must. Practise until you can play every song you have perfectly without concentrating on it. As for band members, putting notices up in local music stores, advertising on internet forums and going to gigs and open mic nights are sure fire ways to find someone.

As for improving your writing, it just takes practice. I've only been writing songs for a year or so but it gets easier with time. Try to write a song every day and never throw away lyrics, even if you think they are awful. You can take one good line in a bad song and turn it into the basis for a great one. I've done it quite a few times.

Have you played in front of people yet? I'm yet to get my first gig, but only due to problems with members of my last band messing about too much. We should probably be up and gigging by the start of next year.

jade858907 09-08-2005 09:31 PM

Well, we havent played in front of anyone yet, and I know we arent ready for that not even close! lol, I think once we get the hang of each other we can start that. Where are you if not the US? I also believe that as well, that you should know your song and be able to play it with out concentrating on it before you start playing infront of people.

Well it is time to clock out for me. I have got to get something to eat and try and sleep. I will talk to you tomorrow tho alrighty? And I am Great! I keep you coming back, admit it! :D lol  j/k :p

It's a good film but a lot of people outside Scotland think that we all wear kilts because of it. And Mel Gibson's accent sucks.

Good afternoon, S&L. How's it going.

metaliq 09-09-2005 03:14 PM

You use full quotes for movies.

Hm. My band is playing tommorow for a birthday deal, haha. The guitarist is having his b-day party and Twig (our friend) is having it at the same time.

Twill be cool. We have two songs done.

Not bad for only being together a little over a month. Like 5-6 practices I bet we have had.

Wanna know how cool we are? We are on myspace. http://www.myspace.com/embracingyesterday

And we arent an emo band... although the cliche name would imply such a thing. I wasnt part of the naming process, and I dont really care. Jerks.

Yeah. I am doing college for my senior year. PSEO. Yeah bebeh.

Other than that, HEY.

Sloth 09-09-2005 03:35 PM

PSEO's definately an awesome idea... I did that last year.. Now I actually have to pay for college.....it sucks... I'm listening to that jam track you have, it's a pretty sweet piece.. It actually reminds me of a song me and a couple friends hammered out a couple years ago.. but we never went anywhere with it..
Hope the show goes good :thumb:

Hey Dolan...should we start that short story thread?
