My aunt's wedding later this afternoon. Mmm, buffet dinner. I just hope it's Chinese..

Zappa 04-23-2005 09:14 AM

Saw a fantastic trombonist/seashellist last night by the name of Steve Turre. He performed with the NMU Jazz band, and it was a really awesome night. He's played with Roland Kirk, Ray Charles, Art Blakey, and has been with the Saturday Night Live band for 20 years. He's the coolest.

My roommate just left to go to a wedding this afternoon... Strange "coincedence", don't you think?

Yeah it was okay. I didn't really have any strong feelings about the album, so it will probably grow on me.

Stupid yousendit... It won't let me upload a single file. I tried 5 times in 2 days, and still did not succeed.

pinkyeti 04-23-2005 02:50 PM

Lately, I've finally been getting more and more into dance music. And I'm missing a Kills concert tonight.
*grunt*

Which one have you got?

Zappa 04-23-2005 05:12 PM
Seashellist?

Interesting......
Indeed. I think he generally played 4 of different sizes, and then he had one huge one for the last song. He cuts them so that on the end is basically a trombone mouthpiece, and he uses lip tension, air column speed, as well as shoving his hand into the shell to get 3 or 4 pitches out of each. He's got this really mellow, expressive sound to it.

He played the first bunch of songs on trombone, and then made like the concert was over. Then he did his silly little planned thing where her turned to the NMU jazz band director and said "Hey Mark, I forgot to play the shells!" And then he whipped the little cloth sheet that was covering them on the music stand next to him, and the band did a latin tune with him on the shells.

After that, the concert really was over, but the response was huge. He came back out, and said that even though he hadn't planned it, he'd play an encore solo on the shells, since the band didn't know any more songs. It was unbelievable.

http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=622760 <-- that one

Bartender 04-23-2005 05:40 PM

I don't have that one :(

Zappa - he sounds interesting. Do you have any recordings of him?

Zappa 04-23-2005 05:51 PM

Not yet I don't.

el doctor 04-23-2005 07:04 PM

And to think I was going to come in here and say that Carl Fischer (a trumpet player who toured for 10 years with Wynton Marsalis and Maynard Ferguson) conducted my jazz band rehearsal the other day... but that doesn't hold a candle to the seashellist.

Iai 04-23-2005 07:09 PM

And I was going to come in here and say that Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds were just on C4 music, with a live performance from the Abbatoir Blues tour. Awesome stuff.

Am I ever going to be able to post in this thread without you jumping all over everything I say?

Logical explanation: Females can't leave you alone?

asymm 04-24-2005 10:23 AM

I'm listening to the "Make Believe" leak... Even though I'm not a huge Weezer fan, I'll post my impressions later.

Actually, if you guys want, I'll YouSendIt? Takers?

Luxor 04-24-2005 10:24 AM

I'll give it a try.

Yes please, that'd be great. I definitely wanna preview this album before buying.

biografiend 04-24-2005 10:32 AM

The single of Weezers new album blows. My friend said it was Blue Album amazing though.

Luxor 04-24-2005 10:33 AM

Well, I'm definitely hoping that the rest of the album is better than "Beverly Hills". I'm pretty sure most of us are.

Electrocution 04-24-2005 10:35 AM

Me and pixies saw Head Automatica yesterday. There was also this psychedelic metal band that was so awesome someone had to go to the hospital.

Iai 04-24-2005 10:37 AM

I actually don't think I'm going to bother previewing the album at all. I have literally no hope that it will be anything other than suck.

The review of Beverley Hills I put on RYM -
Come on, Rivers. The 'endearing nerd' gimmick doesn't work when you force it so blatantly. The spoken word break in this song makes a mockery of your entire career.

Their decision to get back together for The Green Album is looking dumber and dumber every day.
It says something that the talking guitar effect is the best part of the song.
There was also this psychedelic metal band that was so awesome someone had to go to the hospital.
hah!

asymm 04-24-2005 10:57 AM

Yeah, "Make Believe" is definitely better than the horrific "Beverly Hills" single. But... it's definitely no Blue Album. It's simply okay. Not a travesty like the single made it out to be, but not a return to form either. A very balanced 'decent' album, some great tracks balanced out by some very 'blah' tracks.

biografiend 04-24-2005 10:57 AM

Is slsk still down?
