Ben Harper - Forever (not the live version)
Soft slow acoustic chords in the start, very nice so far (first 10 seconds). Ben starts singing and a there's some hand percussion joining in, it's all so sparse and minimal, and this is perfect. Guess I'll have to listen to the lyrics, they're nice and clear.. and because the music has now been fully described. There's a definite sad vibe in the song, he's been let down too many times by love. Clever use of the word "forever," he never says the word "love" in this song, but the intended meaning is so clear. The chorus is a bit happier, he's still hopeful that he can find a love that will last forever. The words are done well, evasive and effective, I really like it. There's a break from singing in the middle this guitar playing reminds me a bit of RHCP. Another verse and chorus follow.. and it's over too soon.. but I guess it couldn't go on for... ever? Very nice stuff, despite it being sad. I'm glad it was so soft because I'm a bit tired now. It felt really right, as sparse as it was. Maybe another verse or chorus and a little bit of lead guitar would have topped it off. The live version must sound pretty good. 9/10 ________________________ Custard - Ladies And Gentlemen - "contemporary indie pop" Broken Social Scene - Cranley's Gonna Make It - feel-good instrumental indie Darren Hanlon - Falling Aeroplanes - acoustic folk Xavier Rudd - Little Chief - acoustic folk |

Custard - "Ladies and Gentlemen"
Starts off pretty subdued, not diggin' so much on this intro. Oh that's a cheesy little drum fill. Oohh I kinda like this bit at about 0:52 seconds or so... do I hear some violin in the background? Should be more prominent. Goes into a kinda of little happy basic guitar solo, but I like how it gets backed up with the sax near to the end. At about 2:22, that violin seems really out of place, but it sort of steps back a bit later. Still not diggin' those same sappy chord changes over and over... "Bah Bah Bum Bum Bum" and we're done. The singer was pretty boring throughout. No energy whatsoever. Some people can pull off that type of singin' but he can't. The song itself was half-decent I suppose, but from that song I'd have no desire to check into any of their other releases. 5/10 The Paper Chase - "Said the Spider To the Fly" (try epitonic.com) Weezer - "I Just Threw Out The Love Of My Dreams" |
