Darkthrone - Where Cold Winds Blow

I've heard of Darkthrone before, but never heard them before... :)
So here goes it:

Darkthrone - Where Cold Winds Blow

The song starts out with some very fast drumming, and almost immeadiately the vocalist starts his screaming. A nice, thick growl. The drummer is also very impressive, but it's hard to hear the guitars. Then the lead guitar busts out with a nice riff over the top of the singer. Maybe it's just me straining to hear them, but from now on they seem much more audible... The melody is awesome, a dark, speeding riff that matches the drumming nicely.

After a while (this song goes for 7 minutes), the rhthym changes and slows down, with more of an emphasis on melody. The guitarist plays a fast, heavily distorted solo, which suited me just fine, and the song continues in it's slower state for a short time longer.

All of the sudden, it's a quick progression, and then it goes back to the faster rhthym we heard at the beginning. Near the end, it slows down quite a bit, and consists of powerchords and cymbal crashing. The singer growls another line, and the song soon draws to a close.

My thoughts on this song are varied. I liked the singer's voice, the distortion and the fast drum work, but I felt there wasn't enough melody there to keep me interested in what was coming up. The changes in tempo kept me listening, sure, but it was like I was waiting for the rhthym to change back again, instead of enjoying the music being played. Another thing that bugged me was the singer's habit of being slightly off-time, at least to my ear. I liked his screams, but he held on to them for too long.

However, the song wasn't really that bad. It was quite good from a plain aggresive heavy metal point of view, and that's the most important thing. I'm giving it 7/10. And given the oppurtunity, I would like to listen to some other songs by them, just to see what they do in other songs.

My picks: Haven't changed... I'm too lazy to write a new list. If you can't find them, I'll put some more in.

Australian Crawl - Beautiful People

Being Australian, I've probably heard this somewhere down the line, but I can't really remember it. I don't know it by name, anyway. A familiar sounding riff, which has 70's written all over it comes in. It's pretty good. The vocals come in, they are a bit cheesy. Oh well. He has a pretty bad voice, a pre-requisite if you wish to be a successful rock band in Australia (come on, Bon Scott, this guy, the guy from Jet, Brian Johnson). The pop/rock bridge comes in at about 1:40, I'm waiting for a solo, but instead I get a higher up riff than before. Then it goes all quiet, so you can hear his terrible voice all so clearer. There's not much more I can write, it's difficult to review. So I'll end it here.

6/10. Typical Aussie feel good song. I wouldn't buy the album though.

Overkill - Blood and Iron (Thrash metal)
Darkthrone - Kathaarian Life Code (Black metal - 10 mins long)
Spiral Architect - Insect (VERY overly technical metal)
Woods of Ypres - Shredding the Deadwood (Prog rock, similar to Opeth's Damnation) Download available at woodsofypres.ca

Have fun.

Woods Of Ypres - Shedding The Deadwood

Woods Of Ypres - Shedding The Deadwood

Well, can I say from the beginning... that this review will have me speaking glowingly of this song. So those who have distate for flowery prose can skip to my recommendations down the bottom.

The song starts with a strummed intro, very reminiscent of '70s hippy rock, with copius pick squeaking, but has a slightly harder edge. The singer then comes in, a monotonous voice, yet full of inflection. It suits the song very well. A heavily distorted chorus links the verses, with the singer soaring above the guitar. The drummer is there, but isn't stealing the show. However, I don't care, as this isn't the sort of song that needs speeding drum rolls.

A second vocalist speaks some lines that I can't decipher, and the second verse comes to an end. The distortion begins again... and stays for a while. The song doesn't bring up anything too new... but as before, I'm enjoying the singer and melody too much to be bothered. The "talker" says a few more lines, and the original strumming forms a pleasant bridge, before the chorus starts again. The singer really shines in this half of the song, drawing you in, and really letting you feel the emotion of the song. The song slows down and fades away suddenly, but not so fast as too ruin it.

In conclusion... I really enjoyed that song... from beginning to end. I must check out the band, if they can produce other songs as good as this one.
I give it 9.5/10.

My Picks:
Australian Crawl - The Boys Light Up (New Wave Rock)
Skyhooks - Smut ('70s Rock)
Alex Lloyd - Black The Sun (Popular Rock)

this song starts off with a cool guitar riff with a weird efect.good drumming. vocals remind me of atreyu, but heaver.guitar is like a very heavy nu-metal band.riff during verse is catchy.

Rammstein - Engel

Ok, so we all know Rammstein is German... so of course the song I downloaded was in german (I didn't want no crappy English dub version).

But, my next door neighbour, from Austria, was visiting my mother when I was playing it. So I asked her to give me the gist of what they were saying.
Engel is German for Angel, and the chorus for this song is "God knows I don't want to be an angel", and the song revolves around how lonely an angel's life is...

Bearing that in mind, here we go:

Rammstein - Engel

The song starts with a eerie whistle. After the first movement, a heavy bass line begins. The third movement signals the start of the guitars, all playing variations on the original song. The distortion is not too heavy, not too light. The singer begins, in a clear voice, singing about being good on Earth. Then a female vocalist sings about the plight of angels. The verse ends with the male vocalist singing the chorus I mentioned above, which is actually very catchy, and fits into the song really well.

In the background you can hear all the techno elements that make up a good Rammstein song, as well as a pounding bass line. The guitar has a nice heavy riff they play though. The song starts into the second verse, then launches into another chorus. All is going well, and then they have an interlude. The interlude fits in, but they seem to be focusing more on the techno elements than the metal, and that doesn't sit well with me.

When the interlude ends, we get a repeat of the first chorus, then a few powerchords later the song fades back to the eerie whistle heard at the start.

In the end, I felt there was something lacking in the song. I wanted there to be more Metal, and maybe a solo, but instead got a crappy sample by the turntablist. Ahh well, the rest of the song was cool, and I really liked how the lyrics sounded in German. So I'm giving it 7.5/10.

There ya go:

Australian Crawl - The Boys Light Up (New Wave Rock)
Skyhooks - Smut ('70s Rock)
Alex Lloyd - Black The Sun (Popular Rock)

Okay, the only song I ever heard from these guys was TNT (from my THPS addicted times)

AC/DC - Big Balls

This is good song, especially if you want to laugh a bit.

It starts with a riff ascending and descending, and at the same time, one very simple lick to link the chords by one of the Youngs.
And the voice enters, it's pretty amusing, (here starts the laughing part) he plays with that riff a bit, while singing.
And it starts (the "chorus" if you can call that) and i got one thing to say: "I've got big balls!"

That's pretty much what he says in the whole music... The lyrics go all around his big balls, and after this short chorus, the music just repeats itself with no interest at all.....

And here was i, thinking i would hear some old-hard-rock solo, and....

Poof, disappointed...

But the song has proved it's value in the issue of amusement.

What did I think? Well, it's not a song/music that you can be addicted the whole day through, but I heard it a couple of times and although it's not very musically compelling, it has it's fun!

Would I listen more? Well, AC/DC are not one of my favourite bands, but, even still i'd hear some... but just because I was impressed with TNT, not with this song, this is sooo.... different, i think. But I would hear... sometime, with more patience.

Rating: It is not bad at all, even if repetitive... T_T so, here it goes: 6,5/10

AC/DC fans... you can flame me.

Guess that's good... those are the musics I'm the most curious to hear a review about.
