Spaceman Spiff 02-26-2010 01:14 PM

Yes, I completely understand the practice it would take to use in a live setting, but it would be so worth it once I got my skills up to that level.

FunkMetalBass 02-26-2010 02:18 PM
I just use the looper on my M9 for recording noise and looping it.

No, I tell a lie, I use it for a little bit of simple looping to layer up synth sounds too. It's quite neat, but I'd recommend a bunch of practice before trying to use it live, just getting your timing right. Our guitarist loops stuff sometimes too, it's quite cool. We tried simultaneous looping before but that ended disastrously. If you're even the tiniest bit out with each other, it's really obvious by the 4th/5th repeat :(

Regardless, they're great fun. I'd probably recommend an Akai Headrush.
Yes. The headrush seems wicked cool.

For the price, though, I'm sure an RC-2 would suit me just fine for basic looping needs.

fatbandit 02-26-2010 06:08 PM

No, the RC-2 looks horrible. One footswitch for multiple functions isn't it? Headrush will do it. EHX Stereo Memory Man w/Hazarai will do it, Line DL4 will do it, Boss RC-20 will do it. Loads of things, essentially. I can't see why any of them would be beaten out by an RC-2 except for space. and maybe price. But you get what you pay for.

gaslight 02-26-2010 06:24 PM

Headrush is a cool pedal, nice echo/delay with a looping feature, but isn't really a dedicated looper.

Depending on how much looping you want to do, you should look at a Boss RC50. I'm not aware of anything that stands above that one in terms of being a big bastard looper.

fatbandit 02-26-2010 06:26 PM

Meh, the DL4 isn't a dedicated looper, but so many people use it as one. Same with the Headrush. It's what Russian Circles use, and they're pretty much loop kings. I don't know why I advocate the Headrush so much. I don't even use one.

gaslight 02-26-2010 06:32 PM

The Headrush is cool but it doesn't actually have very much loop capacity if you want to do long loops of things, it's maximum available looping time is like 23 seconds, maybe 30 seconds in extended mode.

That's cool if you're just throwing in some quick loops in a band setting or whatever but if you're trying to build a solo performance with full on chord changes and different sections, it doesn't have that functionality. It's not so much a fault of it though, it just isn't designed to do that. I had my heart set on one for years until I opted to go for the RC50 for access to all of that extra time, sampling and layering.

Sick as pedal though, I'm definitely going to add one to my collection at some stage. They're just so damn cool.

damn man

welfare case or what

fatbandit 02-27-2010 09:16 AM

I have never needed more than the 28 seconds the DL4 can do. And now I have an M9 which does 56. So... yeah.

I didn't get the impression Spiff was going to need it for long passages either.

gaslight 02-27-2010 09:54 AM

Well if you just want it for quick loops of a few seconds yeah, don't bother getting a massive one.

When I was reading up on the M9 and M13, Line 6 only advertised it as being a 28 second looper, is that 28 stereo and 56 mono?

fatbandit 02-27-2010 10:56 AM

There's a half speed switch on the DL4 and the M9/13.

It's for recording a loop, and then slowing it down so it's slower. But you can also engage it before pressing record, and then when disengaged again it plays your loop back at double speed.

But yeah, basically if you engage it before you record, it doubles your recording time to 56 seconds.

Spaceman Spiff 02-27-2010 11:13 AM

I don't know exactly how much looping time I'd need, but probably not more than 28 seconds at a time.

fatbandit 02-27-2010 11:34 AM

28 seconds is a lot longer than you think as well. A whole section of a song might only be that long. But to take advantage of the looper, you'd want to record maybe a quarter of that and then have that loop 4 times, so you'd need only like 8 seconds at once. Don't worry about needing more time :)

Spaceman Spiff 02-27-2010 11:54 AM

Exactly. Like if I recorded one repetition of some rhythm guitar to loop then played lead on the following repetitions.

gaslight 02-27-2010 05:38 PM

Yeah, you can fit a lot of short loops into a small amount of seconds. I'm not trying to sell everyone a giant looper but gosh you can do some fun things with them.
What's wrong with it?
I'll buy it off you.

I've got an unopened bottle of that in my freezer right now next to and unopened bottle of Bailey's. I've got some Irish stout that I brewed up a couple weeks back in my fridge. Irish Car Bombs this weekend? I think so.
I'm not entirely sure, I took it to a shop and they told me the problem was the preamp and i needed 60$ to get it fixed : /

What you do is:
-you take the awesome stuff,
-make awesome music,
-people give you money for the awesome music,
-you take that money and buy drugs with it,
-take the drugs,
-music becomes even better because of the drugs
-people give you more money for the better music
-buy more drugs

Hey I'm this guy, and like to come over to neighbours houses and make bizarre enquiries about everyday phenomena.

gaslight 02-28-2010 01:46 AM

I dunno man I wouldn't call Raayl's vocal tracking an everyday phenomena.

Maybe your neighbours are different to mine though.

Did he borrow a saucepan?

Epidemechanical 02-28-2010 03:05 AM

the song im doing actually has a lot of melodic singing in it so it probably sounded like an american idol audition

although he came up during the screaming bit (as anybody who complains does)

silly humans

Epidemechanical 02-28-2010 03:06 AM

there was a certain hostility in his voice though, like he wanted to say 'stfu youre annoying' but my charm and charisma and the fact i was holding an adorable kitten in my arms made him reconsider

and yes, i purposefully grabbed the cat before i answered the door in attempt to subtle manipulate his mood

gaslight 02-28-2010 03:15 AM

I wish I had an adorable kitten around. Well, apart from you that is :).

fatbandit 02-28-2010 02:38 PM

So... I'm afk for 3 weeks while we go record in this converted farmhouse in the countryside. Gonna be awesome ^_^ Don't think I'll have net access up there, so just thought I'd say bye ;p

:amaze: 02-28-2010 06:24 PM

have fun with that.

how much are you recording that you are taking 3 weeks? Or is that including production and whatnot?

Spaceman Spiff 02-28-2010 11:51 PM

My band is covering Hush by Tool for our next show. It's such an awesome song.

It's an album. Three weeks for recording and mixing. Mastering's being done after that time. That's not a long time for an album though really. Want it to be spot on, cuz it'll be in shops like all over the world D:

Spaceman Spiff 03-01-2010 12:43 AM

My friends and I made a snow sculpture last night. It's a giant snake eating a snowman. It came out pretty awesome.

How very, Calvin and Hobbes.

gaslight 03-01-2010 01:02 AM

Three weeks is a nice amount of time to not be rushed in.

Guitars and vocals always take forever compared to drums and bass. Drums for an album can be done comfortably inside of 2 days, bass in 1 day, then guitar always has so many sounds to go through, especially if lots of effects get used, overdubs on top of all that. Vocals are time consuming also. Even bass can take ages you depending on how much you look to change your EQ and set-up between songs.

It's good to be really picky when you're doing a serious effort though, there's no use in being able to tell everyone how quickly something got done if it isn't a good product.

Spaceman Spiff 03-01-2010 01:09 AM
How very, Calvin and Hobbes.
Exactly. He pretended he was being eaten by the snake, though. We actually built a snowman inside the snake's mouth.
