i dont feel like lurking this whole thread so im just gona post my question, sorry if its already been addressed

im considering going with a 21' sweet ride, but it comes in brilliant and trad. finishes. is there any diffrence between the 2 cymbals besides physical appearance?

Murd_666 04-19-2005 02:06 PM

no i tried both types, the brilliant one is polished at high speed so it is very slightly thinner but the sound difference is unnoticeable....

bobby__johnny 04-19-2005 02:06 PM

well, the 2 you will try will sound quite different, as hey are different cymbals

but assuming you tried a cymbal in traditional, and then added the brilliant afterwards, it should sound a bit smoother and glassier (only i tiny bit mind you) and the actual pitch would drop a bit....not to any audible difference mind you.

so basically, to the human ear, they should sound the same. to an oscilliscope, you would be seeing a slight change.

my opinion, go Traditional when possible...its MUCH easier to keep clean.

Murd_666 04-19-2005 02:16 PM

^ I do agree, brilliant finishes pisses me off when you try and clean them^

Der Meister 04-19-2005 02:34 PM

traditional look better anyway :p

Brendan 04-19-2005 02:43 PM

alright guys thanks for the help. personally, im a brilliant finish kinda person but keeping them clean really is a bitch. i think you have to special order brilliant ones from musicians friend but guitar center has them stocked so when ive got the money it will be alot quicker and easier.

bobby__johnny 04-19-2005 04:51 PM

good man. in person. :thumb:

massmusic does Brilliant on request....they order the cymbal after you order anyway i think

Brendan 04-19-2005 05:01 PM

then thats definately not for me, waiting for stuff in the mail kills me. i start getting real impulsive and check the tracking alot...

bobby__johnny 04-19-2005 05:12 PM

2 weeks for my cymbal to come in. not that bad really, considering it went from Sabian (4 or so hour drive from my house), through customs, down to Arizona, back into customs, and then onto my house.

osiecki 04-20-2005 06:11 PM

im not quite sure how to describe the sound that i want, but i want metal cymbals. (preferably sabian)

crash, ride, hats, splash

bobby__johnny 04-20-2005 07:10 PM

i'm guessing bright and cutting?

AA Rock and AAX Metal models would suit you the best.

osiecki 04-20-2005 07:24 PM

awesome, thanks

Hey, I'm in need of a new crash cymbal, and I don't know what to get. I know the best way is to go try them out at the store, but how about some advise?
I'm in a fairly hard rock band and I need a cymbal that can cut through the music. I have an A series 18'' that sort of booms behind the music, I need a cymbal to stick through the song. Obviously an A custom would be nice, I looked at an A custom Fast crash, but that decay is so quick, I need something to stick around longer..... A custom Projection?
My cymbals are K custom ride 20'', 18'' A crash and 14'' A New Beat hats. What cymbal with the above qualities would go well with these other cymbals. Im looking mainly at Zildjians, or Paistes under $200, any advice will help.
thanks

I have a 17" A Custom Projection crash and love it, I play hard rock/metal/funk, its loud and powerful but very musical at the same time. I highly recommend one!

A custom projections are a great choice, if your store has them, check out 18" and 19" models as well as the 17", you might like abit more metal. I have the 18" and I love it, best thing I've ever bought.

bobby__johnny 04-21-2005 12:38 PM

i'd say a 16" or 17" A Rock Crash would cut perfectly.

The Haunt Of 04-21-2005 12:59 PM

thanks

groomits 04-21-2005 05:40 PM

anyone ever played/eared the vault artisan ride?? On the Sabian site they say it sounds really good but I'd like to ear others opinions...

bobby__johnny 04-21-2005 06:33 PM

by what they say on Sabian.com, my interpretation is that its their take on the K Constantinople ride that Zildjian makes.....take it from there i guess. i'll tell you when i try one for sure.

groomits 04-21-2005 06:37 PM

so it would be a kind of a jazz, soft music ride?

bobby__johnny 04-21-2005 06:42 PM

they make two weights. Medium and medium-thin (or thin?)

the medium would probably be suitable for most styles, but i think that they are oriented towards softer volumes.

Murd_666 04-21-2005 07:13 PM

I think it's thin and medium...

meizmatt 04-21-2005 07:17 PM

any one know any good rides that are versatile enough to go from metal to jazz and anything in between,
price is no issue
im not a brand whore so any suggestion is good

Murd_666 04-21-2005 07:40 PM

Try an AA medium/Medium-heavy Ride

i'd say an HHX Stage Ride....perhaps the Dry Ride would be a good choice too.

groomits 04-22-2005 03:23 PM

whats the main difference between the AA, AAX and HHX dry rides??

Ethan. 04-22-2005 03:59 PM

hey I am looking for a new cymbal pack $150 range. I have had cymbals that come with my kit for a year and I'm really sick of them. (I don't even have a ride cymbal.) I'm looking at the Meinl MCS pack. I don't have a job and I'm only 14, so money at my age is hard to come by. Does anybody have any Suggestions/Recomendations?

I played the set at my school for a little bit and got spoiled :) They have a paiste full crash, zildjian new beat hats, and sabian aa medium ride. I really don't like such a light ride though. That 17" paiste crash is sweet though (its also $200 ish at guitar center lol)

Any help would be deeply appreciated. thanks

bobby__johnny 04-23-2005 07:58 AM
whats the main difference between the AA, AAX and HHX dry rides??
the AA has a bigger bell than the AAX. i imagine it'd be a tad louder and brighter sounding too.

the AAX should have tighter definition though. i have one myself. a very shimmery tone to it when crashed that i dont particularly care for. but sticking sounds tight, bright and defined. the bell, though small, is bright and cutting.

the HHX should be similar in presence, but be darker sounding than both of the others.

Bobby do u recomend,
Sabian 18.5” Signature Explosion Crash
Sabian 14” AAX X-Celerator Hi-Hats
Sabian 10” AAX Splash
Sabian 21” AA Rock Ride
Zildjian A 16” Medium Crash
Zildjian Oriental 16” China Trash
Zildjian A 8” Splash
for a good rock setup??

bobby__johnny 04-23-2005 08:08 AM
Sabian 18.5” Signature Explosion Crash

when did you become Chad Smith? do you honestly like these cymbals on YOUR OWN?

they actually all seem fine, but that Chad Smith Crash is a waste of time. your better off with an 18" AA Medium for sure.
Zildjian A 16” Medium Crash
Zildjian Oriental 16” China Trash
Zildjian A 8” Splash
excellent choices there though.
