You guys need to relax. Mama Said is an awesome song. It's not just a simple kill/fvck/smash everyone song. It is deeper. Maybe that's the reason most of you don't understand that song.

Some people here need to grow up :upset:

Thrash_The_Sabbath 01-10-2005 12:29 PM

I liked Mama Said, the fact of the matter is that Metallica is no longer a thrash band, even though everyone wants them to be. Finally, they are one of the best metal bands out there, will continue to change, and this is a perfect example

I couldn't agree more.

I don't really mind what kind of thing their new stuff's is as long as:
Its well produced

There are guitar solos

It sounds awesome live.
munky_magik 01-10-2005 12:44 PM

my word, all you people are rather obsessed by these solo thingies aren't you?

Burdcheese 01-10-2005 12:45 PM

Well... yes

munky_magik 01-10-2005 12:49 PM

There's no need to make it sound so obvious

jolle 01-10-2005 12:49 PM

As long as metallica is an awsome live band I don´t really care if their newer albums suck. Unless the stops to play the old goodies!!
Where´s the guitar solos on St Anger??
WE WANT HAMMET!!

it's just your last post made it sound as though it was obvious that you all like solos.

Thank u guys sooo much for bringing up the lack of solos on St. Anger! It was so empty without Kirk's guitar solos--sounded more like Korn or some crap like that.

Access Excess 01-10-2005 02:13 PM

First of all, solos on some of the tracks off St. Anger wouldn't really fit IMHO. I don't mind the lack of solos so much but I hope that on the next record we'll have a ballad and/or an instrumental. The thing is all previous instrumentals had something to do with Cliff, they were either (co-)written by him or in his memory so I think asking for an instrumental is far-fetched (let's not forget their refusal to make My Friend Of Misery one), but at least a ballad to see if they still got it.

Rasta Rocker 01-10-2005 02:19 PM

i think a return to the thrash metal that they helped create would be a huge come back, it would definately make up for st anger.

Leper 01-10-2005 02:22 PM

I kinda wish they'd release the "Elevator version" of NEM on an album. Some may think it's corny to kind of re-release a song, but i'd really like to have that version on an album.

Leper 01-10-2005 02:26 PM
i think a return to the thrash metal that they helped create would be a huge come back, it would definately make up for st anger.
I think St. Anger WAS an attempted return to thrash metal that failed miserably.

munky_magik 01-10-2005 02:28 PM

Interesting thought...If Metallica go back to Thrash people will probaly say they sold out. If they continue along their present course people will still say they sold out

Mister_Che 01-10-2005 03:05 PM

Actually, only the posers would say they've sold out if they return to thrash.

Kardi The Lobet 01-10-2005 03:09 PM

Just saw this thread...Today in Liverpool, I bought a sweet shirt With Metallica on it...They were in Cartoon Form...Rocking out with the ONE AND ONLY SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS AND PATRICK THE STARFISH...thought id tell you...

jaymz_is_god 01-10-2005 03:11 PM

How can they sell out if they return to thrash? It makes no sense  I can't see them returning to thrash with their new album. I think they'll have the same kinda sound as they had in the late 90's (ie. No Leaf Clover, Minus Human, I Disappear).

munky_magik 01-10-2005 03:14 PM

well the majority of their fans wish they would return to thrash, so if they do it to please their fans it would constitute a definition of selling out.

Mister_Che 01-10-2005 03:17 PM

Thus, I am owned....

Unless THEY want to return to thrash. :)

that is of course one of the problems with declaring a band sold out. No one actualy know their personal reasons for doing so, thus they can't really say shit about it.

Mister_Che 01-10-2005 04:00 PM

Umm, next topic, Hmm....

Who has better guitars (aestheticaly), James or Kirk?

Sorry, just bored...

guitarded_chuck 01-10-2005 04:07 PM

Just to clear up on thing for all/most Metallica fans, a good song does *NOT* need a guitar solo. I have always found that Metallica fans worship their solo, and think any song without one is crap.

Not that I don't like Metallica. Master of Puppets is an amazing album. The Four Horseman, Leper Messiah, Orion and ...And Justice For All are my fav songs.

There's barely any metallica songs without solo's.

guitarded_chuck 01-10-2005 04:17 PM

My point being.

Sandtrap 01-10-2005 06:05 PM

what are some easy song to play that sound really kick-***

I love 80s metallica and have the tab book form Rid the Lightning and was just wondering what other songs I could pick up quickly and learn. I really like getting into the songs when I play them!

Mister_Che 01-10-2005 06:26 PM

Master of Puppets

Have fun!

Kill 'em All
- Seek and Destroy
- Four Horsemen
- Whiplash

Ride the Lightning (If you have the book, learn them all)
- Call of Ktulu
- Creeping Death
- For Whom the Bell Tolls or Ride the Lightning
- Fade to Black

Master of Puppets
- Master of Puppets
- Battery
- Damage Inc.

...And Justice for All
- Blackened
- Eye of the Beholder
- One

Those are just my suggestions, take them for what they're worth. Those are my favorite songs to play off of each cd up to the Black Album (which I do not like very much).

He said some of the easier songs to play, and you name 1/2 the hard ones.
Blackened, Damage.Inc, Four Horsemen, Master Of Puppets, Battery...

Doesn't St Anger have no solo's on it. Not sure that's what my guitarist said. He's a mettallica freak. We play Sad but true in our band, but i wanna play more now that i've seen their "cunning Stunts" dvd, especially "for whom the bell tolls".

There are NO solos on ST.Anger, your guitarist is correct. Some more easier and fun songs to play would be: Enter Sandman, For Whom The Bell Tolls, The Thing That Should Not Be, Eye Of The Beholder, Fuel, Of Wolf And Man, Nothing Else Matters.

I guess. I don't really consider them all that hard though with the exception of a few parts. Although, I didn't really take the easy part into consideration as much as the sounding "kick-***" part. Sorry.

Ibanex0110 01-10-2005 08:19 PM

I think it's funny when people dislike st. anger for having no solos on it. granted, most of the songs on there are below par, and just plain boring (title track). but there are some songs that I think are pretty catchy, even if it is simple songwriting

metal_milita 01-10-2005 08:29 PM

A lot of people count on solo's too much these days, as do the bands. IMO they're over-rated. I don't see skill of a guitarists through how fast they can shred up and down a fretboard (although I am always hopeful to see Hammett light his guitar on fire and play with his teeth :D ), but I always listen for the main riff's and chorus. Without a good riff, Hammet can do any solo and I still won't get into the song as much as I would if it had a killer MOP style riff. Even if Kirk layed down a "Dyers Eve" style solo in St.Anger, how many of you can say they would like that song any better??

Freezing Moon 01-10-2005 08:33 PM
Even if Kirk layed down a "Dyers Eve" style solo in St.Anger, how many of you can say they would like that song any better??
123 to everything but that. I'd like it better, but in my opinion it would still suck, badly I might add.

Mainly because of the main riffs, and everything else about the song, but also because the solo wouldn't fit at all. I'd only like it better because he at least put the effort in to have a good fast solo.

JACKROXYOU 01-10-2005 08:40 PM

i was reminded why i like i disappear today

that song rocks

Cheers mate!! I'll suggest some of those songs. Although i'm not really into the re-load album but fuel is an exception :thumb:

Leper 01-10-2005 10:19 PM

It's so true! St. Anger was so bad not even Kirk Hammett could save it. However at least a couple of attempted solos might've diverted our attention from the crappy songwriting. It just seems as tho Kirk wasn't even a part of the band during the recording. I mean, what the hell is the point in 2 rythm guitars??
